Noisy and "faded". I brought the vibrancy up but saturation down and then lifted the black point a bit so there's no true black.

I need to figure out a good flash situation for doing the macros.

I have a 50 reversed to a 135 for the macro and both lenses are 3.5 so unless in really good light, I have to use really high ISO and it's killing me with noise. I'd like to be able to shoot much faster shutter speeds too and/or use flash to freeze motion.

A lot of macro shooters roll their own solutions with speedlights, Pringles tubes, and construction paper. There are off-the-shelf solutions but they get expensive fast. The one I use is the Yongnuo YN24EX which was the cheapest non-garbage option I found.
https://th.hkyongnuo.com/products/yn24ex

Note that although they only provide specific versions for Sony or Canon, the flash should work with any camera that has a centre-pin hotshoe. You'll just not have TTL or wakeup functionality.

Thank you for the recommendation. I owned yongnuo a long time ago for Speedlite. Forgot how much cheaper they were than brand name.

I have been wanting to get into macro photography and now that I have to "take it easy" and stay off my feet for a while I have the time to do it. I am looking for beginner level advice for getting macro shots around the house and garden of various subjects including flowers and insects.

I have a Fuji XT3 with 16mm F2.8 and 50mm F2 lenses.

The macro-extension-x-global.pdf on the Fuji website shows the MCEX-11 gives 0.84/0.40 magnification for the 16mm/50mm while the MCEX-16 gives 1.16/0.51. Would the MCEX-11 be a better/more forgiving choice for a beginner?

Also any advice on reasonably priced flashguns for macro?

Sorry if there is already advice within the thread regarding this but I have only just started reading it, a link would be appreciated.

Does it mention the MFD/working distance at those mags? Shorter focal lengths are generally harder to use because you have to get closer to the subject.

For flashes you generally want something like a Godox with TTL but you need to be able to aim it at the subject and flashes like that are generally designed to be bounced you can make up for it by using a snoot/diffuser, specific macro flashes are mounted close to the subject and can be pointed directly at it, but these tend to be more expensive and harder to diffuse.

People often get a bracket and a trigger etc, there's a lot of messing with flashes in the macro world.

This video is a decent look at the options and techniques for field macro

Thanks for the reply, I hope the list below answers your question.

I'm assuming that MFD="Shortest shooting distance"
The PDF is at https://dl.fujifilm-x.com/global/products/accessories/mcex/pdf/macro-extension-x-global.pdf

  • XF16mm F2.8
    • MCEX-11
      • MAG 0.84
      • WD 9
      • MFD 84
    • MCEX-16
      • MAG 1.16
      • WD 4
      • MFD 84
  • XF50mm F2
    • MCEX-11
      • MAG 0.40
      • WD 131
      • MFD 220
    • MCEX-16
      • MAG 0.51
      • WD 106
      • MFD 200

Could you recommend any particular flash model (godox or otherwise) at around the £100 mark? The Godox MF12 is around that price, any good?

jarlywarly
Aug 31, 2018
MFD is distance from sensor to subject
WD is distance from lens front element to subject.

A Godox TT350 is a good start

The pdf only has the following three headings per extension tube.
Max.Magnification
Working distance(mm)
Shortest shooting distance(mm)

So would that last one be the MFD?

Yeah it would make sense given the numbers.

There are no drones here. No way no how.
I do some macro with my XT-4 and I use Laowa lenses. If you are ok with a manual only lens and money is a concern you might want to look into those too.

The Godox flash is what I wish I just bought at the start. Also make sure you get a diffuser, it makes a huge difference with how your photos turn out. My most recent photos were taken without one and I don't like the look as much.

For your stated stuff yeah the longer focal lengths and working distances are much more appropriate.
