What I find very funny about this is that 80% of BMW 1-series owners thought their car is already front wheel drive.

There's something very very wrong about that.

I read on Allpar (can't seem to find it now) that when they were designing the LH cars, they polled people who drove MBs and BMWS and very few of them knew which wheels were driven. So that 80% of people think a small hatchback like the 1 series is FWD is hardly suprising.

Only BMW enthusiasts care about RWD BMWs and there's far less enthusiasts than you might think. Let's face it, a large majority of people who own and drive BMWs daily drive it to and from work for the image and luxury alone. If anything the cars being RWD probably annoy this demographic in winter conditions. Seems like AWD's becoming the trendy mode de jour for that crowd these days anyway so I'm not surprised that BMW's going to put out a FWD vehicle for those that have issues with the winter driving or simply don't give a gently caress.

It doesn't have four doors so you can't fit the whole family into it but even if you could forgive it for not having four doors then it's more of an issue because the average 600 pound American can't fit into it because lol all americans are fat lol and his 3 400 pound children can't squeeze into the rear seats because there's a seat into the way because lol all american children are fat too lol.

I honestly hate each and every American family man for the lack of hatches like this in America because every single one of them, while car shopping, has to open their big mouth and blurt out 'But I can't fit my family in it!' every time they look at a two door car prompting that automaker to get rid of it with the next revision. Hell even Hyundai's getting rid of the 3DR hatch Accent with the next body design because of those assholes and a 3DR hatch version of that car is practically a tradition. Hate. Rage.

I really like hatches too, but I think their role is to be cheap. I wish that we had a wide selection of cheap, efficient, hatches with 1.3L engines and stick shifts that I could drive around at WOT all the time.

The problem isn't that we are too fat, but rather that gas is so cheap here. These nice Euro hatches are not cheap by our standards, and Americans figure that if you are going to spend decent money on a car, it may as well be big and comfortable.

Frankly, I agree with it to some degree. I'm sure that these Focus RSes are expensive, and if it was my dollar I would want something RWD for the money.

Cross posting for those that don't read the Mustang thread.

Don Frey, the man who designed the Mustang, has died.

No matter what you think of the car and what it's become, I think we can all agree that the man penned an iconic vehicle that is a part of American history.

quote:

Donald N. Frey, the leader of the original Ford Mustang design team and creator of the original prototype, passed away on March 5. He lived to 86.

In reading the obituary in the New York Times, I was struck at how close Ford came to not making the iconic pony car at all. According to the article, Frey and his team secretly met with Lee Iacocca "in a motel at night and in a storage room by day" to work on the Mustang -even though it wasn't yet approved by top management.

Did this rogue team know what it was doing? Well, the debut of the Mustang at the 1964 New York World's Fair brought more attention to the car than they expected. Ford figured it would sell about 80,000 units in the first year, according to the Times. The Mustang went on to sell more than one million examples in the first two years. Yes, they were on to something.

I'm not sure if I like it yet or not, but, news today on the Nissan Leaf:

NYT

quote:

Nissan Leaf Electric Car Priced at $32,780
By JIM MOTAVALLI
The 2011 Nissan Leaf will go on sale at the end of the year. The 2011 Nissan Leaf will go on sale at the end of the year.

The 2011 Nissan Leaf battery electric car, which will go on sale in the United States in December, will have a manufacturers suggested retail price of $32,780, a Nissan spokesman, Mark Perry, said Tuesday morning. Nissan prefers to describe the price as $25,280 inclusive of a $7,500 federal income tax credit.

According to Mr. Perry, the standard SV trim level will include many options, including a navigation system, automatic temperature control, an audio system with satellite radio and remote control features that will allow the car to be both preheated and precooled while connected to a wall outlet.

For $940, customers can move up to SL trim, which includes a rearview camera, foglights and a spoiler-mounted solar panel. The Leaf can also be leased. Customers can put $1,999 down and pay $349 a month, Mr. Perry said. The Leaf home charger (called “a charging dock” and built and installed by Nissan partner AeroVironment) will be sold for $2,200, or leased for $30 a month. Consumers can also get a federal tax credit for installing a charger, equal to 50 percent of the total cost up to $2,000.

Nissan said it has a list of 85,000 “hand raisers” who have indicated an interest in the car. On April 20, these people will be offered a chance to move to reservation status, which involves paying a refundable $99 reservation fee. Reservations trigger a visit from a certified electrician, who will make a written estimate of what it will cost to install a charging dock.

Delivery of the cars will begin in 20 launch markets (including Washington State, Oregon, California, Arizona, Tennessee, Texas, Florida, North Carolina and Massachusetts). By the end of 2011, Nissan expects the car to be available nationwide.

I dunno. It's a little bug-eyed, not the most attractive car. But it's cool to see purchaseable, production electric cars from major manufacturers, and the tax rebates makes it reasonably affordable.

Does it drive and feel like an econobox? If so, then this $25,000 car costs $10,000 more than a comparable new economy car, and assuming 30mpg and $3/gal that $10,000 can buy enough gas to go 100,000 miles.

In fairness, they are building 500 of them, so at least they're keeping with the origins of the name, but it's like the stupid girlie-pants excuse for an Escort RS2000 they spat out in the '90s.

Build something "RS500" if you want, but it should be a homologation special - in this case, preferably based on the WRC car. Not a bit of tweaking and a paintjob to upsell "exclusivity". Also, given that they supposedly get this extra power without impacting either emissions of fuel consumption ( :raise: ), why can't they just upgrade the standard car, or sell it as a premium pack?

I don't think it's been confirmed anywhere if it's FWD or not, though maybe I'm mistaken since I don't F5 jalopnik all day. I sure as gently caress hope it's not, otherwise it really is pretty stupid to pull that name out when the only difference is just some extra power. As it is, they might be building just 500 of them, but this smells of the limited edition Mustangs more than it does of homologation requirements like it was for the previous RS500.

If the acceleration figures are to be trusted, the extra 125hp translate into a 0.5 second advantage over the Sierra, so I'm curious how that would work out in the real world. Also lol it's only 0.1 seconds faster (if that) than the Cossie Escort, though I'm using metric wikipedia numbers as it's impossible to find stock performances anywhere.
