A two-part question regarding King Crimson, now that a lot of their stuff is on iTunes and a bit more easily acquired.

First, how is their music over the last 20-odd years? I grew up listening to my dad's vinyl copies of basically everything they did up through Three of a Perfect Pair, having practically destroyed the Frame by Frame CD set through 25+ years of overuse, and Red is one of my favorite albums. I've noticed a lot of people speaking highly of their stuff since the mid-90's, and that video someone posted of FraKctured seemed really interesting. Are there any albums or mixes that I should really look into (Or try and avoid) of their more recent stuff?

Second, where would one start with their live stuff? I'm a huge fan of live albums, but with King Crimson all I've heard is a handful of odds and ends on YouTube, the fourth disc of Frame by Frame, and my dad's original vinyl of Earthbound. I'd be particularly interested in anything from the Red and Discipline eras, as well as anything that's just generally regarded as having either great sound quality or great performance.

Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual.

It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums.

Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock.

Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word *artist*.

Someone dropped the ball on the Boston gig then. It’s the worst place to see a show inside city limits that’s not Fenway park or the hockey rink at BU. A big open outdoor tent next to a road and a wharf. On the plus side there are (lovely) tickets going for about $30 on Ticketmaster right now. Must be scalper tickets left over from the first run. I can’t imagine there are any venues bigger than this in Boston that they could reasonably fill. It’s 5,000 seat capacity. Theaters are in the 1000-2000 range, after that you’re getting into hockey rink territory.

I’ve also seen them in the best place (acoustically, but probably for sight lines too) in Boston, the theater at Emerson college, which was a really fun show. But I’ve also seen them at theaters and rock clubs, which were also really fun shows. King Crimson shows are great.

The situation for the South Florida shows isn't much better. They're going from a solid venue that had like 4000~ seats to one that I think is going to be less than 2000 on a flat lawn. The regular tickets aren't going to transfer over, since Ticketmaster is still considering the original event as just "postponed" so I have no idea when I'll actually get refunded for it, which is a bummer but thankfully not a huge hit considering I bought them in March 2020 just before everything went sideways. As much as I'd love to see them, an outdoor show in July isn't exactly appealing, never mind the further increased travel distance and whatnot, so unless the tickets are stupid cheap or I'm able to snag insanely good seats, I'll probably pass.

Extremely unlikely at this point. I already contacted both Ticketmaster and the new venue and they’re both saying pretty clearly so far that my tickets won’t transfer over. If they were going to, you’d think they’d have worked that out before the new show or sale date for tickets were announced (Presale for it is tomorrow, general sale Friday) or that it’d be mentioned literally anywhere. They’re being treated as completely separate shows.

Just to provide an ending to this, I predictably got an email today, 24 hours after the various pre-sales for the new show started and less than 24 hours before the general sale starts, that "your event has been cancelled" and I'll get a refund for my tickets originally purchased just before COVID became a thing last year.

Genesis releasing a boxset of live stuff.

quote:

Tony Banks curated 53-track 5-CD set containing previously unreleased Genesis recordings for the BBC, 1970-1998.

Genesis ‘BBC Broadcasts’ is an extensive collection of broadcast material from one of the biggest selling recording artists of all time and one of Britain’s most internationally renowned bands. Curated by founder member Tony Banks and the group’s long-time engineer and producer Nick Davis, it is available as a 53-track 5-CD set and 24-track triple LP.

These collections represent the cream of the group’s work recorded by the BBC between 1970 and 1998, and it includes contributions from all three of the group’s vocalists, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins and Ray Wilson. With notes by author Michael Hann, and packaged with a 40–page booklet, ‘BBC Broadcasts’ contains favourites such as ‘Home By The Sea’, ‘Mama’, ‘Duchess’, ‘Carpet Crawlers’, ‘No Son Of Mine’ ‘Turn It On Again’ and many more.

With only a handful of these tracks previously officially available, Genesis ‘BBC Broadcasts’ acts as both a collector’s cornucopia and an alternative “greatest hits”. Stretching from the very beginnings of the band’s career via appearances on ‘Night Ride’ and John Peel, the set encompasses both of the group’s Knebworth performances (78 and 92) as well as their much–loved 1980 show at London’s Lyceum, and triumphant sell–out run of shows at Wembley in 1987.

Rounded out by material from the NEC in 1998 and Paris Theatre and Nightride sessions from the early 70s, as well as the much sought–after encore version of ‘Watcher Of The Skies’ at Wembley Empire Pool in 1975, Genesis ‘BBC Broadcasts’ is a veritable treasure trove.

Genesis are one of the world’s biggest selling and most successful bands of all time. They have sold an estimated 100 million albums and have played to sold–out stadiums and arenas all over the world for decades, most recently with their global sold–out Last Domino? Tour which concluded with a three–night run at London’s O2 Arena on 22 March 2022.

The evolution of Genesis is unique, their sound developed and progressed throughout their career and with multiple line–up alterations in the early years, the classic line–up of Tony Banks, Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford took shape in 1976.
