In short, Hospital is the premier liquid funk (lighter style) dnb label. They also have a few sub-labels such as Med School and M*A*S*H. Other labels you might want to check out would be Breakbeat Science, RAM Records, and Metalheadz just to name a few.

Breakbeat Science is probably finished as a label, but if someone is looking for good CDs and singles from the past, yeah, I would seek out the BBS stuff. Used CD shops might be a good place to score the CDs.

A mention of Soul:R and V Recordings (they are slowly putting out new releases) would be good for the lighter fare.

Maybe a nod to the resurgence of minimal, namely the latest output on Critical Recordings and some of the stuff on Shogun Audio (which I have always viewed as a culmination of several sub-genres), and specifically artists like Rockwell, Sabre, some of Alix Perez's material, Icicle, Code 3 (e.g. Jubei, SP:MC and Danzou), hell, most of the stuff on Exit Recordings lately.

Also, I am a Commercial Suicide fan, great label to check out regularly. Almost at their 50th release, and I think Subtitles Recordings is up to about release 75.

Sub Focus - Last Jungle
(off Sub Focus' self-titled album)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFdyfUgy9Cc

These two I would probably pull, for these reasons:

• Pendulum - "Fasten Your Seatbelts" is a breakbeat tune (kind of tearout breaks, at that), tempo is about 132 BPM and not in the usual range of drum'n'bass (usually around 170 to 175 BPM, although the mid to late 0's stuff was sometimes in the 165 to 169 range, and earlier then that, it was 150 to 160).

• Sub Focus - "Last Jungle" is like a throwback, retro tune, runs around 145 BPM. It has the feel and sound of old jungle, which has seen a little resurgence in the past year. A few other recent examples of this include:

– Skream's "Burning Up" (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qi-4Fd187bs) on Digital Soundboy

– Cluekid's "The Sound" (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btRBJ6M0JVI) on Aquatic Labs

– Goth Trad's remix of Skream & Cluekid's "Sandsnake" (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJrLsr5aJys) on Disfigured Dubs

All of those artists are generally associated with dubstep, but they are exploring outside of the stereotypical definition of dubstep, in my opinion. And I am sure there are ton of artists doing this, that I am not even aware of.

I feel like I'm getting back in to form with DJing. I guess the main thing with this little mix (which a few friends are asking I make in to a full mix) versus the radio show sets is that I just wing it on the shows, where as this mix I worked out what I want to play and work out the mixes a bit before recording.

And what would you categorize Pendulum's "non" d'n'b songs as? Someone said breakbeat, but I'm not altogether convinced on that, yet.

"Fasten Your Seatbelts" and "Out Here" on their first album are definitely breakbeat tunes. As for the non-dnb stuff on 'In Silico', I have no idea, I actually haven't heard that album. Last tune of theirs I bought was "Axle Grinder".

As for similar artists, not sure how close you'll get to what they do, but maybe check out the other big acts like Sub Focus, Chase & Status, or maybe check out artists on labels like Technique Recordings (link: https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/label/detail/3419/technique_recordings), Viper Recordings (link: https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/label/detail/1757/viper_recordings), Breakbeat Kaos (they released the first Pendulum LP, link: https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/label/detail/913/breakbeat_kaos).

If it's mainly the drum'n'bass + guitars hybrid that you liked, then check out the artist Night Breed on Ram Records (link: https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/track/catalog/?contextType=artists&contextName=Night%20Breed&contextEntityId=3403), or some metal cross over tunes like Concord Dawn's "Raining Blood" (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2nHKpalCh4) or KC's "Archangel" (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqBcsTx8Qws) and "Destroyed" (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uG7rja3rrZA). DC's second run of the name is wrapping up in a week or so, but the guys that ran it are going to continue doing a dnb/dubstep night at the same venue, same consistancy, just a different name. The main Konkrete was hitting them up for dues (something like $100 a month to use the name), and the guys in DC were doing the party as a free event for over the past year.

There is a Konkrete Jungle Baltimore too, but those line-ups look fairly different from the DC ones, and different people are running that.

This is one of the things that I'd struggle with, working with soundsystems regularly. You guys seem to have to put in a lot more work than would otherwise be necessary just because of the arcane decision to hold off on AC supplies and then sticking at 110v. I'm lucky to find a 32 amp feed in a venue here at the best of times, but at least when I do I can hang double the amount of boxes off of it than I could over the pond.

Drum and bass and dubstep pretty much demand a system that makes it hard to breathe and your vision blurred, and I'd hate to have to lug in extra cabinets and amps just to achieve that effect because doing a load in, partying and then loading out is already a killer.

If you make it over the states and come down to DC, I'll take you to U Hall. It's what I wish all the sound systems in this city were like.

Club 24 is a mess, probably a front and the owner just wants money coming through. The process to get the proper power rating to the building is supposedly minimal amount of work. The one show I played there, the promoter paid for a bunch of extra sound, friend of mine was running one of those systems and just complained about what a waste it was to bring in the gear they did.

I played opening week, back in March, didn't get a note, but I know two goons that were there (NeverGirls and 2beans). I was hanging out in the booth the night Nadastrom & Tittsworth played though, and I think someone passed one of them a note during their set, but I didn't see it.

I haven't been seeking out too many gigs lately, but I just got added to the Starscape line-up, and I'm playing a 4th of July party that 3D Productions is throwing.

I don't wanna get too spergy about soundsystems but they are a crucial part of drum and bass for me. We're quite fortunate here that the majority of events around the UK understand this and hire in walls of bass bins (mine included) to make a night something special.

If you're there anytime soon and fancy prodding the soundboy to find out what they use I'd like to know just for speaker geek purposes!

I've always been envious of UK (and EU in general) systems, most US stuff seems to be made for bands and not much thought in to dance music.

The guys who did U Hall's system are old members of Telemetrik, when it was a crew rather than just Marcio's production alias, and their company is called ITI Audio Inc. I can put you in touch if you want, Billy and Adam are good dudes. They have a site too: http://www.itiaudio.com/. I'm pretty sure the system uses Martin Audio speakers, and MRK1 gave the system major props the night I played with him.

And first song played on the system was "Inner City Life", although they have not had a dnb night yet, but I know of at least two planned and if I can get my finances to a point where I can set aside some money to throw events again, I might start doing some stuff occasionally.

As a DJ, though, I don't care if it's a white label or official release. I want the tunes, not the art/notes.

I like having vinyl if it is the full art version, but I haven't bought any in over a year. Been trying to sell off a lot of promo copies of vinyl too, although there are certain releases that I would re-buy if I could find the full release version.

Pretty much any release that I liked that was designed by Jon Black / Magnet Design (lots of old Metalheadz and Ram releases, also did the early Test releases and I think maybe the first few Virus & Metro releases). Also, all of the Violence releases (Jon Black did a lot of these, I think the other main designers were Dean/DJG [dubstep producer] and a guy in Los Angeles), and Commercial Suicide releases.

Last minute switcheroo for this event:

Word is, Ed Rush's wife had a baby on Friday, so he can't make the gig. I guess Marcus Intalex was in the states already, and I think they are all with the same booking agent in the U.S. Looking forward to the set.

Weee that was a good set, and to think I nearly missed this. I was born a loving decade too late :(

I only caught part of Marcus Intalex before I had to get going. How was the whole thing? Did you catch my set, it was kind of early (10 to 11).

How was ground zero, hell, where is ground zero? I've been told that it is fly venue, did you like playing it?

I played at Ultrabar, in DC. Ground Zero is a warehouse space in Baltimore that a few guys live in. I've been there once, three & a half years ago, and it was "rave" in the truest sense of the word: Ground Zero was the second & third floors of the warehouse, but they broke the lock to the first floor and set up shop, had like 500+ people in that room.

Bassy house. I don't want to come across as harsh, but there's nothing d&b/halfstep etc about either of those tracks. :)

Yeah, Anae hit it.

When I kept hearing the term "drumstep", I was thinking stuff like Amit's album on Commercial Suicide. Still fast tempo BPM, but more space between the songs elements, and drum patterns that were three kicks and then a snare, for the main hits.

Also, some early Moving Fusion on Ram had this style to it, but didn't pick up. Actually, I think one of the Ram Trilogy tunes on the second or third EP they did.

Nice haul! The DJ Die remix of "The Planet Plan" was a sleeper, always loved it. What did you get off of Salvage and Dune? I still remember when Double A & Twist from Dune used to live in DC.

All for 5-3$ Zion's Gate in Seattle is the best place to buy.

My old roommate was 1/3rd of RDS, he's got some new stuff coming out under the SGNL moniker.

And I got to check out Zion's Gate a few summers ago, but unfortunately I had family with me and didn't get to really dig through their crates :(

Keep me updated cause RDS is so loving good.

That sucks about Zions Gate. Really its the hours spent digging through records that you find some amazing things.

I mentioned earlier in the thread about Evan from RDS, he's going by Hybris now, just had a single on Critical's new Modulations label, and his newer stuff is getting support from Alix Perez, Rockwell, Sabre, Bailey and a few other big names. He's got a couple other things lined up.

Bryan/SGNL has been working on a lot of different stuff, a lot of non-dnb, but a couple Autonomic-type of things at 170. He's got an album coming out on Spherix's new label.

Didn't really know D-Struct, he only lived in DC for a few months, but from what Bryan has said, he's up in Seattle and I've seen a few recent releases with his name on OnSet Audio.

I was listening to Jenna G - "Work It Out" today and although she isn't my cup of tea when it comes to DnB, I want to ask you guys something.

Here's the video, skip to 2:40 because this is what bothers me. At 2:40 another song comes in and it's absolutely awesome. I must get more.

Can anyone please tell me what the gently caress is this and is there more of this style or maybe even a full song?

It's a weird request, I know, but I would really appreciate any input.

Figured it out, sounded familiar, the tip was the artists (Die & Clipz):
