Lions and Hyenas A National Geographic special that covers lions, hyenas, and how they hate the poo poo out of each other. This documentary shows some really vicious kills, especially one where a pride leader gets pissed off and breaks a hyena matriarch's back. It also shows how mistaken the "male lions are lazy" notion is. While the female lions do most of the hunting, the male lions defend territory, and seriously gently caress up some hyenas in this documentary. Here's your uber-saddening documentary of the day: Every F***ing Day http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlqELHHKCl8 http://www.hbo.com/documentaries/every-f-ing-day-of-my-life/index.html It's about an Oregeon woman, named Wendy, for murder of her long time abusive husband. The documentary encompasses her life and marriage to husband Randy, their life, his abuse, his murder, and the final 4 days leading up to her sentencing and incarceration. Her family recounts the times when he used to beat her and his children. This story is well told by the Wendy, the children, and the people who witnessed this perpetual violent treatment of her family. It's complemented by the fact that Randy took tons of home videos which shed an interesting light into their lives Wendy's story withstanding brutal beatings from her husband because she believed she had no where else to turn and to save her kids. To hear what this family had to live through and especially Wendy had to live through in the 20+ years of sadistic abuse is heartbreaking by showing a very dark side of humanity in her husband, while providing a bleak, but somewhat happy ending in her saga. This was such a hard documentary to watch. You don't want to believe people can be so cruel and sadistic to the one's that trust them most, yet it happens. I don't know if it's a bully mentality mixed with boredom or what of many other possible motives that would lead a man to do what he did.

Chiming in with rage over Attenborough being replaced by Oprah for Life. I liked Sigourney Weaver on Planet Earth, but you can't beat Attenborough in nature docs. And I really dislike Oprah and there's nothing special or interesting about her voice. If I end up eventually buying Life I better be able to find it with Attenborough's narration. I'm still giddy like a schoolgirl with anticipation over Life. I'll just ignore the fact that it's Oprah telling me all that cool poo poo. Also, thanks to whomever posted that "The Human Face" docu, I think I saw part of it on TV years ago and never knew what it was called. I love me some anthropological/sociological documentaries, which is why Desmond Morris's The Human Animal is one of my favorites. Morris describes it as "A study of human behavior from a zoological perspective" and it's fascinating. It's also up on Google video. There weren't any organizations to help them leave the life until a former child prostitute started an organization called GEMS to try and help girls get a way out. Completely heartbreaking but optimistic.

The Nomi Song A very decent documentary about Klaus Nomi. He was probably the most bizarre musician of the 80s, mixing pop music with opera and donning and alien persona. His live acts were an interesting bit of avant garde theater. He's probably best known for appearing live with David Bowie on Saturday Night Live in 1979. A Rough History of Disbelief A rather interesting documentary by Jonathan Miller that touches on the philosophy and politics of atheism, deism and skeptical/rational thinking throughout the program, but mainly focuses on the history of what is commonly call atheism. He is a very good narrator and does well to remain thoughtful and introspective when talking about his own philosophy. I'll leave it to the video descriptions to describe each segment's content. Part 1: Shadows of Doubt Jonathan Miller visits the absent Twin Towers to consider the religious implications of 9/11 and meets Arthur Miller and the philosopher Colin McGinn. It tells the tale of Malmo's "turning torso" residential building, and the conflicts between the designer, Santiago Calatrava, and the head of the housing association, Johnny Orback. A good documentary if you want to look at how animals are treated in society, but want to leave out the crazy PETA poo poo, look at the documentary Earthlings. It's very powerful and doesn't sugar coat anything. Be careful though, We saw this with an entire class, and there wasn't a person who wasn't crying. Because of her, a majority of cattle slaughter facilities have guidelines to make sure that the animals are treated properly, such as making sure that they aren't upset or afraid leading up to their death, and their death is as quick and instant as possible. Because of her disorder, she has an incredible empathy with animals, and she's been able to use that to significantly improve the treatment of livestock as a result.

These guys really have nothing except for the thrill of riding a cart down a hill 60 kilometers an hour. The last few minutes are really well done. Thanks for posting this.
