Standing in the Shadows of Motown A great 2002 BBC4 documentary (narrated by Andre Braugher) detailing the history and experiences of The Funk Brothers, the mostly unrecognised studio musicians who provided the strong soul and R&B backbone for many of the motor city's greatest hits. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5f8LPiUQnQ

Duzzy Funlop posted:Browsed back a couple of pages, but didn't find anything going back till early 2012. Would anybody know of any particularly good documentaries both about the Tsunami in Japan or the meltdown in Fukushima? I'd be interested both in good coverage from back in 2011, as well as documentaries revisiting the whole thing now that we're two (?) years past the disaster. Just last week the BBC showed an fascinating doc My Atomic Aunt on the experiences of a local family who are now living on the edge of the exclusion zone. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01r7bpt

Prickly Pete posted:This may have come up already, but does anyone have any recommendations for documentaries about the cold war? I'm really fond of The Target is Your Brain, a 1984 Soviet doc about the idealogical warfare of American pop culture. Edit, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oM7jUu9shS4

cloudchamber posted:Are you sure this is real? It's on the same YouTube channel as that fake North Korea propaganda movie and there's an absolute dearth of info about the film on the internet. That's a good question for which I don't have any answer. It comes across as real, but given the core subject it'd also be highly appropriate for it to be an elaborate hoax. Good on you for keeping your weapons of perception sharp and your brain hard to target! Peas and Rice posted:For other cold war / atomic age documentaries, Trinity and Beyond: the Atomic Bomb Movie (and its several sequels) is a great look at the development of the American nuclear weapons program. Yup, that's a great one. There's also lots of intriguing material on the CIA's YouTube channel, such as this 1982 briefing on the (perceived) state of the Soviet space program: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzMYNONhfs4

feedmyleg posted:Anyone have any animal documentaries they've particularly enjoyed lately? I like ones that are more chill mood pieces with great nature footage than necessarily digging into the science or history, though a combo of all of that can be nice. Can't stand talking heads unless it's the occasional "Attenborough standing in a museum for 15 seconds," definitely prefer voiceover style. PBS recently released a pair of 1 hour documentary episodes on little animals going on big journeys. Incredible footage of a beanie baby jumping between branches in moonlight, or the tiniest of baby turtles navigating across a busy highway. They're narrated, and admit to cheating the footage for story's sake at the start of each episode.
