I don't get why it's cool to like Rush's early 80s stuff but when I tell people I love 90125 they look at me like a madman :(

The only Yes stuff I've really listened to is that, Close to the Edge, and Fragile (all of which I got on vinyl for like a dollar each), plus a few tracks from The Yes Album. This last page has got me thinking I should really investigate the rest of their catalogue.

man, i did not realize that genesis's period after they'd moved away from prog but before they actually became a pop band is... really good? i've never been able to get into their peter gabriel-era stuff (which i feel bad about because i like his solo work), and just always figured i wouldn't really like anything after that. but duke and abacab are the exact type of pop-prog that i love

they have a live album from this period called three sides live that i've listened to a few times now. did not think 2020 would be the year i got into genesis but here i am i guess!!

dim brain: the height of 80s pop-prog is rush's moving pictures
lit brain: the height of 80s pop-prog is yes's 90125
galaxy brain: the height of 80s pop-prog is the duke suite

i'm glad i got into genesis last year. turns out that while their late 80s stuff is a bit too poppy for me, and their peter gabriel stuff is fun but a bit Too Much for me, duke/abacab/self-titled genesis is exactly what i want from prog

Abacab is drat masterpiece. I love when the bass comes in almost 2:30 minutes into this track.

i gotta give abacab a few more spins. i do love this live version of dodo/lurker, a song with an ending that sequences one of the most dogshit keyboard solos ive ever heard in prog rock directly into like the best vocal phil collins ever put to tape

here's a fun question for this thread:

what would you say is the most epic, powerful vocal ever to deliver the absolute dumbest concept in prog music? like, the pinnacle of both axes: an absolutely astonishing performance of an incredibly loving stupid concept

for my money: genesis's dodo/lurker has a climax that i'd say is my favorite phil collins vocal of all time, in service of... delivering a riddle that might be about a submarine, but according to the band is probably about nothing.
