I would watch a TV channel that broadcast nothing but Malaysia's three main ethnic groups bitching about each other.

Just start talking to a Malaysian guy and within five minutes racial bitching will start coming out.

Hiya. Have I mentioned how much I hate Malay people today?

What's a good site for Kuala Lumpur? I just discovered how much cheaper it would be to go there than Chiang Mai and I'm intrigued.

Eh, I'd say that KL isn't the big tourist destination for Malaysia. It's usually just a hub for getting to other cities. There's stuff like Petaling Street which is the big Chinatown, but if you want history/culture go down to Malacca, while for food head north via Ipoh to Penang. East coast/East Malaysia is good for snorkelling/diving if that's what you're into, but I haven't been there in a while so I can't say if it's still any good.

It was the most boring city I've ever had the misfortune to be born in. It's always kinda sad when friends ask me about what's good about KL and you just have to kinda go "meh".

Also Malaysian food is the best, never miss it.

If you want north Vietnam and don't want Hanoi or Ha Long bay (you want them, though), I'll suggest Sapa. Really beautiful hiking around there, nice and cool weather.

I'm from KL and even I think it's pretty drat boring. The most touristy thing to do is go to/up the tall towers and shop around. Food's alright, but way better in other parts of Malaysia.

Yeah, I'm thinking of jettisoning my Vietnam idea for a mix of Thailand and Malaysia, but I had my heart set on the former. But I also think Vietnam's government is far more likely to say "shut it all down" at a moment's notice and for the tourism infrastructure to still be lacking.

I'm more interested in natural sights and historical museums, less interested in beaches, nightlife and temples so I think Thailand and Malaysia mixed together is doable for what I want to see vs spending all 3 weeks in Vietnam.

Malaysia is loosening up but everyone's still wearing masks if that helps you gauge things. For museums the only one I've been to in recent years is the Islamic Arts Museum in KL which is really cool, haven't visited any others in a long time so can't really speak to their quality. Natural sights will do you good at least. Are you planning on visiting East or West Malaysia? I feel like East might be better if you want more nature TBH. There's Mt Kinabalu of course but there's also stuff like Mulu Caves in Sarawak and a few great diving spots in east Sabah if you're more of an aquatic bent. Food's great either side at least.

Nah there must be more to it. Here in Singapore it's the same pattern and the mask wearing locals usually earn more and have far better and cheaper access to health care than the average American tourist.

Might just be a case of "got used to it". It's not mandatory here in Malaysia anymore but I still get the same feeling as I do in a dream where I forget to wear trousers out in public as when I forget to wear a mask.

Malaysia will let you stay on a tourist visa for 90 days and you can go cross a border to renew it indefinitely. If you gently caress up and forget and get caught you will be deported and barred from reentry though.

Can confirm that it's been stupid hot in SEA, Malaysia specifically lately. Thanks, climate change!

I haven't been to East Malaysia since I was a kid but assuming not much has changed in ~15 years or so I can second Gunung Mulu and Mt Kinabalu being great nature outings assuming you're fit enough.

Do bring a hat of some sort to Mulu though, a distinct childhood memory of mine was when a bat shat on my head when I was there. Luckily I was wearing a baseball cap.

do you mean the KL eco park in the middle of the city?

also seems like KL has pretty good public transportation? there's a rail system, an MRT and buses, right?

No, KL Bird Park is a separate park, and as mentioned it's right next to the Islamic Arts museum. I haven't been since I was a kid so I can't speak to its quality nowadays.

Yeah we have decent public transport. I wouldn't recommend the buses much but the MRT/LRT is fine (LRT is older and more cramped though).

Honestly KL is kind of a boring city, not much to do except for eat and shop.

RE: the person asking about Genting, sorry to say that there really isn't much to do there except for the amusement park or the casino.

Alcohol is easy to get here, it's just expensive because of sin taxes/extra import fees and is also stuck inside a special non-halal section of the store alongside all the pork (which doesn't make it harder to get, mind). In terms of quality or origin maybe aim for European/American wine over Australian, considering that the latter is closer to home for us.

If she has kids, it might be worth bringing some American-sized candy to really wow them.

Is there a store similar to Microcentre in Malaysia? I thought of getting some electronics whilst there and bringing them back since they're way more expensive where I live. Not sure what to search on Google maps.

C-Zone for smaller more personal stores, All-IT for big ones. I'm honestly not much of a hardware guy though, tbh.

It's pretty hellish here in KL and we're not one of the harder hit countries in SEA.
