Any thoughts on this bike? 86 Transalp, 33k, $2200. It's not that I NEED a Transalp or even a second bike, but boy would I love one.

Edit with some more info from the guy:

future Transalp non-owner posted:

Here is a link to pics on this bike, as far is service, I did a complete service on the bike, bike starts right-up and runs as it should, the clocks don't work at low RPM's but they work fine at 2.5k and up.

And a couple of the pictures he sent.

From the other pictures the bike looks pretty clean, some paint chipping on the forward edge of the starboard fairing vent and maybe some bondo and repainting on the tail. I need to ask him about those two things.

Me too. I'll admit I watched it for a while trying to figure out what Z3n was getting at.

edit to say what it is: 2004 KLR with 20K miles for $1500.

http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/mcy/2610519315.html

Ad's too long to post but here's the summary:

quote:

THE GOOD:
It has a great aftermarket windscreen/fairing
recent aftermarket exhaust with new header
new chain (about 4000 miles)
large 6.6 gallon gas tank
comfortable aftermarket seat
aftermarket bash plate.
aftermarket maer hand guards
completely tuned before translabrador trip ( I spent quite a bit of
money making sure I felt comfortable taking it on such a long trip )
Front forks redone before the trip!
comes with extra clutch cable, throttle cables, clutch lever, brake lever
I also got a few things from the old owner: old gas tank and old
fairing and some extra side panels (I don't think they're in good
shape donno how useful they are to you).
I have an extra set of tires that I took off of it, they are more
street oriented but they are decently worn down.

THE BAD:
wind screen has two "star" cracks from rocks hitting it on a recent
trip (but after 3000 miles they don't seem to be getting bigger, so it
seems the integrity of the windshield is fine, the windshield is
removable so you might be able to buy just that for cheap from the
manufacturer).
busted rear shock (I've been driving it fine but its a very springy
ride the damping's gone as well as the oil that was in it, easy fix
once you score a cheap replacement shock )
speedo cable went bad midway through Labrador trip and so the odometer
is between 1K and 2K less than it should be (easy fix just replace the
cable).

THE UGLY:
the usual little offrading scruffs, only tipped over once on Lab trip,
when it was blown over in the night by the wind.
also its a KLR, clearly not a pretty bike.

Rear shock is a few hundred but it's a pretty good deal otherwise.

That’s been up for at least a month so you should lowball them and see what happens.

Seems like you could buy it now, (freeze to death riding it home,) replace the stator, and sell it in the spring for a decent profit. If I had a garage I’d almost be tempted.

Too many toddlers, too few garages. One bike is all I can manage right now and I’m not ready for a change yet. I have no doubt I’ll have an SV at some point though

That double tail look is so wacky. Like the i8 or some of those other sports cars where it looks like it’s pooping out another small car

I think an E with inverted forks is a better SM anyway-- it'll have the more aggro cams so all it needs is a 3x3 mod and fcr

Plus (at least at one point) insurance was cheaper for an E vin

That guy posted about building a chopper in the "what bike should I buy" thread, and someone reflexively replied "dr650" without reading. Now look where we are.
