Not sure if this is the right thread for it, but I was wondering if anyone has experience or seen stuff from HeroForge. The premise is very interesting and the site/interface looks pretty slick, but I am wondering how well it actually comes out. I'm not sure I'm ready to spring $20-$30 on a custom miniature, but that is a really reasonable rate if you want something specific that you're not going to find in a conventional lineup. Certainly better than retaining a custom sculpt, although you would get more latitude with that as well.

I'm actually working on a mini a got from Hero Forge at the moment. Phone-posting at work right now but I can write something up later. Tl;Dr is print quality on the Premium Plastic was pretty good with only some print lines visible if you look closely, nowhere near as detailed as something from GW or Reaper, but having a completely custom mini might be worth it to you?

I'll get some when I get home - I got GW, P3, Reaper (metal and Bones), and some D&D pre-primed ones to compare

Cthulu Carl
Apr 16, 2006

I think they changed their materials at some point - at the very least I had no issue with just using a hit of my usual spray primer - Rustolem 2x coverage.

Anyway, come with me on a magical journey while I do this review-ish thing.

Here's the final render of the mini I ordered:

I ordered it on January 5th and it shipped on the 16th, arriving on the 19th from New York (the original shipping estimate on the site when I placed the order was the 18th). I got the Premium Plastic which is black so here it is after a hit of primer:

There's some faint print lines you can see on his shoulder, and the planks on the base have 'em too. But with primer, paint, and not looking so dang close at it because you're painting the thing makes them less noticeable.

And now for some comparisons, so witness a tiny sample of my backlog!

Partially-painted P3, Partially-painted Heroforge, primed GW:

Reaper Bones, Heroforge, Reaper metal:

Warlord Pike & Shotte, Herofroge, Pre-primed D&D:

That's hopefully a good spread for you to compare the detailing.

My biggest complaints are:

-Some of the gear options are kinda oddly proportioned (compare the HF rapier to the Warlord guy's sword in the last pic), but that's probably a consequence of 3D printing the mini instead of injection-molding.

- Detail is a bit light, but again, probably the consequence of needing to have a customizing interface and then a minimum resolution for the printers.

- The base. I started with it in a Citadel handle, but the base started warping visibly, so I switched to sticky-tac and a plastic cup. One of the base options is a tab that you can use in regular slotted bases so if I get any more, I'll probably go that route.

I actually probably WILL get more, but if I'm looking for a certain character archetype, I'll probably always check Reaper first, then converting a GW, then Hero Forge. The D&D ones... Are at least cheap, I guess?

This dude did a video review too, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOWzYuBLD4k. I somehow doubt I'll ever get a bronze one because LOL.

If you have your own printer (I guess it's probably have to be an SLA? I dunno, I haven't looked too hard at printers for minis lately), you can get the STL file from them for :10bux: so you can always do-it-yourself kinda.

We were trying to get into Star Wars Armada pre-pandemic, but it looks like development on that one has been suspended, and it has often had availability issues. Billion Suns obviously won't have availability issues, and it seems more flexible with an easier learning curve.

A couple people on BoardGameGeek seemed pretty successful using Lego to build their own ships, this seems like it could be a fun route to take. I'm wondering if it's reasonable given the game's prescribed scale, though:

Fighters seem like they might be finicky, since one Lego stud is about 8mm?

That table is just a suggestion: http://abillionsuns.space/what-size-spaceships/

The author says the ship sizes are just an average of what he had on hand and can vary with no issues. I'd say if you go the Lego route, use the suggested base sizes and build whatever fits the base. I bought a couple fleets off My Mini Factory but haven't had a chance to print, paint, and set up a game yet, but IIRC the "ship" is assumed to be the dead center of the base.

If Stargrave minis are anything like Frostgrave minis, that is probably the way to go. I don't have any Stargrave ones, but I bought one box of Fristgrave Knights and Lady Soldiers and I probably have more than enough minis for any warband I try to make.

If you have a 3d printer, consider Anvil Industry's patreon - I've subscribed for four months and gotten sets with enough variety for about 2-3 Stargrave crews and this month they're releasing some alien mercenaries. I haven't bought through the Digital Forge on their website - it's much more expensive than the patreon, but also way cheaper than shipping their resin bits from the UK.

But the scenario says that any of those that make base contact with the ramen truck are removed from the board as they "Scamper off with their ill-gotten noodles."

Unfortunately only one of the modules is good for solo play unlike Five Parsecs.

I thought it was pretty great, especially controlling a gunner but the damage was a bit swingy compared to something like warhammer. You either hit and almost one shot the enemy (or get one shot) or whiff entirely.

I'd like to see something a little bit more in between, cause while it's nice to nuke an enemy AI it's not as nice to get nuked.

I think that swinginess is why he switched from the d20 for Rangers of Shadow Deep, Frostgrave, and Stargrave, to 2d10 with a re-roll pool for Silver Bayonet. I wonder if it's possible to implement Silver Bayonet's dice system for the other games, but it's late and the rule books are across the room.

EDIT: I guess could probably ask here - anyone know good sources for medieval anthropomorphic animal minis in the US? I just picked up Burrows & Badgers on a whim, and while I know Oathsworn does the minis for the game, I'm hoping I can avoid paying for shipping from the UK if possible.

It's reality-based in that it's set in the Napoleonic wars, but instead of vast armies marching in lock step, it's small expert bands of skirmishers taking potshots at one another while also trying to not get shredded by werewolves, stabbed by goblins, or drained by vampires. I think living scarecrows are also a possible enemy.

Yeah, Reaper and Dark Sword are kind of my fallbacks if I don't find anything else. I might just suck up the shipping costs because the warbands are so small, and yeah, Oathswron does very good adorable woodland creatures about to viscously murder one another.

3d printing and easy access to games publishing has really blown things wide open. Dnd becoming really huge lately is really helping too because people want to play wargames with whatever fairly generic stuff they already have from that. The value proposition of a new army for $30 of resin and $15 of files is insane if you know someone with a printer.

I run a print business (as do like 6 other goons on here, it's crazy), and have been seeing more and more people over the last couple of years buying for purposes other than proxying some big 40k army. there's a ton of sculptors doing crazy stuff who otherwise would just be sculpting boring goblins 10 years ago because of patreon

Good news for the STLs: They look way more detailed than the MDF version. They have holes so you can magnetize them. The floor is on 3"x3" file, so you can print it even on smaller SLA printers.

Bad news for the STLs: Looks like they didn't include a way to connect the floor panels so keeping them aligned and together will take some care.

The rules also have a "LAN mode" (where several people play their own setups of the game that impact the other games) and a "Savior mode" that adds in NPC crew the player has to save.
