orange lime posted:Well, it's still quite possible for a bullet to hit the ring or something and jam the rotation mechanism. Just that a loss of electrical power wouldn't stop it. I saw a documentary once that showed archive film of a B-17 (I think) belly landing with the ball turret still in the down position. Can't remember what had caused the problem but guessing hydraulics since they couldn't get the gear down. Poor guy.

I'm sure the A380 wing (the skin) is made in one piece though (can't seem to find a YT of it but there was one posted on pprune) where the skin thickness varies enormously throughout the length. I imagine if they do decide to repair it will be very complex and extremely expensive.

If you read the book there's quite a good diagram of the flight planning inside the front cover. Not taking anything away from yours mind it's a great piece of work. Also, sometimes a comedian flies through the mach loop:

Biz-jet jockeys too. The airport I live next to has a maintainence facility for Cessnas/Gulfstreams/Lears and the like. It's easy to tell which jets have VIPs on board and which are just ferry flights by how quickly they reach 8000ft. Like rocketships some of them.

Cygni posted:There's something insanely British about both that plane and the fact that the RAF still fly it. In a good way. Sadly they have alreaady started being withdrawn from service and many have been flown to the airfields where they will be scrapped. I once was on a school trip to RAF Finningley which was a Flight Training School. We were in the control tower when a VC-10 took off. The noise, the power! He rotated almost immediately, it was staggering, I was open-mouthed impressed. The ATC guy said 'probably got some saucy young stude in the jumpseat' and raised his eyebrows like it happened every day. It probably did! I hear that the 'Vickers' badges from the control columns often disappear on the way to the scrapyard. Apparently they sell for £600 each!

The sole time we had that beast in here (Doncaster Sheffield) the crowds waiting for it to leave were huge. Unfortunately it was a rare foggy morning and nobody could see poo poo. It's part of the missile launcher that was attached to the belly of one of the airliners, the Boeing serial is a red herring. Probably planted there by Obama a few weeks ago when they found out the site was going to be a mosque.
