Kinda just impulse bought this, any suggestions as to what to do with it? I might just mount it on the roof of my work truck.

I went and collected my ebay purchase, the impulse buy RAF Hunter drop tank, swung by dads work and pop riveted it together for now to work out what I want to do with it. I pop riveted it solely so it cant fit in my van and has to be strapped to the roof for the 200 mile drive home. Construction wise, it wasn't designed with an internal bladder like some drop tanks, originally there was a rubber seal around each join and the tank was filled directly. There and inlet and outlet on the top, a metal 'loop' that attaches to the plane and a locator nipple. Simple electrical connector and a screw filler cap. Not much else too it really. Oh and lots and lots of spiders. Any tips for filling those holes? blambert fucked around with this message at 15:00 on Jun 25, 2010 |

Currently spending the weekend down at my parents house, went past the local pub this afternoon and saw this in the field next to it. Hopped out of the car to have a look and next thing I knew I was sat in the pilots seat having any and every question I've ever had answered by the Pilot and Medic. One of the crew is being sent off to Afghanistan, and this was his last shift before he goes... so they managed to get authorisation for a quick PR *cough* pub lunch landing. It's a beautiful "proper" piece of flying equipment. Overwhelming smell of aviation fuel and oil, knurled knobs and dials, white text on black, not a glass screen in sight. I asked if I could be forgotten about until they were in the air but they declined. . Even the Navy are allowed to forget their chocks. Nav-bag will do fine. They then came back and did this completely unexpected, loving awesome, 60 degree bank curved fly-by at about 80 feet. But alas the camera was already back in my pocket. blambert fucked around with this message at 00:22 on Aug 1, 2010 |

I'm still reading so this might get explained further on. But with a situation as serious as the one this guy is talking through.... why didn't they deploy the emergency slides? Edit: Thought it would. Makes a lot of sense. blambert fucked around with this message at 00:51 on Dec 11, 2010 |

I steward at Goodwood Festival of Speed just for fun, and as part of the job we have to go and maintain closure on various paths to keep a safe ditching zone. The low passes take place over this area, with the Red Arrows & Vulcan doing repeated passes over the weekend insanely close above. I get paid money to stand track side for the car event and near enough directly underneath the airshows. It's better than paying £50 for a ticket. I've never managed to get a video of it (we'd get told off), but it's exactly like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Djd1pPQZ_LE Shivers up my spine just thinking about it.

My girlfriends father works at Filton for Airbus and orchestrates the entire 'wing repair package' when something goes awry. (How, what, when, design repair, assemble team, logistics, 3 2 1 Go.. all in 8 hours) I was there when he got the phone call about that, sat over lunch on his day off. The incident last year where the blades punched a hole through with wing, again, he got sent photos to his phone whilst at lunch with us. (He went white as sheet and had to go outside). I think I might have trouble marrying his daughter. I must be bad luck. blambert fucked around with this message at 01:33 on Jun 22, 2011 |

dayman posted:That is hilarious. Are they taking the ammunition to use? Will it even work after all this time? I know 50 cal's are still very much in use but it seems silly they would be so hard up they're willing to use 70 year old ammunition that's been baking in the desert. According to description the army came to remove the ammo (probably best in some army lockup somewhere instead of random hands, regardless of condition). The rest, sadly, appears to be being stripped for parts. Between the first and second video it's obvious that bits have been removed / damaged. A real shame as a P40 like that in that condition would be worth a poo poo load, in both financial terms to the salvor and in historic terms to a museum. Dare say it could be restored to flying from that condition. But alas, it will now be in 10,000 individual bits in Cairo markets and on eBay. Edit: 1st video here. blambert fucked around with this message at 22:28 on Apr 23, 2012 |
