I expect it to be interesting but not necessarily good.
this would be a big step up from their last decade and a half of material, which is neither good nor interesting

something that occurred to me the other day is how Dream Theater were lambasted into the mid-2000s for their music just being pastiches of recent bands, while the problem is really that their fanbase was too young to recognize the previous decade of pastiches of stuff that came out before they got into Dream Theater

Huh, I missed that somehow. They had a pretty good lineup, apparently.
Hadn't heard of this either, but I can hardly imagine a better James LaBrie stand-in than Ross Jennings, the guy has the dynamics of a pipe organ

Bummer, I didn't realize he was that old. I had a passing conversation with him about Frank Zappa outside a random Long Island bar and didn't realize who I was talking to until years later

Someone needs to put together a supercut of Steven Wilson trying to windmill headbang

Karfagen dropped a new album last month (okay, yeah, I think it's his fifth in 18 months or so) and it's quite good, if Focus-type symphonic prog is your thing

Leading the first couple minutes of the album with an Inca Roads knockoff is certainly a choice

also I want to recommend this:

to me it sounds like Van Halen playing Rush - it totally kicks rear end. very proggy but also so all-over-the-place you almost can't classify it.
This is so undeniably Norwegian. Really big Rumble in Rhodos feel to the vocal production, too.

Yeah it’s almost unlistenable. But Mk 2 Marillion wrote a few catchy songs. They’re a pretty good pop prog band.
a lot of parallels to late-nineties Anathema here

Roine Stolt and Nad Sylvan have a project called Agents of Mercy that's usually my go-to recommendation for people looking for 21st century stuff inspired by old Genesis

The first one is well-written but by-the-numbers stuff like this

Their last album (2011) got a little bit more adventurous

I know Queensryche is basically a tribute band nowadays, but I'm still surprised I paid $35 a pop for tickets tonight. I think I paid more in 2003 when they toured with Dream Theater
