Man, looking at SE asia cell phone providers is kind of hilarious. So much engrish and nonsensical stuff.

I'd be very interested in that as well. The hostel scene there seems kind of to suck, and I'm going to be there for almost 2 months, so something more permanent might be nice.

So I'm in Singapore now, which I'm absolutely loving, but have a question.

Was walking past some bars/clubs in touristy areas earlier tonight, and there were a bunch of girls outside trying to get our attention. Are they just bar girls, or is prostitution that open here?

So as long as I stick by the "No glove no love" rule I should be fine?

On a serious note there's a local clinic that should be able to see me tonight after work. The nurse didn't have much of a clue and suggested I come in and ask a doctor about what fast acting vaccines would benefit me.

Check to see if your Tetanus is up to date, which if it's been 10+ years, it probably isn't. That's kind of a very important one.

Hep A is a two shot series a month or so apart, should at least get the first shot now which will confer some protection at least.

While I'd rather not be having to get it, currently started Rabies series here in Phnom Penh today as well. drat cats. At least it's cheap as hell here, $18 a shot or so.

Did anyone ever go into the Casino at the Cambodia/Thailand border? What is it like? I really regret not going into it just to look. What was it like if you did? Basically craps limits and whatnot.

Tons of baccarat and slots, no poker. Some craps tables. Was perfectly willing to spend some money there since I had to spend a few days in Poipet for work, and there's absolutely nothing else to do in town, but there weren't any games that I knew how to play really.

Only cool things were they had computerized roulette tables, with a few touchscreen betting consoles around an actual wheel that would spin and a ball shoot out after everyone's bets were in; and a computerized blackjack table with a robot flipping cards.

I spent under 24 hours in Malacca and I felt that was far too long.

I'm figuring out the logistics of flying from Dublin to Bangkok with Etihad. There's a lay over in Abu Dhabi for 90 minutes, anyone know what Etihads policy is if there's a delay in the first flight that results in me missing the second?

Already emailed them but doubt I'll get an answer till tomorrow so just asking in the hope that someone knows.

As long as it's all on the same airline/booked on the same ticket I can't imagine there would be a problem.

Also don't forget your jacket if you go see a movie. I walked out of Lord of the Rings feeling more than a little ill from the extended exposure to 60ish temps in shorts and a T-shirt.

I was quite glad that I paid too much to see Inception in Bangkok in the nicest theater I've ever been to, the blankets they provided were definitely nice to have.

Unfortunately with this kind of question the answer is invariably that if you're on the tourist -sorry, 'traveller' trail they are all unneccessary. Unless you get really unlucky.

I'd get a rabies shot - the semi-wild animals you occasionally see around are usually better behaved than most pets but rabies is some nasty, nasty stuff.

Getting a rabies shot prior to exposure is somewhat pointless as well in this case.

Typical prophylactic series is I believe 2 shots prior to exposure, but you still need 3 shots after exposure. So, if you can't get access to rabies shots after exposure, you're still hosed, but if you can, it's essentially 100% effective, and very little difference whether you got prophylactic shots or not.

Not to mention how much cheaper it is getting the shots in SEA compared to the US. I got bit by a cat in Phnom Penh and got post-exposure shots out of an abundance of caution, and it cost me something like $30 per shot. In the US, it's more like $200 per shot.

I would get Hep A though, it's a cheap shot, lasts for a while, and it isn't something that you can consciously avoid like rabies and (to a degree) malaria. If I remember right you need 2 shots a month apart or so, but it's still fairly effective even after 1.

The cheapest way I've found to drink in Singapore was cheap 7-11 wine. It's still expensive as gently caress but it's got higher alcohol content than beer at least. Or ideally bring in a bottle of duty free booze, but thats not really an option if you're traveling by land.

My friend got yelled at by Customs for bringing in some cheap poo poo liquor from Malaysia, they let him keep it though.

Cheapest way I found there was getting the big bottles of beer at one of the hawker centers, like $5 for a liter of Tiger.

Also found some shops in little India that had to have been selling smuggled liquor or something, way, way cheaper than anything anywhere else there.

I would consider adjusting the schedule so that you fly into Hanoi and work your way down to HCMC and over to Siem Reap instead of flying into PP, I think it would cut out some unnecessary travel. Hanoi and HCMC aren't exactly close (roughly the length from Orlando to NYC, a good 18 hour drive on good road conditions), and traveling the length of the country once instead of twice would save a lot of time.

It's about a 5 or 6 hour ride from PP to SR, and I think about the same to HCMC, maybe more, I forget. You could in theory travel from PP to SR on day 1, hit up Angkor etc from sunset onwards on Day 2, and head back to PP/onwards to HCMC that afternoon, but I'd give at least an extra day in SR to see more and to not have to sit on a bus for 12+ hours straight. Head back to PP maybe that night if you feel like it, but I wouldn't head to HCMC right away if I were you, and really, not sure if you would be able to anyway, unless you took a taxi.

Thanks kalicki and Popelmon.
I might spend an extra day in PP then. How easy is it to find hotels and get train/bus tickets the day of, or shortly before I travel? I'm a pretty experienced traveler, but not in SE Asia.
And flying HCMC to Hanoi isn't that much, especially compared to the roundtrip ticket from & back to Korea.

As for finding places to stay, there's a ton of places available, shouldn't be a problem finding someplace to stay. Check hostelworld, or call a couple hotels, should be just fine on short notice.

I can only speak for Cambodia, but it's pretty easy for buses (there are no trains). At least in guesthouses and hostels, and presumably in hotels as well, you can easily talk to the front desk person and they'll arrange a spot for you for a bus whenever you want. I never actually took a bus there because long distance taxis were so cheap and easy to arrange. Much more comfortable to sit in a car than in a bus full of other people.

Hub to hub, in the US and Asia.

Check flights from somewhere like LAX or SFO to Singapore, KL, BKK, HK or Shanghai, and then do the low cost carriers to get to PP.
