I like to open up Renoise and make the Amen go brrrrr. Production is hard.
Someone told me since I have no experience programming rhythm I should work in another genre first but I wanna make the Amen go brrrr.

It starts rather innocently enough, with you discovering the Amen and Think breaks, and loading them up into your sampler of choice. "These will make great backing breaks, some synthetic Kicks and Snares over top of them will make a beefy two-step."

And then you discover syncopation, and start writing hemiola rhythms over your two-step. Then every song is a hemiola rhythm, and you've figured out how to process the Kicks and Snares in the breaks themselves so they slap and you no longer need to layer 909 sounds over them. Then you start making Drumfunk, and forget how to use synthesizers to write basslines.

Then you discover pitch automation, and polyrhythms, and you start writing melodies made entirely of 1/64th note Amen snares.

I am currently backtracking to modtrackers because the chip tracker (Furnace :argh:) I was using has a bug. WTF Commodore. Amiga is fuckin weird as poo poo. 2 channels for left, 2 channels for right are you joking my rear end?! Even the Gameboy could pan.
Sorry for this weird derail. I hope someone else at least got some value out of those two Youtubes I posted.
I spent a long time dismissing drum and bass because of it's repetitive to my ear drum style but I think it's just like modern (liquid?) DnB that forgot the kick drums.
Have this blown out track I found on Bandcamp with The Duke samples on it https://lowentropy.bandcamp.com/track/anarchize-3

Yeah; lots of those deep, emotional, pop vocal sample tunes coming out now in the style of Dawn Wall/A.I./Integral Records

re:breakcore

I searched utube for "breakcore mix" and it's all zoomer & anime aesthetic takes on DnB, I had no idea it changed so much (got usurped?) {also not hating I kinda liked some if it}

I also thought there would be a oldschool breakbeat hardcore revival sound

The whole Resonance V (matter of fact, the whole series of them) is killer. The Tsuruda remix of Asteroids is really banging if you like dubstep/140, makes me kind of want to venture back out there again to find more stuff like it (in a sea of cookie-cutter quarter-note chainsaw wobbles, Tsuruda is at least a unique producer). Billain also posted something on his Insta about the Stigma remix that straddles the line of pretension so well I can't tell whether it's satire or he just really takes his art this seriously.

Holy lmao, that Insta post is wild. IDK if they're being serious or not but either way this paragraph is hilarious:

Mods please: The Something Awful Forums > The Finer Arts > No Music Discussion > Drum & Bass: Big Groove Decisions.

Also they mentioned in that Insta post one of their previous tracks Third Impact which I quite enjoyed. If you're a fan of D&B and/or Neon Genesis Evangelion you'll probably get a kick outta it:

Dubstep is adjacent enough to D&B to share here, right?

OPERATIONS vol. 28 (Dubstep, Drum & Bass mix)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nad_P_mfFRU

For some reason, OPS vol. 25 has seen a major uptick in views over the past month, which is odd considering I haven't really done any promotion or shared it around. I wonder if my channel has 'tipped' and is actually getting into recommended searches on YouTube. In any case, that was a dubstep mix, so I decided to put together another dubstep mix. Managed to squeeze in some classics and old favourites, and of course it takes a bit of a turn into drum & bass.

these first few are right up my alley, first 1/4 of this mix real nice n deep. A quick move to hypey stuff but it wasn't jarring. I like the tempo changes; esp with the style/sonicality of tunes it works well. Thank you!

Can anyone think of any tracks that switch from Two-Step to Hemiola rhythms?

I shouldn't have to explain what a two-step rhythm is. But you might be less familiar with the term 'hemiola'. It's basically when a measure has three strong beats in the time typically occupied by two. Some folks call it the 'steppa' rhythm, but I'm a bit of a music theory nerd and 'hemiola' is the correct term. Tunes like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sLHwuW8Tjc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKTj4wfbEC4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_Bwp5ZHp0k

It's mostly popular in Jungle, with Amen/Think breaks chopped into it, but it's common in Techstep as well. There are other types of hemiola; the Reggaeton rhythm is called a 'tresillo' which is a type of hemiola (and also popular in Jungle and Dancehall), but that particular 'Kick-Snare-Snare' hemiola is popular in D&B and has a few different syncopated variations.

For the purposes of the next OPS mix I'm working on, I'm looking for tunes that switch from one to the other, doesn't matter which way. This mix is fire already, I'm planning to sit on it until 4/20 because it's almost entirely very heady, verdant Jungle.

Thanks!
