heh. I haven’t had much time to poke around there. Perhaps it’s for the best.

In stock news, 13-F deadlines were the other day and I plan to go through some soon. Curious that Berkshire kept adding to $PARA despite all ad dependent and streaming companies eating poo poo recently. I do love some Star Trek through and Pluto seems the market winner for free streaming TV?

In celebration of BFC's new mod, and in recognition that this thread is now a dozen years old and has 2,700 pages, I'm hoping to finally re-write the OP and start a new one, likely by the end of the month.

I'm thinking something that touches on the basics of the following topics:
  • stocks
  • options
  • futures
  • fixed income
  • which brokers to use
  • how margin works
  • resources for FA/TA
  • other favorite web resources
Is there anything else people might want in this thing?

forex
bonds, as in actual bonds rather than bond funds, unless you're covering this in fixed income?
derivatives other than options and futures (e.g. forwards and swaps)? I don't know that this thread has ever talked about these before though
maybe a brief mention of crypto and why we don't talk about it here

Indeed. Best charting software out there. I use it daily.

TSLA is looking weak as gently caress. Anyone using TSLS as a vehicle to get short? TSLA is nearing it's 200W, wonder if we get a bounce soonish or if this pig is truly cooked. A lot of the Tesla bears I see on fintwit are foaming at the mouth to get short.

if you're gonna keep posting about this stock like how some people post about NDRA or how reddit treats GME, at least please post some of your thought process to go with it. otherwise I might have to start brainstorming my first mod challenge.

this comment in general goes for other thread / wsb meme stock comments, too. I'm hoping agronox's upcoming thread reboot manages to raise the bar just a tiny bit, perhaps back to pre-2021 days.

Speaking of which, two things I can use help with...

1. The previous iteration of this thread went from 2007-2010. But I know there was at least one trading thread before that, because I posted in it. Can anyone find it? I don't think it's in BFC. It was probably closed in September or October of 2007.

2. If anyone here has any thoughts on their brokers, whether good or bad, I'd like to put some in the next OP. So let me hear 'em! What's good or what sucks about Robinhood or TD or whatever?

TD Ameritrade bought or merged with Thinkorswim and its a great trading platform. Lots of charts and studies straight out of the box . If you think you have a handle on technical analysis its a good system. The downside is that it's a resource hog on my lovely old lapop and the learning curve is steep. Finding out how to get some information is a little tricky or at least it took longer than when I was using a Bloomberg terminal.

I'd give it a strong recommend.

I never used Fidelity's active trading platform but the web interface is nice.

I did some hunting on this and messaged Agronox various ancient candidates in the archives. But if anyone remembers something specific and good to link, please do.

I've had etrade forever and been generally happy with them, although the margin interest rates don't seem to be as competitive as others? Trade execution seems pretty good though. Happy with the software. Morgan Stanley did recently buy them though, and the customer support seems to be going downhill a bit.

Morgan Stanley in the past cheaped out on their non high net worth back office support. Like bare minimum call center in Utah. They didn't want anyone under $1m in investable assets at all.

And working both sides of the spectrum I get that a little. Can't tell you how many hours I've had to spend with some dude because he got flagged as a pattern day trader. It's a lot of hours spent doing non value add stuff

I remember walking away from etrade when they nearly got in trouble during the financial crisis in '07-'08. Seemed really sketchy for a brokerage.
