Ola posted:It makes perfect sense when you play a flight sim or whatever, but in the animation the F-8 just does a quick aileron roll about its own axis and the viewer is none the wiser. Yeah I had no clue since I have no idea about flight dynamics, so the show was very entertaining to me. I've loved the F4 Phantom since I was a kid, and to actually "see" it in "action" made me loving giddy.

Humbug Scoolbus posted:I was stationed at Bragg when this happened... Oh god, this makes me sick to my stomach. I worked with C130's in the AF and have been in a few "assault landings" exactly like that. My rear end in a top hat puckered every time the pilot made the steep plunge and it felt like we were going to crash each time.

orange lime posted:It was my dream to own one of these things, because it seemed like the perfect 2-seater jet. Small engines, straight wings, 2 tandem seats, carries all kinds of stuff under the wings in pods. Then I learned that the engines make a constant shrieking noise that's probably second only to the Thunderscreech in terms of sheer ability to infuriate. Yes they are very loud. I used to camp at a campground that was near a Guard base that had them flying around all the time. I thought they were awesome, I wonder if anyone is still flying them around. [edit] now that I think about it, they where nowhere near the infuriating sound that the A6 was, I hated those things. Applebees Appetizer fucked around with this message at 04:48 on Mar 17, 2010 |

I'm somewhat of an aviation fan, and since I was a kid I've always loved fighter planes and jets. One of my all time favorites is the F4U Corsair. Just browsing youtube I found this great little video about the history of the Corsair so I thought I'd post it here. I learned a lot about the plane and have even more respect for it now, such an awesome aircraft. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Au6rD-BdY5w

BobHoward posted:So, the Arrow had become an extremely expensive, state-of-the-art white elephant. It was never going to see high volume production. As unpopular as the decision was in , I think you can make a solid argument that cancellation was correct. Canada wasn't alone: around the same time, the US cancelled its own high performance interceptor, the XF-108. It wasn't nearly as far along in its development as the CF-105 (nothing but a mockup was ever built), but on paper it would've been an even more capable interceptor. It, too, was already obsolete. Oh I completely agree, it was smart to cancel it, I just have a thing for delta wing jets and never knew about that one. The F-106 and Saab Vigen are my favorites, but the Arrow is definitely on the list now

Oh I love the Draken too, I just love the Viggen dual (canard?) delta wing . The F-106 is my favorite "classic" delta. The Hustler was pretty rad too.

BobHoward posted:If you like delta wings with sections at different angles, look up the one I mentioned which was never actually built, the XF-108. It looked pretty cool. I did! I actually remember seeing pictures of that as a kid but had forgotten about it, shame it was never produced. Also read that other article you linked about them trying to bring back the Arrow over the F35.....
