I think they should have opened the album with Lies and Eyes rather than Steel and Blood though, that's just me though.

Now that I've heard the album a good 10 or 20 times now, I can definitively say this is better than Omni. The only clunker, really, is Heaven is a ghost town which I initially liked. Not to say it's a bad song even, just kinda slow and repetitive. Cold Company is absolutely loving amazing and by far the best song on the album with diamond lightning a close second. Whoever said earlier that it sounded like something off Planet of Ice is spot-on. There's super-impressive guitar work all over this album. Now I'm totally pumped to see which songs they play off the new album when I see them next month. Any goons going to the Boston show?

I listened to it once yesterday, have listened to it multiple times today. I was originally really disappointed, but I relistened and am really impressed by the amount of nuance all over the place. Lies and Eyes is a fantastic song. First four songs are wonderful in a row. Its just great work. And after having seen them a couple of times now, there are a ton of songs on this album that are going to sound great live (see earlier post). e: Won't be in Boston, but I'm anglin' at heading to Hartford since its not a ridiculous drive and its on a Saturday rather than trying to haul rear end to Pittsburgh after class on a Friday. Tubelord have announced they're breaking up, after one last show. Almost everyone hated their 2nd album but their first and the EPs are some of the best math-rock albums ever made. I chose to go and see another band instead of them earlier in the year, now they're another of my favourite bands I'll never get to see live

As a second album Romance really grew on me the more I listened to it, now I actually like it almost as much as their first, albeit in a completely different way. In good news though This Town Needs Guns new album is out so soon, I'm not sold on their new singer yet but I'm still massively looking forwards to it. The bits they've played at their shows have been pretty drat good.

Oh man, this thread is still a thing. Back when I posted on page two I had only the vaguest idea what math-rock was and the only band I knew fitting the style was MTB. Now it's my favorite genre ever and I have delved deep enough to have new things to bring in to this thread. Some stuff I have especially been digging lately: I was listening to some LITE, an excellent recommendation I presume I got from this thread, and found a related band called Mouse On The Keys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFoetd0sD6Y These guys aren't actually all that similar to LITE, aside from having an insane drummer. They are another Japanese band that reminds me a lot of Té and Toe and other bands which kind of straddle the border between post-rock and math-rock, if their style was combined with fusion. The band consists of an insane drummer and two keyboardists who play fast, arpeggiated piano lines to create a very math-rock like style with guest musicians improvising trumpet or sax parts over. Very cool stuff. Between these guys and Lye By Mistake, a band posted in this thread who combine mathcore and fusion, I was eager to find more music that fit this general style. Jizue are another similar Japanese band who achieve a very similar style to Mouse On The Keys and even a bit more like LITE at times: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tfwr94u8RQk There is a solid western band that fits the bill as well in Father Figure. I have never heard anything like it. This is really cool, if a little disorienting. Definitely feels a bit off kilter and out of synch, even compared to other math rock. Kind of reminds me of Ahleuchatistas or Upsilon Acrux in that the parts carried by different instruments seem pretty incongruous at times, not really coming together to form an obvious or coherent melody.

That youtube song is actually way more coherent than I remember their previous stuff which basically just sounded like free improv (but was actually tightly composed etc.). I just downloaded their album and read that the drummer died kinda recently and then read a news story about his life while I was listening to it and learned a lot of interesting stuff that I didn't really need to know. I guess that's what the internet is for. Gateway to Dignity is a really good listen so far.

A very cool band from my native Santiago de Chile is Ronaldo, a mellow math rocky thing with trumpets. Their album is up for free on their bandcamp. And since someone mentioned Jizue and Toe I figured I should also mention Sgt., a Japanese band that blends mathrock/postrock/jazz/whatever + a violin and occasional hip-hop. Here's a good song to start on. Also Fridge, Four Tet's old band, might belong here, bit more on the post-rock side but with the occasional forays into odd time signatures and chromatic guitar lines. Same thing with El Ten Eleven, a two piece that works around looping riffs and layering, like this. Oh, and Dysrhythmia is also amazing, featuring a guitar hero of mine, Keith Hufnagel, who's currently playing with Gorguts. This is a great song of theirs, unfortunately I couldn't find a better, non-live version of it. Don't know if anyone's interested in the more screamy stuff but since someone mentioned Rolo Tomassi I'll at least recommend Down I Go, a British band that combined the guitar groove of Coalesce with the Pattonesque-ish vocals and fantastic hooks. Apologies if any of these have been posted already.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Spy versus Spy yet. They wouldn't have been called "math rock" when they were around, but I think some of you might like them, as they share some of the characteristics of some of the bands already mentioned in this thread. If you want an easy reference point I suppose calling them 'Braid UK' would be a good start, so expect late 90s emo (when that was still an actual thing). They released a single self titled ep in 1998, and an album "Little Lights" in 2000. Both were re-released in 2007 as a self titled two disc collection with a couple of demos and songs that had been on compilations. You can find their music on myspace here.

You could check out Big Scary Monsters, loads of British math bands including Colour, Tangled Hair, Adebisi Shank and Tubelord are/were signed with them. I think Colour were the best band in the entire genre, but a couple of other good bands from that label are Tall Ships, Calories, Rosa Valle, Mimas and Blakfish (more mathcore but still fairly poppy).

Oh, that song's from Infinity Overhead? I got an e-mail about the video earlier and I thought it was a new song. Shows how much I listen to that album  I almost always have my iPod on shuffle in my car, and anytime Diamond Lightning or Cold Company come on, I'll crank the volume all the way up and get really into them. But if any of the other songs from that album come up, I tend to skip them. Listening to Listing now and this is exactly why. It's not a bad song I guess, it's just really loving boring.

About MtB: I don't know if anyone heard about this (but it got announced all over twitter and what not a couple of weeks ago), but they are doing 20ish shows with Circa Survive in March in the Midwest/Northeast/Southeast. Also seconding a recommendation for Look Mexico from earlier in the thread. I have The Crucial Collection and I like it a lot.

I've been listening to quite a bit of Yowie lately and I noticed a sort of reoccurring theme in Yowie discussions: It seems like people who aren't intense Yowie or mathrock fans lump them in with the noise rock scene and think that most of their music is improvised live noise. Naturally Yowie fans don't fancy this idea much since Yowie puts a ton of effort into writing each moment of each song, as most mathrockers do. Its just a pet peeve of mine when people listen to intricate or complex music but hear noise and chaos instead. Granted Yowie is fairly chaotic, but in a very mathematical way.

I think even when you know what the songs are, and you know how they are crafted, it's still played in a way that feels improvised. I agree that it's just annoying when for example the friend I took to the show was just like "that's just post-modern noise", but it's especially understandable for Yowie.

This problem is a bad problem to have. I was surprised to hear a reviewer who had praised Hella before criticize Zach Hill's most recent solo effort as being "just noise". It's really easy for me to hold those people in contempt, as a lot of the music I love sounds like noise on the first couple of listens, but has a tremendous payoff once I can wrap my head around it. The notions that music which takes time to grow on the listener is pretentious or difficult to listen to is so flawed, but I have no idea how to demonstrate to people that I like the music I do simply because I find it catchy or viscerally satisfying without forcing them to listen to something they've decided they hate over and over again. On another note, This Town Needs Guns just released their new album 13.0.0.0.0. I've only listened to a couple of tracks so far, but it seems that the change of vocalist was a serious downgrade. Still worth listening to for the intricate finger picking and odd rhythmic structure though.
