If you like sad endings that make you feel empty and that force you to lose faith in humanity, watch this. And then Dear Zachary. And then Occupation 101.
Enjoy your suicide. :smithicide:

And then try looking for Pardise Lost, about the West Memphis Three. I can't find the actual film around.

The Staircase About a bizarre murder trial, from the point of view of a man accused of killing his wife.

Don't read anything about the case before watching it.

Black Tar Heroine. One of the best docs about drug use. The underground 90's music makes it.

I'm watching this, and I really think that this is very interesting.
However, despite the fact that the case is real (I think), are these the real people?

Yep, those are the real people. I assume that the suspect was just a friend of the filmmaker.

EDIT: Oops just saw this, could anyone point me to this extra information?

Everything is at least mentioned on this site:

Though you would apparently have to get this book for real citations:

Basically, any evidence that the defense couldn't poke holes in (most of the key stuff) was left out of the documentary.

That's the one, thank you very much!

By the way, the second part is called "seven plus seven" instead of 14up. That confused me for a while. Turns out you aren't missing much if you miss the second part, so don't bother looking too hard for it, like I did. Interesting series, though. There is an American version of this project in the works; I think they're up to 28 now, though I can't remember the name of it.

Anyone have any recommendations for American Revolution documentaries? History Channel had a series running for the fourth, and it really sparked my interest again.

The only one I've found is Liberty: An American Revolution, which is an old PBS one that isn't the greatest, but was a nice way to get back into the history.

As an interesting side topic, The War That Made America was pretty well made. But instead of Revolution, it's actually about the French and Indian War (Seven Years War).

I'd also recommend Sicko to a much greater degree than Bowling for Columbine. In Sicko, Moore simply stayed the Hell out of the way and let the story speak. In Bowling, there was some shady editing, splicing together whole sentences that nobody actually said, leading up to a lame "confrontation" where Moore actually comes across as the bigger rear end in a top hat when he's trying (and failing) to do a hit job on Charlton Heston.

Any recommendations for good documentaries on the industrial revolution and/or the development of steam power? This has always been a fascinating era of history for me.

Half of this can be found in Connections.

Not about the industrial revolution or society itself, but Episodes 3 and 6 will tell you how the steam engine slowly arose from fumbling with mines and cannon boring, etc..

I agree that the first two movies do give off a very alex jones-ish conspiracy vibe in some spots(the 9/11 stuff was a little much for me), but I was under the impression that all the religion stuff was pretty much spot on for the most part.

Oh heavens no. The Son [of God] is not named after The Sun. The word Son comes from the German "Sohn", which wasn't known to anyone in the ancient Middle East.

The idea that Sun worship was related to Sun worship appears to be lifted from that Star Trek original series episode with the Roman gladiators. There is no actual relationship. So yeah, read the skepticproject article posted a bit ago.

I'll have to check out the 3rd part. While it was striking that a major ecology textbook could be traced to systems analysis & equilibrium theory, I thought it was a bit of a stretch to draw some sort of cause and effect relationship between cyberpunk internet ideology and Alan Greenspan's vision of global capitalism.

Such a link is especially odd, since Objectivists consider balance-of-nature environmentalism to be evil.

In the Middle Ages, their weapon was the fear of God. In the nineteenth century, they still invoked the fear of God -- for instance, they opposed the use of anesthesia on the grounds that it defies God's will, since God intended men to suffer. When this weapon wore out, they invoked the will of the collective, the group, the nation. But since this weapon has collapsed in their hands, they are now reduced, like cornered animals, to baring their teeth and their souls, and to proclaiming that man has no right to exist -- by the divine will of trees and slugs.
