mlmp08 posted:Driving on New Mexico highways: pretty, peaceful, oddly courteous and alert drivers. Same with Arizona and Texas, but the spawns are different. NM used to be incredibly dangerous until the 90s when the governor cracked down on drunk driving, impaired driving, etc. NM had some of the deadliest stretches of roads by absolute number of deaths, not just deaths per mile or per capita. Then NMSHP put up roadblocks and got a reputation for using 10gauge shotguns to perforate engine blocks and the major highways got a lot more courteous. Also the third strike DUI was confiscation of car. That used to be 10th strike. The fact that there was a 10th strike on the DUI chart says something. For aviation content, the "speed limits enforced by aircraft" is more effective when there are fighters and bombers at 200AGL over the highways.

Far west texas gets interesting to me, it's a lot of nothing but you have weird towns like alpine and marfa, big bend, and out by el paso guadalupe mtn, carlsbad caverns, and white sands are all really neat. You just have to get used to everything being 2-3hrs apart.

It's interesting to hear what kind of scenery everyone wants to see while driving. I've been roadtripping all over Finland and my perennial chagrin is that you can't see the forest from the trees. Most of the time the only thing you see are trees. We are supposed to be the Land of the Thousand Lakes but you might not believe it, so seldom do you see any water. You need to go way up north to Ukonjärvi to find a nice lakeside road, but nothing that compares to Pacific Coast Highway. Northern Finland also have some nice spots where you get to drive over some smaller fells and actually get to see some scenery. South of Arctic Circle all you see are trees. I can forgo the trees if I get to see some proper mountains and large water. Iceland and Norwegian coast are wonderful for that.

So speaking of things in deserts, I saw the first episode of that Fallout series. First, that airship is atrocious, way, way too heavy to fly. Second, what kinda aircraft would you use in the fallout universe? I know the Brotherhood of Steel has those Osprey-things, but I was thinking STOL airplanes of various sorts would be what you want. Less maintenance, greater reliability. I mean, if the weather allowed them, I guess blimps would be pretty good, especially if engine reliability was back at a WW1 level---

Only 1 and vegas had any semblance of even internal logic or correlation to eachother, and ever there it was stretched Also the answer should be something looking like an An-2 powered by the fusion power unit from a T-51b.

I guess with the Cybertruck being a thing sold partially (and very stupidly) as the thing for the postapoc wasteland, I was wondering what the aircraft for the same would be. I gotta agree with you on the An-2. Actually I think any aircraft with "agriculture" as its stated use would probably do alright

I mean the NB-36H did exist, and it's comically oversized nature is even perfect for Fallout. Could probably give it rotating wing engines for VTOL use if you really wanted to gimmick it up. Could have it just poo poo out a bunch of power armor guys too in a pinch, wouldn't be realistic, but it'd be very Fallout

I was in Cleveland and got to see the whole thing (second time, actually--I was in Nashville for the last one), but my brother's 4 year old hit her head on the door of the car trunk minutes before it happened so she was wailing the whole time and she now says she hates eclipses. Or did, then my sister in law gave her a banana and everything was right with the world.

Last time I was there the snack bar was still closed. Bring kids out to the 747 and try to go through some checklist games with them flipping switched and stuff going through some imaginary flight, once they get started they can spend way too much time doing that on their own. For me the coolest things are the NASA AD-1, the Boeing Condor and all the weird Hiller aviation designs most of which never entered production. And being a space nerd the Gemini era Astronaut Maneuvering Unit is extra special, it used Hydrogen peroxide, rather than compressed nitrogen so it offered 3x the delta V of the shuttle MMU’s. But the only test in space was called off after Gene Cernan found himself exhausted by just trying to get strapped in.

One of the great things about going there on a Sunday is that the back lot of the museum is right up against the KSQL tarmac, so you can watch the planes coming and going really close. On weekends it gets very busy with general aviation traffic. Whenever the airport is running 12 I make sure to wave at the kids pressed against the fence when I taxi by about 50 feet away. If it's pouring rain though you might be out of luck

Mentour Pilot just dropped a video on the Pakistan Airlines 8303 gear-up crash, which makes a good companion to the Admiral Cloudberg blog post from earlier. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOOKYR5ZJbQ Just some absolutely stupefying negligence and arrogance. One of the time critical ORM skills that I use and teach is "how would this sound in a mishap investigation transcript?" If you find yourself saying things like "what's the worst that could happen" or "I bet they're going to be surprised that we pulled this off", you need to really step back and think about what you're doing. This mishap is a great case study in allowing one relatively small and easily correctible error snowball into total catastrophe.
