fknlo posted:Are domestic flights still generally half empty right now? At least for awhile fuel was so cheap it was profitable to fly cargo on passenger jets with no passengers, and air cargo was backing up due to the reduction in flights as well, so plenty of demand. I don’t know if this is still true, but I don’t think it’s a trivial task to reconfigure petroleum distillation plants so I think there’s probably still cheap fuel for now.

Murgos posted:If China actually wants to be taken seriously in space then they need to start playing like an adult and cleaning up their messes when they are done with their toys. If it's just a rocket stage then it has zero chance of making it to the ground.... anyone putting heavy things in orbit does the exact same thing, the only exception was the space shuttle.

Imagined posted:China owns most of our debt, a shitton of nuclear weapons, all the factories making all the stuff we need, and a lot of the raw materials for what little we still make here. They also have several key US allies within easy bomber range of their borders. They have us by balls, they know it, we know it, and we aren't doing poo poo to them. what exactly do you think they could do by holding our debt? china: pay us now usa: no that could certainly impact the "credit rating" of the usa, but it's not like we have no international sway. if we did it for dumbass reasons that's a thing, but if they dropped a satellite on Manhattan or caused a big diplomatic incident, we also have that stick to play. neither side wins in such a situation, especially since we have been making payments for years and years and that cash flow helps China significantly. everyone knows they manipulate their currency value, they need USD as much as we need liquidity.

our eyes are not far enough apart to be any good at distance estimates beyond a few hundred feet or something. it was a big issue with naval warfare before range finders were invented.

https://www.planetary.org/articles/3390 Our radio signals have only traveled a very very very small distance within our own galaxy, and even as such, they would be very weak and distorted. It's very unlikely they've been noticed. Without FTL travel, it's so unlikely that we have been visited that it's reasonable to be extremely skeptical of any claim otherwise.

I recall that Voyager 1 transmits at 22 watts and is nearly 20 billion km away, so how weak is the signal here? — Robert https://public.nrao.edu/ask/how-strong-is-the-signal-from-the-voyager-1-spacecraft-when-it-reaches-earth/ it takes an absolutely massive amount of energy to transmit clear signals over very large distances.... our AM radio signals aren't gonna cut it.
