If anyone wants to peek at Southern California, in particular San Diego (although LA and Orange County's OK too), that'd be great. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know what's a good deal.

http://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/mcy/1562958231.html Is this a good deal on a 2005 V-Strom 650 with 24k miles? It's a bit beat up but the price seems OK, maybe..? It's $2995 but the front fairings are missing due to a low speed drop.

http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/mcy/1592944058.html Wrecked '02 V-Strom DL1000 for $1000 OBO. Apparently the engine fires up and is theoretically ridable, but what a great parts bike. The big-rear end $300 Happy Trails top box is included along with newer Metzeler tires (Tourance, probably?) and a clutch I could swap out when mine needs work. I'm so tempted to talk him down to $700 or so.

It's obscene how much cheaper bikes are outside of southern California, or California in general. It's rare to see a sub $1,500 bike that's safely ridable around here. edit: http://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/mcy/1962200317.html Hmmm... what exactly is a "blow back" problem anyways? edit2: I take it back, it's really just San Diego. This looks like it could be fun for ~$1,500. I've been looking at something that would be fun to ride down to New Mexico on this fall. And in general: Are old Gold Wings as awesome as they seem for the price? They seem like an awful lot of bike for under $2k.

But this beaut has caught my eye: 1982 Goldwing GL1100 Ready to Ride##### - $2200 (Littleton) Is it just me, or is this thing downright beautiful? Dat luggage. I'm thinking I might go for this one instead if I can get him down to $1,800... there may have to be some tough choices made this weekend when I scope them both out.

Well, I checked out the '84 GL1200 this evening. The 'Wing looked a little rougher than I expected, with lots of buttons missing. That would be no big deal, but the engine was running pretty hot (the gauge was at 3/4 even though it was just 84F out). I'd rather pay a bit more to get a nicer one. I did like the ride - a little like an older rocket propelled couch. It actually felt lighter than my V-Strom DL1000. I'm going to try to check out the '82 this weekend. Thanks for the input, y'all.

There are newer ones out there for a few grand more but apparently they're not considerably more reliable and they definitely don't look as cool. Any thoughts on 82-86 models? I know the later ones are more like modern Wings, but what about reliability and parts availability?

The newer gen you're talking about seem to run about 5 or 6k in my area, mostly early 90s models. Think it's worth paying around double for them? Thanks a lot for your input, by the way.

After the advice I received in this thread, I've changed the scope of my Goldwing search to GL1500s. This is especially because I'm looking for something that will require less work to maintain, at least in the short term. Here are two in my area that I like: 1996 Goldwing Interstate 1500cc Touring bike - $4000 This one looks to be in great condition overall. Seller said tires are in "OK" shape. It's an Interstate, so no reverse gear (not a big deal) among other missing add-ons/farkles. However, $4k seems like an excellent asking price. 1998 Honda Gold Wing GL1500SE - Silver - $5995 This one also looks to be in great condition, although it's hard to tell with the tiny postage stamp photo the seller provided. Having the SE would be nice (so I can talk to truckers on my CB radio, like I've always wanted). But is it worth an extra $2k?

I swear this will be my last post soliciting opinions on Goldwings. I think I hit the old Goldwing jackpot: goldwing gl1100 - $1600 (pueblo) 1980 goldwing gl1100 - $2200 (pueblo) (same bike?) 1978 goldwing gl1000 - $3200 (pueblo) 1976 goldwing gl1000 - $3200 (pueblo) My god, they're all beautiful. And considering they're being sold by as restored by a Goldwing mechanic, they seem fairly priced. I think I like the black and white '80 GL1100 the best. What do ya'll think?

Picked up the '80 GL1100 this last weekend. The '76 was quite pretty in person, but $1,500 was less painful than $3,200. On the ride back to Denver from Pueblo, I rode through the most intense rain I've ever ridden in on I-25. It was pretty drat frightening, actually, but at least the thunder and lightning made me feel like a badass. Thanks for your advice, slidebite, EvilSlug, Abe Froman, and the other folks who helped me make my decision!

Sure, it feels like a brick a low speeds, but it gets drat near scooter-like at 30 and above, center of gravity wise. They're unbelievably cheap to ensure, great in bad weather, and reliable as nearly any bike. They're a spergin' CAers dream.

It sucks that sellers never realize that most serious buyers would prefer an obsessively maintained bike with a fair amount of miles than a bike that has never been maintained with few miles. Absolutely do a VIN check though, as was posted. I like to keep the page pulled up on my phone and do a check right as I arrive.
