Dog Jones posted:You absolute piss men allow the math rock thread to wallow on page 3, while the new Yowie album has been frightening and confusing me for hours at this point is this madness? whatever it is I'm into it In other news I was just at Strangeforms which was loving awesome but I'm sad to report that Dan Beesley's (ex Cleft) and Tom Peters' (Alpha Male Tea Party) new band GUG is loving terrible and they wouldn't have been booked if it wasn't for the pedigree. Completely uninspired riff rock and Tom is a mediocre drummer at best. Everyone else was loving ace though, especially Axes who'd not played together since August, were really drunk and yet were tight as a drum. It's PLUG time! Echoesanddust.com are looking for people who are into math rock and wanna review it. It's a super casual gig, no experience necessary, basically we get promos, you claim promos and write reviews. The main perk is you get free albums before their official release date and if you're lucky, press passes! (Guess who's not paying for ArcTanGent this year). There's no quotas for how much you review, the preferred timeframe for reviews is we like to get them up a few days before the release date (that's what PR prefers anyway). The main drawback is that I'm there. If this sounds like something you'd be into, fire off an email to editor@echoesanddust.com.

UncleBlazer posted:You definitely going? I looked at the line up and thought "maaaaaaaaaybe". Also assumed the Echos and Dust guys weren't interested. May go then. Almost certainly, now the lineup has improved.

It will rule, but you might run into Porklift so weigh up that risk.

It's a lot more poppy and less mathy, I was disappointed.

Math is also (generally) way less indulgent than prog. Shorter songs, fewer parts, more punky.

Oh and math solos are vanishingly rare. Math is undoubtedly derivative of prog but I think the influence of punk, reduction of ego and economic factors that meant bands couldn't tour with 30 backup musicians and afford every guitarist a rack of studio grade effects sets it apart.

My mates Chiyoda Ku have just put out their first full length and it's ace. I honestly think they're one of the best bands in Britain right now (RIP Cleft) and you should buy their album. You should give them all your money because they recently had the van they were all living in stolen, with basically all their possessions. It's been a super rough year for them and I'm really hoping this album does well, they need it and they deserve it.
