I read on Allpar (can't seem to find it now) that when they were designing the LH cars, they polled people who drove MBs and BMWS and very few of them knew which wheels were driven. So that 80% of people think a small hatchback like the 1 series is FWD is hardly suprising.

Only BMW enthusiasts care about RWD BMWs and there's far less enthusiasts than you might think. Let's face it, a large majority of people who own and drive BMWs daily drive it to and from work for the image and luxury alone. If anything the cars being RWD probably annoy this demographic in winter conditions. Seems like AWD's becoming the trendy mode de jour for that crowd these days anyway so I'm not surprised that BMW's going to put out a FWD vehicle for those that have issues with the winter driving or simply don't give a gently caress.

I honestly hate each and every American family man for the lack of hatches like this in America because every single one of them, while car shopping, has to open their big mouth and blurt out 'But I can't fit my family in it!' every time they look at a two door car prompting that automaker to get rid of it with the next revision. Hell even Hyundai's getting rid of the 3DR hatch Accent with the next body design because of those assholes and a 3DR hatch version of that car is practically a tradition. Hate. Rage.

I really like hatches too, but I think their role is to be cheap. I wish that we had a wide selection of cheap, efficient, hatches with 1.3L engines and stick shifts that I could drive around at WOT all the time.

The problem isn't that we are too fat, but rather that gas is so cheap here. These nice Euro hatches are not cheap by our standards, and Americans figure that if you are going to spend decent money on a car, it may as well be big and comfortable.

Frankly, I agree with it to some degree. I'm sure that these Focus RSes are expensive, and if it was my dollar I would want something RWD for the money.

I love hatches but I really wish they would make AWD or RWD variants instead of the same old FWD torque steer machines. For the money the RS500 costs i'd look into something RWD or AWD any day as 350hp going to the front wheels is just begging to be driven into a tree.

I saw a Focus RS in downtown Oslo the other day.
And I have to say, it looked cheap and plasticky. It also looked totally out of place.. almost like a clown car.
Considering the fact that it costs 125000$ over here, I'd never get one. Even if I did have that kind of money to spend on a car..

Don Frey, the man who designed the Mustang, has died.

No matter what you think of the car and what it's become, I think we can all agree that the man penned an iconic vehicle that is a part of American history.

Does it drive and feel like an econobox? If so, then this $25,000 car costs $10,000 more than a comparable new economy car, and assuming 30mpg and $3/gal that $10,000 can buy enough gas to go 100,000 miles.

Build something "RS500" if you want, but it should be a homologation special - in this case, preferably based on the WRC car. Not a bit of tweaking and a paintjob to upsell "exclusivity". Prices for electric cars will drop when volume blah blah you get the idea. Maybe in 15 years I can buy something with the looks and performance of a Tesla Roadster, but with better battery life and shorter charge-time, for $30k. Anything that brings that day closer is a good thing.

I don't think it's been confirmed anywhere if it's FWD or not, though maybe I'm mistaken since I don't F5 jalopnik all day. I sure as gently caress hope it's not, otherwise it really is pretty stupid to pull that name out when the only difference is just some extra power. As it is, they might be building just 500 of them, but this smells of the limited edition Mustangs more than it does of homologation requirements like it was for the previous RS500.

If the acceleration figures are to be trusted, the extra 125hp translate into a 0.5 second advantage over the Sierra, so I'm curious how that would work out in the real world. Also lol it's only 0.1 seconds faster (if that) than the Cossie Escort, though I'm using metric wikipedia numbers as it's impossible to find stock performances anywhere.

Not all RS cars were AWD though, even the "proper" ones. The original Escorts as well as the early Sierras were RWD, IIRC. It doesn't bug me too much that they kept the original layout, just that it's FWD with 350hp.

Oh well, maybe there is going to be Focus RS Cosworth with 4-500hp and AWD.

I'm not specifically interested in the Leaf but I do wish them best of luck for the reasons you state. Seriously, even if it's not profitable/not a great car/whatever, it's an interesting step forward. Maybe it won't pan out, maybe it will, but dudes who are like "well it ain't cost effective" are the guys that were bitching about the newfangled horseless carriage in 1900 so I'm not gonna take them seriously.

I got excited when I first heard about the Leaf, then I saw it. I've heard there's going to be an BEV Ford Focus coming out soon as well, but I haven't heard many details on it yet. But in a years time if we have the option to get a fully battery electric vehicle from Nissan and Ford I'll be really happy about the future.
