This is among my very favorite current shows. I think season one gets great quickly and peaks at the finale, like it ought ta. Watch it!

And it may have been mentioned, I'm lazy; so let me say that I second That Mitchell and Webb Look Seasons 1-3. It's one of the most laugh-out-loud sketch comedies I've ever watched. It's done by the Peep Show guys, if you've seen that.

Nowadays, even kids' shows seem to be trying hard to make good stories and have competent writing. Like, any popular show lately isn't complete poo poo.

Power Rangers is from a time where it seems you could just heap poo poo on kids as long as there were flashy colors and funny noises. I think if my kids watched a show like that, I would write the producers a strongly-worded letter.

Really over-the-top raunchy college show. I'd say it has the Sex Drive effect: the genre is kind of dead, but it's hilarious enough to keep you watching.

I got the impression by the reviews that this would be different from 'just another derivative anime'; but after 4 episodes, I think that's exactly what it is.

If you don't like anime in general, I would just skip this one. I wish I had.

In fact, if you're a fan of zombie stories, the anime-ness of this actually ruins the coolness entirely.

I've only watched a little anime so maybe that works to my benefit. I've seen Ghost in the Shell, Speed Grapher and this in entirety, Speed Racer if that counts. I've watched bits of pieces of other things but they pretty much all sucked.

I disagree. It paid it's homages and stuck to the basic concept of 'run your rear end off and nowhere is safe' that is the bread and butter of zombie fiction. There is some minor character development and every character ends up contributing to their survival which reinforces that none of them survived by accident. It doesn't have that super-chaotic, "I have no loving idea what is going on" factor that I've experienced with a lot of the anime shows I've tried to watch and hated.

On the downside, the character art is very generic and almost all the girls are nearly identical. The main male character is of course handsome and his harem of girls fight over him and constantly try to seduce him. He is something of a milquetoast in the beginning but thankfully doesn't stay that way. Ultimately it's a cartoon and I didn't have high expectations to begin with.

I think you're right; we've come at it from different places. It's a genre that just makes me grimace to think about, so I was probably ready to hate it.

So I change my vote from, "Don't watch it" to "I really didn't care for it".

EDIT: Since I'm already here, I just watched 13 Assassins. It was fine. Definitely had a 7 Samurai sort of feel to it, but I reckon there's probably a lot of samurai movies that do. It was a solid watch, but nothing I'd go out of my way for. Very visceral. Lots of "samurai code" stuff goin' on.

I would like to recommend Last Night. The premise from the beginning is that the world is 6 hours from ending. You find this out at the start, everybody in the movie knows that it's coming, though the movie doesn't tell you why.

While the movie isn't so much about that mystery as it is about the several different people it focuses on in their last hours, that tantalizing premise kept me rapt and had my insides tied up the whole time.

Goin' 3.5 out of 5 stars here.

I give props to Lost. They made some crazy fuckin' storyline tangents that I was sure they were going to leave dangling. But I think they did very well wrapping up most of them. I was bored for the first half season, but was hooked afterwards.

North Face (Nordwand) is a great German film about a Pre-World War II attempt to climb the north wall of the Eiger mountain in the Swiss Alps. It's a well-put-together historical fiction, and will have your nails dug into your chair. I recommend checking out some wikipedia pages about the incident afterwards to appreciate how accurately the movie portrays things. I've been reading about dangerous mountain-climbing expeditions non-stop lately; so exciting.

Escanaba in da Moonlight is a odd thing. Stars Jeff Daniels. I haven't seen it recently enough to get into details, but it's kind of a weird, supernatural comedy about a family out on a hunting trip. Daniels' character is haunted by the shame of being a 43 year old who's never bagged a buck.

I ran into a show I like by complete accident. I was frustrated because I felt like there was nothing left on Netflix; and so I angrily, randomly click Switched at Birth - an ABC Family drama.

I'm 25 episodes into it now, and I'm hooked. I like the characters, I like the writing, and I like the story. One cool thing about it is the heavy focus on deaf culture. Several main characters are deaf, and so it's pretty educational to learn about difficulties they put up with, and with common deaf courtesy. In fact, there are whole scenes of dialogue that have no noise, except ambient background noise, whatsoever.

So, I'm recommending it more because I was surprised about how serviceable it is (not necessarily that it's amazing)

The show's pretty good but I feel like they didn't really have a concrete idea of what they were going to do once the alternate universe and shape shifters were introduced. I find myself liking the mystery of the week episodes better than the story related ones. I'd recommend it though. It's heavily influenced by the X-Files; not that that's a bad thing.

I think I found myself in the trap of feeling like it was TOO similar to X-Files at the beginning, and I liked it less - as an x-files clone. Maybe time to check it out again. Same reason I couldn't enjoy Parks & Rec at first; because it felt like such a blatant The Office clone.

Hatfields & McCoys is up. 3 episodes, each is about 90 minutes. Kevin Costner, Bill Paxton. It's pretty sweet. Not too cerebral, but the escalation of violence is believable. I really liked it. IMO, Kevin Costner is best in roles where he's supposed to be stoic and emotionless; so this was pretty much ideal.

It's a great example of special effects serving the story. They're all horrifyingly believable, but the effects don't exist for their own sake if that makes sense.
