I wouldn't take them in Thailand, but what about Laos, and southern China?

I mean, I'm going to end up taking them anyway because I'm more inclined to listen to my doctor than people on the Internet, but basically I wish malaria didn't exist.

I was pretty freaked out about this issue before I left. After two weeks on doxy, which made me incredibly ill and lobster-face, I decided to stop. So far I have been to many remote locations in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam and have been A-Ok. Many times I even forgot to wear my insect repelent. But anyways, you should be fine if you take even the smallest precautions.

Pompous, thanks for the advice about the minsk. Never got a hold of the guy so I wasn't able to put it to use. Taking the busses around like a sucker.

A friend of mine would like to pay us an impromptu visit in Bangkok and wants to save on cost. Does anyone have experience with getting vaccines in the Bangkok hospital system? Was it relatively painless? I suppose if I uncover anything in my research I will report it to this thread.

I see no Cambodia write-up, so I suppose I will get on that one in the next few days. Insofar, Cambodia has been my favorite country in SE Asia!

Anyone got some recommendations for things to do in Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh other than the war museums/reunification palace/Notre Dame cathedral and Killing Fields/Genocide museum/Sisowath Quay respectively?

Also, do I really need to exchange for dong in Vietnam or will I get by okay on USD?

Phnom Penh:

For debauchery, go to the Heart of Darkness. They have 5 year old techno and a interesting mix of people. If smoking is your thing, there are bars off of the river front known as girly bars. I believe the Red Fox was the name of the best one. Just go in and order a drink and a "mixed". There is a casino there as well, which I never stepped foot in. If you aren't American, the shooting ranges might entice you, but they are also very expensive

Non-debauchery, the Cambodian cooking class run by the Frizz restaurant is a great deal. It is 20$ and you cook awesome food all day. There is a nature reserve outside of town which is pretty nice and has some loose safety standards. If you are feeling giving, go on a food run to a local village with the Choice charity guys. They hang out at the Chivas Shack guesthouse all day and go on runs on Sundays. Speaking of which, the Chivas Shack rules. Its pretty cheap, clean, right off the riverside and is an awesome place to meet people.

Food-wise Pnomh Penh is alright. Pops cafe on the river is really good Italian. In general all of the riverfront stuff is not that great and expensive. Friends restaurant was good for some Tapas but kind of expensive. The Vicious Cycle is good for Khmer food and western food. Plus the waiter, Da, is the man. Remember they will eat anything in Cambodia, so suspect meat is pretty common

Well I can't think of anything else but that should cover a day and a night and a hangover...

Does anyone know when the Red shirts are planning to rally in Bangkok? I am flying there from Trang in two days to do some shopping/see a friend off and don't want to get caught up in a riot.

Or maybe I do, that might add to the ongoing list of "Dangerous poo poo You Do in Touring SE Asia". Recent additions to this list include going to the wrong Thai/Myanmar border (don't go to Ban Ti) and hitchhiking around Hat Yai.

Speaking of dangerous, has anyone ever encountered some of the more hidden nightclubs in Bangkok? After a night out, my friends and I went into a restaurant to use the restroom, only to find a back door in the restroom concealing a man in sunglasses and an elevator. The man says, "go to floor 2", so we do and lo and behold there is a club full of prostitutes and their potential clients. This was all at 5:30 AM...

That secret elevator sounds cool as hell though and is something I'd like to try after a few beers.

As far as I can remember, it was across the street from the "spicy" bar that all the tuk-tuk drivers advertise on Khaoson Road. The spicy place was kind of lame, had a 300 baht cover but you get a free drink. I made the mistake of ordering a "spicy" drink which I am pretty sure had some kind of amphetamines in it. But that was more my fault than anyone elses. Just walk to the restaurant across the street and poke around the bathroom a bit.

What is teaching english like? Is it cool? A coworker's son just dropped everything (at 29) and jumped on a plane to Japan to do it. I'm curious what his life is about to be like

I know some guys teaching in Khon Kaen and they have a great lifestyle. Like PR said, they don't make tons of money, but more than enough to live very comfortably there. In fact you might want to check out Khon Kaen for teaching jobs, it seems like an alright place to be. Not many foreigners, but a good young Thai crowd.

Looks like its time to get the gently caress out of Bangkok, anyone staying through this rally? I am going down south to the beaches for a couple of days, then likely down to Malaysia.

Guess I will have to check out the night life recommendations on my next pass through BKK.

Malaysia should get more love in this thread!

Its slightly more expensive than Thailand, but not by much. It doesn't seem to have the same backpacker culture that the rest of SEA has, but there are still some. If you don't drink, Malaysia is great. If you do, stick to the cheap liquor when on the peninsula. On the islands beer is more affordable because its duty free, elsewhere its pricey.

So far I have been to..

Langkawi - Touristy island, kind of boring but still nice. Complete opposite of the party islands in Thailand if thats not your thing. The cable car there is awesome. Good roads for motorcycling. Apparently there are beaches that are really nice in the remote parts of the island.

Cameron Highlands - Amazing weather and scenery. Delicious Indian food and great hiking. The tourist attractions are actually worth a drat (rose museum, tea plantation, etc.)

Kuala Lumpur - Big city, nice place. You should be able to entertain yourself for 3-4 days. The Islamic arts museum and the planetarium are nice. I would recommend staying the Birds Nest guesthouse. Its cheap and you can cook your own food.

Temen Negara - If hiking in the jungles is your thing, this is a wet dream. It has the best jungle I have seen in SEA

Tioman Islands - I know some will disagree, but its the purtyiest island I have seen in SEA. There is a bit of trash lying around (ok quite a bit), but if you hike to the remote beaches it's much cleaner. ABC beach is cheap and easy. Make sure to hike to Monkey Bay if you go, which is about 1-2 hours away (a good hike).

Malacca - Good food, nice town. I wasn't too crazy about the place, felt really touristy.

I have also stopped over in a dozen other towns for a night which have all been cheap and accommodating. If you are looking for cheap places, the Chinese parts of towns have had reliably cheap hotels. If you are backpacking through SEA, I'd say Malaysia is a good place to end the trip out. As others have mentioned, the language is easy to pick up, but everyone speaks English. I also haven't noticed any double pricing or scams other than seeing some resorts charge high rates.

A lot of hostels/guesthouses have safety deposit boxes. I am traveling with someone so we just split private rooms so we could lock the door. We have been all over for 6 months and no one has stolen a thing. You should be fine.

Packing light is a good idea. I literally have 1 piece of clothing I left with and have replaced almost everything. Underwear is small enough and you can compact enough were its not an issue. If you really want to pack light, wash your underwear while you take a shower. This sounds odd, but its is amazingly effective.

Everyone offers a laundry service pretty much in all the countries. I have taken to just hand washing though, which will save a bit of cash. They can be a little expensive.

Where are you going btw, around Thailand?

Well the SEA leg of my trip is coming to an end tonight, gently caress. It went by so fast, but was easily the best 6 months of my life. Thanks again helpful goons.
