It's got candy in it, I'll take it! :neckbeard:

You should go ride a busa though. You'll understand then. It'd be badass, but at the same time, given how squirrely normal choppers are, I can't imagine how that thing's gonna handle with no rear suspension.

It's got a shock on the seat! That's just as good if not better than rear suspension.

Hey everybody. I'm scheduled to take my MSF test in less than a month, and currently I have zero riding experience. I've been wanting to get a motorcycle for a good year or two now, but only recently have I had the money to afford one. I've done a lot of research about good starter bikes, and most people seem to agree that the Ninja 250 is great, especially since I'll be using it just for commuting and non-freeway riding. That being said, I found this ad on Craigslist:

http://skagit.craigslist.org/mcy/1732095718.html

It's a '99 Ninja 250 with 13.5k miles on it for $1000. That seems to be quite a good deal. My question is: what important things should I try to find out about this bike before I decide to purchase it? There isn't a whole lot of information in the post, and considering that $1k is much lower than most of the Ninjas I've seen on craigslist, I have a feeling that it's probably got something wrong with it.

I'm not great with mechanics, but I'm open to learning, and I have a friend who works on cars, so together we can probably handle some minor problems, and I'm not opposed to putting work into the bike as it needs it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm tempted to buy this bike now even before I take my MSF, which might be a bad idea on the offchance that I dislike riding (which I seriously doubt would happen), but I don't want to pass up on an amazing deal, especially because my budget is about $2k at most.

That looks like a good deal, I'd jump on it, sometimes they just come up and you get lucky. I'd move though, deals like that usually don't last.

I'd check the usual stuff, tires for wear and age, the sprockets for hooking, the chain should have even tension when you check it's slack in different points, check the brake pads, ask when the valves were adjusted last and when the oil was changed last. Check that the brake fluid in the reservoir is light and clear, if it's not, it needs to be replaced.

That should cover most of the basics. :)

Thanks a ton, Z3n. It's always a little unnerving buying your first _____. But seeing how this is about half the price as my maximum, even if there are a few minor problems, it might still be a better deal. I'm pretty excited, hopefully the bike is still for sale. :)

I'd pass on the gear unless it fits you perfectly, but the bike on it's own for 1150$ isn't a bad deal if the bike is in good shape.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn. That's probably pretty cheap, since SPSs would go for more, being a limited run and all. But 3800 miles in 10 years? Poor thing, all neglected in the shed. Buy it, give it a proper caning.

EDIT: Also, loving US bike prices. Sub-$10k SPS-spec? :argh:

Ok... dude obviously knows nothing about his bike. Is it a DRZ? KLR? Seems very cheap... any reason I should not jump all over this?

http://reading.craigslist.org/mcy/1759151528.html

I purchased this bike in September, 2009 from a Vietnam vet (the original owner) for $1,300. It is in good condition and ran great for me.
I put the bike in storage for the winter according to the manual since I wouldn't be riding.
Now I'm moving and unfortunately need to sell the bike.

Though it ran and started well for me last fall, when I reinstalled the battery this May it wouldn't turn over. All the lights work, so the battery is good and the bike is getting power. It may simply be the ignition switch, but I don't have time to work on it and need to sell ASAP.

The bike has been garage kept it's whole life and I have the title in my name.

Again I'm looking to sell ASAP, so no reasonable offer will be refused. If interested call Isaac at -, thanks.

I remember an ad that was posted about 3-4 weeks after they came out on ebay...a desmo with 14.5 miles on it. Probably had 6.75 very sedate miles on it, one mile of abject terror, and then 6.75 more sedate miles home. :v:
