Thanks to the WHT vps deals forum, I got a new vps from 2host.
512 ram guarenteed, burstable to 1 gig
5 tb of bandwidth, on a gigabit line

On a i7 I think. Threw CentOS 5.5 on it, and I'm pretty drat happy for like 95 dollars for the year prepaid.
This is insanely cheap compared to what I pay at linode -- ignoring server specs, you're paying $0.0015/GB. Are these low-end companies legit? (i.e., should I trust my sites to them?)

I'm in the market for a cheap US server to do supplemental file hosting for a site I run. Minimum specs would be:
  • 10GB+ storage space
  • 1TB+ bandwidth
  • good bandwidth
And that's it. The server doesn't have to be fast or even very reliable, as permanent storage will be elsewhere. I don't expect disk io to be a concern.

What should I expect to pay, and anyone have host recommendations? Can I get this for close to $50?

The slightly longer story is that my site currently runs across a few Linode VMs and uses S3 for storage. I'm happy with them, but my bandwidth costs keep going up and I'd like to pay less than $.10-$.15 / GB. I salivate at the bandwidth rates that 100tb.com offers, but $200/mo for 100TB is way overkill.

http://www.quickweb.co.nz/ has good VPSes.
I'm on one of their OpenVZ plans: http://quickweb.co.nz/vps-linux-plans
(VZ1, got it at an absurd discount of something like $65/year)
Paid monthly, for $15 you get 20GB of space and 2TB of bandwidth on a 1gbps port. Discounts for paying in advance.

They're generally high rated and very popular at LowEndBox. (I can't decide if that's a back-handed compliment or not.)

I'm only using mine for very minor file hosting (<150GB/mo), though, so do research.
Alternatively, just read WebHostingTalk.
Thanks, this is exactly what I want for much less than I expected!

Linode made a huge announcement today. They're making some absolutely insane upgrades right now. Apparently, they're gonna be posting a series of blog posts over the next few days describing the upgrades. http://blog.linode.com/2013/03/07/linode-nextgen-the-network/ is today's. Highlights:

  • Across the board 10-fold bandwidth cap increases. I have a Linode 512 with 200gb of bandwidth. I now have 2tb of bandwidth.
  • Everyone gets a 5x increase in outbound speed. Speeds increased from 50Mbit/s to 250Mbit/s.

They're rolling out more updates over the next few days, so I'm excited to see what they offer. Gotta love Linode!

Good news, and I'm happy to pay a bit more for a VPS I can trust. I just wish linode came with more ram..1GB for $40 can get tight.

Apparently Linode RAM will be doubling, and I am pretty stoked: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5398150
