Heard Minus the Bear before, yeah. Both them and dynamos sound not bad at all but seem lighter on the "math" than what I had in mind. You're right about safe/stable rhythms. Minus the Bear switches time signatures and uses stuff besides 4/4, and that's all well and good, but really I just consider that a basic part of being in a good band almost regardless of genre. Basically what I have in mind is a band with the rhythmic complexity of Dillinger Escape Plan and the melody of, say, Grizzly Bear that embraces both extremes simultaneously without moderating either. It's kind of a ridiculous idea. May attempt to make it happen on my own some day though.

Did you listen to Faraquet? I really think you're basically describing The View From This Tower.

Well, other than the Grizzly Bear thing.

So does anybody like Zu?
Not sure what to call them genre-wise (like it matters), but they play some pretty crazy stuff. Someone originally posted them in the post rock thread a while back, but I think they definitely fit here.

Also, are we posting other bands that aren't really math rock, but appeal to the math rock crowd? I really appreciated that someone posted Dismemberment Plan; I hadn't considered them before now :)

I just stumbled on some new songs from Cinemechanica and now I'm really psyched for their upcoming album.

What do you guys think?

Good poo poo. Their new album will kick rear end for sure.

So I'm going to see Deerhoof on Thursday, and it looks like Nervous Cop is opening for them. From what I've read, that's basically just Zach Hill and Greg Saunier (drummer of Deerhoof, tied with Zach for my favorite drummer) doing some kind of drum noise thing, but I can't find poo poo on them doing live stuff. Anyone have any firsthand knowledge of what they're like live? I listened to a couple tracks off the album but it's pretty much non-music; no beat or melody... I'm pretty interested to see how that translates on the stage :)

e: OH GOD drat IT http://www.facebook.com/sargenthouse/posts/181751151857944
looks like Zach Hill broke his foot so he's not playing at all.

"Math Rock" sounds like the bi-product of the generation of guitarists/musicians that grew up listening to grunge/nirvana in the 90's (when musicianship went down the toilet) and decided that they wanted to do something more "progressive"....but don't have the ability (outside of counting odd time sigs).

So are you really as ignorant as you come across as or did you just post solely to stir up poo poo?

...but you know I'm right

Ugh, you are just insufferable. "Math rock" is a very diverse label given to a bunch of different bands that honestly don't have much in common. I really don't think many people like the label itself - I certainly don't like saying it - but to call every musician who makes music under that banner as "not having the ability" is just a ridiculously close-minded thing to say. Especially when there's quite a few bands who cite 70s prog and classic rock like Yes or King Crimson as a big influence of theirs (think about how ironic that is in the context of your post). Oh, and the early 90s were like the heyday for many bands of this genre, like Slint or Drive Like Jehu, and they had absolutely NOTHING to do with grunge; they were loving contemporaries.

New track is out from Hella's new album. The boy's are back as a duo, which is awesome because I hate lyrics in my Math Rock.

Yeah I'm excited about the new Hella album, but then again I actually liked There's No 666. I kinda got lucky in that respect because it was the first Hella album I listened to and I thought it was awesome. So I didn't have the annoyance/disappointment most people seemed to have had when they heard Hella added new members.

In other good news, Giraffes? Giraffes! are working on a new album. They did the Kickstarter thing and hit their goal in just three days. Really is amazing as I didn't think they were that known at all.

Can't wait.

Well they have like 39,000 listeners on last.fm and they set the goal pretty low. They basically needed 1.4% of those listeners to donate :10bux: which seems very doable.

So I remember hearing about the band Loom somewhere in NMD, I don't think it was in this thread because it was years ago. Anyway, their album Angler was posted and I ended up getting it and basically the album was very straightforward "blah" mathrock, plus they had a violinist, which pretty much took center stage on the whole album (example). I was really not impressed and kinda set it aside/forgot about it. I was just looking for youtubes of Loom to recommend them to someone who was looking for "orchestral" mathrock and noticed they had more music now. It's actually pretty great; they got much heavier and they almost sound like Cinemechanica, which is cool. Have a listen:

So basically if anyone wrote them off like I did give them another shot :)

It's just about what I've been expecting. Minus the Bear has been moving towards that boring homogenized pop style for like three albums. I'm a little disappointed they're not innovating or whatever, but I can't say I'm surprised.
