From what you said in the post above, the Runelord series sounds great for some cherry picking. In addition, the Kingmaker series that got mentioned in here sounds like an idea mine as well.

So, two questions: what's the release schedule for the Kingmaker series, and do you have any recommendations for converting the stats in the Pathfinder adventures to 4th edition Dungeons and Dragons?

Well, if you try to run the game straight through it, there'd probably be some balance issues with the encounters... but if you're going to be just picking bits and pieces out, you'd probably be better off just grabbing equivalent monsters from the 4E Monster Manuals and generating equivalent NPC's in a character generator. Anyhoo, there's this:

Which edition was supposed to be the video-gamey one again?

Assuming that failing the time limited scenario in question doesn't screw up the whole adventure, it would be proper to prepare for the possibility that the characters do not achieve the said goals in the given time frame. That's how I look at it. Unless you've been gaming with the same people for a very long time, you don't really know how well they're going to react to a given set of situations, so you should always take into account that they don't care and just want to burn the town down. But as far as a prewritten module goes, there are plenty of ways to reveal to the players/characters what course of action they should be taking and what is important, without going right out and saying "hey guys you need to do this cause thats the whole module".

As for it being a method for dealing with spellcaster to melee balance issues, I think its quite proper to a point, as a common complaint from some spellcasters is not getting enough periods of rest to re queue their spells... and that's just part of the system. Well, if you're in the middle of an enemy stronghold with guards everywhere looking for the party... its not like the whole party is going to cram themselves into a closet for the night. The spellcasters will learn to be more frugal. Press on.

(To add to that, there's nothing stopping the whole party from insisting on trying to camp for the night, but I'll definitely leave it up to the dice to see whether they're discovered. And if they have a limited amount of time, there will of course, be consequences. That's just DMing 101.)

I'm not against time-limited adventures at all. But if the adventure doesn't have ramifications for failing to beat the time limit, then there isn't really a time limit at all, is there? And following that, one of the best ways to include possible ramifications into the game is to have the players face losing an NPC or building that they invested time and emotion into- such as in the middle of a larger campaign. Unless you're throwing world-ending plots during the first level, characters really don't have much invested in Jimmy the Prince beyond the reward.

Time limits are curve-balls to be inserted into the larger game's vision because there simply has to be player agency overall rather than saving/capturing the DM's MacGuffin. As a day one expectation in order to balance the game, time limits are terrible.

Oh, I wouldn't go as far to say that you can't have a time limited quest theme right off the bat... i think that would work if done right. I mean, you basically get that at Con one shot games in which they're slotted for a specific period of time. Although in theory that's a difference case(real world limit, not in game), it does tend to bleed off and you obviously don't have adventures spanning weeks of in game time, short of basically going "three weeks pass by" etc...

In fact, one complaint I've seen of Pathfinder Society scenarios from spellcasters is specifically not having rest periods to reload on spells.

Obviously the situation is different in a home game campaign... and yeah, it's something to throw in there now and then, but not as a general story mechanic...

But as before, rather than making it quest based, I prefer to do the same but make it situational based... as I mentioned before with the "camping here is unadvised" line of thought, it could lead to an additional unwanted encounter. IE, the party isn't going to bed after after couple of encounters. If you're storming a stronghold or some such it really doesn't make sense to shack up and go to bed for 6 hours, unless you've basically torn the place to pieces already. Again, you don't force the players to make this decision, but if they're say... being pursued by very intent supernatural enemies, they would definitely be betting against the house on a roll.

Fairly interesting regardless of what PnP you play. Just to warn ya, its 1 hr long. :bravo2:

One interesting thing he says is "Paizo is developing 3 Iphone apps for the Pathfinder Role Playing Game. Those should be released relatively shortly." "One of the apps is called the Live Character Sheet..." Apparently it works networked, and you can say, cast bless and select the other characters and everyone's iphone gets updated...

My gut tells me that its a bad idea for a publisher to get in the software business, but then again, maybe the software will be really great... I'm rather curious as to what the two other products are...

Recently there has been some news of a mystery product from Lone Wolf:

Lone Wolf has been talking about adding the Bestiary and new player class data sets to Hero Lab... they also hinted at a bit more(above). And yet now it seems things are delayed until they have more 'talks' with Paizo.

It just surprises me that some mystery product that has White Wolf blabbing about it on their front page doesn't seem to interest Paizo too much... I wonder if Paizo is giving third party devs the run around because they've got some of their own stuff up their sleeve. yeah.

My guesses: Monster app and combat app(along the same lines as the character sheet deal).

While that rationality is true to an extent, I'd like to note that an even greater influence on this decision was WoTC abandoning the Open Games License for the newer GSL. In fact, a rather large and vocal proponent of Paizo's system have been freelance writers who were previously publishing stuff for Goodman Games and similar third party supplement companies, as well as the in print versions of Dragon and Dungeon. And although Goodman Games has gone on to 4E, many of those same writers have stopped writing for them simply because they don't want to be limited to that restrictive license(as well as a seeming dislike to the system). A portion of those same authors have written a good amount of the material contained in Pathfinder Companion supplements, Pathfinder Chronicles supplements, and Pathfinder Society modules, as well as articles in Kobold Quarterly.

Paizo simply has a large number of excellent writers and the fans know it.

Well, the whole game is basically available for free if you're OK with not having printed books. So you really can check it out without really forking over much cash if you're willing to play without a physical rulebook.

And if you're a real cheap rear end, the PF SRD website was converted to a nice two column PDF awhile back:

I actually tend to use it now and then as except for certain Paizo copyrighted material, its practically a 1 for 1 to the Core Rulebook... and the Core Rulebook PDF is like some kind of graphical beast from hell and views like molasses on even my gaming box.

The problem with the GSL wasn't 'THEY CONTROL US' or any of thsat hysteria bullshit. The problem was a genuinly horrible clause in the original GSL that forbade a company from publishing or even selling OGL products while they also had GSL products.

It required them to clear their OGL stock and abandon the OGL, if they were going to publish GSL products.

Mow this is IIRC no longer the case with the GSL. Last I checked, all you have to do is render them celarly distinct in a product. But back then for a company of any size, it was a huge deal, involving not only a complete change in their product line, but the end of their old product lines.

This was the real problem with the GSL. Everything else is bullshit but this is a straight up bad thing, and the only real mistake that WOTC made- and it's a big one. It's clearly a clause inserted by some executive type jackass, and it's since been erased, but the damage is well and truly done.

I think you're ignoring several other fundamental differences between the GSL and OGL keeping many 3rd party publishers away from it... even with the revised version. These are current unless they've revised the GSL again in the last few months.

1. WoTC reserves the right to modify the agreement at any time. Hence, if they make a change you don't want to agree to, well you can no longer distribute your product.

2. You can't just slap the GSL license on your product and ship it. You have to deal with WoTC directly before attempting to publish your product.

3. WoTC reserves the right to terminate your license at any time. WoTC also reserves the right to terminate the GSL completely, in which you case you get a whopping six months to sell your stock and then its done.

4. You basically can't redefine almost anything that's in the core rulebooks. All those cool d20 based custom gameworld products? Gone! You can't describe character creation or advancement at all. It's their way, or the highway.

Well, no OGL vs GSL argument is complete without mentioning this for the billionth time.

What does that have to do with the GSL you say? It has to do with the attitude of the company that crafted it and what kind of shenanigans they are capable of...

The only thing Paizo has on the drawing board is some suite of apps for the Iphone/Ipad. Haven't heard anything about it for months... probably a long way off.

Hero Lab is tops. The UI is sensible. You can create a character in a few minutes, easy. They update it constantly, sometimes within a few days of a new book being out. Was worth the :20bux: I spent on it.

PCGen is ok if you're broke cause you spend all your money on :420: or whatever. The UI pisses me off though. One thing that's nice about it, is that it has the entire Bestiary in the data files. Hero Lab offers that for another :10bux:.

Oh, thought I'd mention that SORD has been updated for Pathfinder. It's basically a 36 page condensed quick reference rulebook. I don't have it yet, as it only covered the beta up till now, but I'll probably get it sometime. The OP is in need of an update. Suggested changes/additions:

The core books have expanded... we now have the Advanced Player's Guide, The GameMastery Guide, Bestiary 2, and soon to be released Ultimate Magic. Playtests are available for download, one of which is a new base class, the Magus.

The Golarion Campaign guide is out of print and being rereleased with new/edited content next year: Inner Sea World Guide. Also, a Player's guide to the setting is now available: Inner Sea Primer.

A line of fiction books based on the Golarion setting have been added to the product line, Pathfinder Tales.

Herolab is now the only officially licensed character gen software package for Pathfinder. You also now have the privilege of sinking more money into it via addon packs with data sets from just about every book.

D20Pro now supports import from the Hero Lab Bestiary add on. Mindgene is looking at selling prepackaged campaign packs... possibly for Paizo AP modules, which would be pretty awesome.

The Pathfinder wiki at Wikia has been 'abandoned' and everyone has moved to http://www.pathfinderwiki.com/

There is now another Pathfinder podcast at http://www.justiceradio.net/podcast/

I think it's also worth adding Kobold Quarterly as its pretty much the only print magazine that covers Pathfinder stuffs.

Actually in their defense they have a guy who worked on City of Heroes and for some strange reason also on the World of Darkness MMO. :psyduck:

Mark Kalmes seems pretty well qualified to work on this project. He worked on City of Heroes, was a lead coder on City of Villains, and was the coding manager for Champions Online. As for his work on WoD, he left that 2 years ago, so he at least has a history of knowing when something is not going right. If anything, that should show he wouldn't sign on with Paizo if it was simply a pipe dream. He obviously has the experience to put a team together.
