Work on the ramp can be pretty lame, but I get to see 757s every day. Love seeing them takeoff when they are light.

We just went over how the F/A-18E/F is basically a completely different aircraft from the A-D. Congress wouldn't approve a new airplane for the Navy, so they made their new plane look like the Hornet and called it an upgrade. The thing is as big as an F-14 (though not as heavy) and really only shares the avionics package with the older F/A-18s.

The Rhino (E/F) is big and impressive, but it can't compare in appearance to the original. An F/A-18 with all the stores and pylons removed is beautiful to see.

Saw this guy fly a demo yesterday at Sun-n-Fun. I have seen it before but nothing beats watching the Rhino fly. It is extremely loud and music to my ears.

Anyone ever see an APU give up the ghost? We pushed out a Frontier A319 last year and the APU started to spew flames out all over the grass by the taxiway and caught it all on fire. The ARFF got there pretty quick though.....good thing the station is by that airside.

Had to go to the local FBO Saturday night for a Rutgers charter when the 787 taxied by me on its way to the runway down here in FLL. What an awesome looking plane. The engines are gigantic. It left on a 6 hour test flight over to Texas and back. Very quiet on takeoff. One of the Continental guys told me it's down here for hot and humid testing.

The E190 is a great plane to ride in but it's horrible to work on from the underwing side. The bins are tiny, you destroy your head every time on the fire extinguisher cages and all kinds of other things that make you wonder if they even put any thought into any of it. The Airbus on the other hand, is a dream to work on.

Southwest just likes doing stuff quickly; half the time I fly out of FLL (thankfully not often, Ft. Lauderdale is too far North) they've already started throttling up for takeoff while they're still turning on to the runway.

They do that on the taxiway before they even begin to make the turn. :sun: They also push fast too, one of them in FLL pushed into a CO bird a couple years ago (they pushed at the same time.)

CO....errr UA is installing DirectTV in all the 737's except for the -500s because they will be leaving the fleet soon. I've also read the 757-300 will be getting DirectTV as well. The 777s, 764s and 752s already have AVOD so those will not get it installed (they fly long haul anyways so it wouldn't work.)

From inside the aircraft? There's certainly no doubt when an A320 or A330 APU is running while standing on the ground.

In that vein, the classic 737's APU is louder than all hell. With the NG's they added a silencer and it quieted down the exhaust a ton.

One thing I will say nice for Delta is that all their RJs except the CRJ200s have first class cabins. It doesn't help unless you have a boatload of status with them or are willing to pay, but it goes a long way to making the RJ experience less lovely.

God drat gently caress CRJs. I'd rather fly in a Dash-8 Q or even an ATR.

The CRJ-700 and -900 are fine. The -200 is terrible though. Who thought it would be a good idea to have the window aligned with your knee?

Ah, that would make more sense. There's a small arguement between Intel or LSI (I think) having the "first microcomputer", with the latter's claim being a processor for the F-14.

I don't recall where, but it seems to be IR/HUD footage from a training flight, and in less than 20 seconds, this F-16 goes from graceful flight to tumbling through the sky, you see the pilot punch out and then it hits the ground. IIRC, the cpation/description indicated full power-loss, or loss of flight control as the cause.

I think you may be thinking of the Goshawk that ingested a bird. You clearly hear him punch out and watch as the plane plows into the ground.

My favorite thing about Top Gun is how much they reused that footage in shows and movies, especially JAG. Every shot with an F-14 in it was from Top Gun.
