As far as prog-metal, I don't think I saw anyone mention Watchtower. Originally I brushed them off as overly-wanky poo poo, but they are fantastic.

I used to see Watchtower live in Texas back in the 80's. Ron Jarzombek was an amazing player....but I could never get over their lack of melody in the vocal lines. It was all to angular and "screamy".
I like my prog metal with a bit of melody like Dream Theater, Shadow Gallery or Ayreon. Melody and harmony is god.

Speaking of which, how many consider Queen to be prog? If you don't know side "Black" from Queen 2, let me introduce you:

March of the Black Queen

Ogre Battle

That was some amazing poo poo for 1974

Here's love for Kansas - Fine American Prog

I'd put Magnum Opus up with there the best of any other prog bands offerings

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW21tcSdvhU

plus, these guys actually did the "rock" part of progressive rock back in the 70's

If all you know is "Dust in the wind" or "Carry on my wayward son" then you're missing out big time :)

I have to also sound a note of discord with all this Neal Morse love. I loved the stuff he did with Spock's Beard up to the album "Snow" where I think he just phoned it in. After he became a Born-Again Christian and left Spock's Beard so he could form his own Christian prog label, he just got really really creepy to me. That and some of his lyrics are like really clichéd and ridiculous to me... and I like Yes.

I have a lot of admiration for anyone who has faith enough in some message, though it will alienate a portion of his audience and says it anyway. That takes balls. Prog artists barely make money selling that kind of music as it is (small audiences, downloading recordings illegally, etc), so you could say he's "putting his money where his mouth is"..or heart is, as it were...good on him, regardless of the message.

Anyway...Give Sola Scriptura a try. Musically, it's pretty fantastic regardless of any religious prejudices the listener may have. I think it's a bit heavier than the things I've heard from him in the past, by a large margin.

But the cardinal sin, as far as I'm concerned, is that none of the vocal lines are memorable; they seem to be added as afterthoughts because you need vocals, and where they're present, they're never the centerpiece of anything that's happening. This is what killed a lot of bands that could have been really great -- Deadsoul Tribe, Rishloo, and Farmakon are great examples. Start with a memorable melody and work from there, or all the great chord progressions in the world won't help you win a repeat listener.

Man, that's the best advice I've seen posted on these forums in a long time regarding song writing. Vocal lines/melodies are priority one.

e. to make this a little more constructive...

Escape Velocity had better vocal lines than Pale Fire (IMO) and this is due to the magic trick that a lot of people never seem to get the hang of. Interval jumps in the vocal melodies. Wide interval jumps almost always make a melody more memorable (4th, 5th, 6th and especialy 7th's). I'll also applaud you for not tuning down to low C or B or what ever the flavor of the year drop tuning is...grats on that.

One last thing, if you have the tracks - double the vocal lines. It'll do wonders for making a weaker singer sound like a stronger singer.

Hey guys,

You may remember a few months back I posted some of my bands demos and got some great feedback. Just wanted to give you an update. We re-recorded some of the parts using some of the criticism you guys provided, and had our stuff mixed by Thaddeus Corea (son of the legendary Chick Corea). Here is the product of that process:

http://soundcloud.com/metamusique/escape-velocity

But the best news is this: we submitted it to Prog Rock Magazine, and they are going to include it on an unsigned artists compilation CD to be handed out the first annual Progressive Music Awards, and included in a special edition of the magazine itself covering the awards show.

Your input was really helpful and was definitely a factor in getting our track in shape to be submitted. Thanks goons!

hey man, this is really drat good. Well done

Holy poo poo this album is amazing. The title track is staggeringly, crushingly beautiful.

Super excited about Wilson doing something where the guitar work is better than average. That's the only thing about PT's stuff that has always turned me off....boring as hell guitar solo's.

I'm just trying to think of the coked out executive that's like "you gotta bring the marketing power and cultural legacy of a band that hasn't had a top album in like eight years, you owe it to people"

And I hate most of 90125 and all of Big Generator, but I really really dislike neo-prog anyways so :shobon:

I always considered this song fairly progressive, in that they'd never done anything like it before.

Kansas has always been my favorite prog rock band (emphasis on ROCK ). If all you know from Kansas is what you've heard on the radio, maybe this is your chance to discover what they were really capable of?

I'm stoked for this!

Ok, so the Kansas Miracles out of Nowhere Blu Ray is really loving great, particularly the bonus dvd with all the Mixes that Jeff Glixman does on the fly. Criminally underrated Prog.

Kerry Livgren is a genius. Truth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dumOc5V_PcE

I'm trying to think of all the prog bands that use, or have used, flute.

Jethro Tull
Genesis
King Crimson (on the first album, at least)
Camel

I have a sneaking suspicion that Moody Blues and/or Soft Machine have as well, but I can't prove it.

Shadow Gallery used flute.
