Corrupt Souls feat. Ransom - "Broadcast" on the second Corrupt Souls EP. The track was just me and Marcio/Telemetrik, but it was released as a Corrput Souls tune for various reasons. I also have a collab on the Sinthetix compilation, tune called "Breach" I did with them and UFO! from S.F. That one was mainly Rob F putting a bunch of our crazy ideas and random samples together. I had a couple other things with UFO!, Telemetrik and MRN (Matt Nordstrom), but we never finalized releases on any of it, or just didn't finish it. That Corrupt Souls tune "Samsara" was based on a big vocal sample that I gave Marcio, to possibly work on a tune, but he churned "Samsara" out in like two days. Also, my old roommate releases as SGNL, and he used to be in Robot Death Squad with Hybris. Played around in the studio with them too, but nothing ever finished.

Last night I finally got the chance to play 'Crystalline' by Hybris and Noisia in a club. It got a reload. Heavy stuff.

This is a really interesting song. I assume a lot won't like it - the intro is accoustic and the vocals aren't the most masculine by any means. But it's really a pretty neat d&b song in my opinion.

The flipside, BLVD, is loads better.

Excellent production, melody, and is really really heavy out in the clubs. Can't wait to play it out.

Still one of my go-to tunes, as is the flip.

This is a tough five for me, I had a whole huge post typed up about what five albums got me in to dnb, but that was 1996. Here we are 15 years later, I guess I would recommend more recent stuff that touched on a lot of different styles:

  • Break - 'Resistance' LP (Symmetry Records)

Big dance floor tunes IMO, heavy production values, lots of processing throughout all the tunes (basically the sounds are not stock, Break has mutated them in his customary way), plus some interesting collaborations with artists he likes to work with. Catchy little vocal hooks, and bass & basslines that drive hard. A good follow up to his first album, 'Symmetry'.

  • various artists - 'Andy C: Nightlife 5' (Ram Records)

The digital format offers the one, two combo of both the mix (so people hear the hype & flow of an Andy C mix), and the individual tracks (a good mix of different tunes that are mainly dance floor, but some are more techy, some more bouncey, and a little deepness). I think this compilation might do this a little better than the Hospital or Critical Music comps, but those labels both put out some really good, varied comps that give exposure to both some newer artists and some more established ones.

  • various artists - 'Commix's Fabriclive 44' (Fabric)

A fantastic mix that goes in deep while still being very accessible and melodic. Perfect progression and amazing tune choice - ideal as a starting point for slightly more unusual d&b.

  • Commix - 'Call to Mind' LP (Metalheadz)

I don't want to come across as being too much of a Commix fanboy, but this album is honestly the perfect way to say 'hey, drum & bass can be like this too!' without the first-time listener thinking 'where's all the music gone?'. Contains a couple of all-time classics (notably 'Be True'). One of those albums where I think 'ah, this is my favourite song on the album!...Oh no wait, THIS one is!...wait, no, it's this one...' every time I listen through.

  • Blu Mar Ten - 'Natural History' (Blu Mar Ten)

Amazing album, Blu Mar Ten are some of my unsung heroes of d&b - they've been around since the 90s GLR days, consistently releasing fantastic music: usually melodic and beautiful (like the majority of their most recent album, Natural History) but they aren't averse to some proper grit and dirt every now and then. For bonus points, this album has just been re-released with a bunch of remixes thrown in (some of which are REALLY good: there was a remix competition for 'Believe Me', hence the enormous list of versions).

You picked two that I was gonna pick, so I'm just gonna edit your post since it's formatted way nicer than I would have done. Yeah I'm lazy.

Nu:Tone's new album, Words And Pictures, is out. If you enjoy mediocre Hospital pop fodder combined with generic dnb sensibilities then it's the album for you. Just as an example here's System VIP (which happens to be one of the better tracks on the album).

Not a personal attack on you, but I'm tired of people labeling anything released on Hospital, or anything with a vocal for that matter, as 'sell-out', 'mainstream' etc. It's closed-minded in a very sad way. Nu:tone is an excellent producer, and as soon as it was announced that his album would have vocals on every track, I knew that people would label it as 'cheese' because that's the automatic reaction for a d&b head. And this is speaking as someone whose favourite producers are Rockwell, dBridge, Icicle etc.

The thing is, mainstream dnb is cheesy to a degree, because if it wasn't then it wouldn't sell (gone are the days of Timeless and New Forms). Put another way, I can't stand the artists you mentioned simply because they make pure dnb for the "heads". It's not closed-mindedness as much as the fact that that's how it is.

Hospital are a business first, a dnb label second.

I'm confused. You don't like 'mediocore Hospital pop fodder', but you have the Hospital logo as your avatar, and you also don't like 'pure dnb for the "heads"'. I'm lost.

Not to attack you either, but the same thoughts were running through my mind. I am not really into the "pure dnb" stuff. Perhaps in time, but I'm still young into dnb. God forbid a label try to put out music that people want to listen to that aren't into the pure stuff.

I don't know a whole lot about record sales and all that jazz - not claiming to. But I will say that I know very few drum and bass artists probably make a comfortable living. I also have no doubt that 90% of these artists are just fine with it - they do it for the music. But to say somebody "sold out" just to make a living doing what they love - producing music - is kind of a bunch of poo poo. The most wealthy dnb artist doesn't come close to the most poor pop/hip hop artist on the radio today.

As for the album itself, I picked it up today and am pretty impressed so far with my first listen through. I am unfamiliar with Nu:Tone, but i have heard a couple of his songs on UKF and whatnot. The Feeling in particular is a pretty great track. JB posted it earlier and mistakenly labeled it as "System VIP." Definitely worth a listen.

Just checking you didn't misunderstand me...I pretty much agree with everything you said. It just saddens me that most people who are as into d&b as I am tend to be very closed-minded about anything remotely accessible. As a dj, it's a fantastic feeling playing experimental/unusual stuff to a crowd of heads and having them COMPLETELY get it and love it, but it's also fantastic playing accessible stuff to a crowd of people who know nothing about the music but what they do know is that it's making them dance a lot.

Anyways, so my Friday 5 this week is SUB FOCUS. I promise that my 5 won't be everybody's favorite, but they are up towards the top of the list in my book. Sub Focus is an awesome producer because he doesn't limit himself to straight DNB. He has a very large mix of dnb, dubstep, and house/electro elements thrown in. Without further ado...

(these are in no particular order)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1htoGl9QXK8
"Ghosts 'n' Stuff (Sub Focus Remix)" - Deadmau5 ft. Rob Swire
Deadmau5 is one of my favorite DJs outside of drum and bass. Ghosts n stuff stands as one of my favorite tracks by him, and I love Rob Swire's vocals (though I know a lot of you hate them) so this was a logical choice for me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoZFnkchtv0
"Could This Be Real" - Sub Focus
This is one of my favorites. It's a little more up-beat dubstep with some house elements thrown in. There is a drum and bass remix that he made for the song that is pretty good too, but the original is my favorite.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NI2b7qXUlnE
"Hold On (Sub Focus Remix)" - Rusko ft. Amber Coffman
This track is a really great one. Drumstep at its absolute best. I'm pretty sure this remix got bigger than the original song - it's just that good.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdJgwf-_HGY
"Rock It" - Sub Focus
Possibly Sub Focus's biggest and most popular track today, with good reason. I am pretty sure it's the first Sub Focus song i ever heard, and is still one of my favorites.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3QfMQE5cg0
"Move Higher" - Sub Focus
I'm not even sure what genre you would classify this - probably some subgenre of house. But for some reason it's my favorite track on Sub Focus's album. This is just a personal favorite - not sure what others care to think of it.

You missed out some real classics :( Swamp Thing? X-Ray? Timewarp (and the VIP)? Swamp Thing especially is absolutely incredible.

Photek top 5:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DIesf-xgz0
"Knitevision" - One of the biggest percussive basslines ever. I love the way it sneaks in during the intro, and then slams in with full force once the perfect Photek drums come back in. It's impossible to understand how monstrous this is without hearing it on a big club system.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykALcAUWM-E&feature=related
"Mine to Give ft. Robert Owens" - Photek doing his house thing. Pure grooving deep house with classic-sounding vocals and a lovely warm catchy bass riff. This was a pretty big underground house hit back in the day, as I understand it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggeu5vhbueo
"Ni Ten Ichi Ryu" - The ultimate example of those 'perfect Photek drums' I mentioned before. Possibly his most well-known tune. The Teebee remix is a very rare example of a remix of a classic that is just as good as the original: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjW4SwjiQlk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwG_aj8iWoQ
"UFO" - Unsettling vocal samples, razor-sharp percussion, fantastic progression - this track builds atmosphere as an art form.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-SrE6iTuIM
"101" - My favourite track off his new EP. Unparalleled use of samples and atmosphere. This could be an amazing soundtrack to so many things.

Five Matrix Tunes From His Transition Period Between the Virus Sound and the Viper Sound

Matrix & Danny J - Vertigo (2003/4)
Matrix & Danny J - Telepathy (2004)
Nightbreed - Pack Of Wolves (Matrix Remix) (2004)
Nu:Tone - Seven Years (Matrix Remix) (2005)
Matrix & Sonic - Flashlight (2006)

Essentially these are tunes in between his original sound that some love and others hate, and his new sound that some love and others hate. No prizes for guessing which way I swing, it's also the reason the tunes are picked are kinda biased towards the mid-2000s.

Yeah, that's me, had a pretty hectic few days. Here we go though!

New-school RAM Recordings!

Mostly avoiding the obvious tracks that everyone knows, no point putting them down here. Chase and Status - Take Me Away, Sub Focus - Timewarp etc etc. You should definitely check them out IF you haven't heard them before. In fact it's pretty much legally required.

Sub Focus - Swamp Thing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luvBUrbSyFc
There's two stages to this track - that INSTANTLY recognisable lead hook coming into the mix, and then the UURRRGHHHHHH of the bass switchup. A perfect track - I can't think of anything you could do to this that would improve it. Pure fire in a rave. Destructive simplicity, one of Sub's best tracks ever and woefully unknown to people just getting into the scene. Certified classic.

Lomax - Artisan VIP
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASrHWEJBfl0
Killer sample, killer break, and above all the MOST killer of all killer basslines. This tune destroys crowds so hard Andy C had to sign it somehow even though the original came out on a whole different label. This will blow you away on a system.

Noisia - Deception
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-Crczi0IX4
Sheer energy in this one. Fantastic buildup, signature Noisia impeccable production, then aggressive-as-gently caress bass stabs when all hell breaks loose and it drops.

Culture Shock & Furlonge - Surprise
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrRDn97E3tQ
This was actually the B-side to Bad Red, which was the bigger tune on release, but I believe this is actually better (and it seems to have stood the test of time better with DJs). I honestly believe Culture Shock is one of the absolute best producers in d&b today, and this track showcases his unbelievable ability to to absolutely nail production - notice how 'spacious' but tight the whole track sounds. Big hands-in-the-air buildup, funky bassline, great melodies and synths, he got it spot-on with this one. See also: Culture Shock - Footloose (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgfxLeld_yA)

Ram Trilogy - Lunar Bass (Commix VIP)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Tn1Bv7MjIo
It's kind of hard to describe tracks like this. Clean break, perfect rolling bassline with an ENORMOUS sub-bass. I love this track to bits, you just can't go wrong with it. Great change-up in the bassline after a while too, to keep things interesting.

Also, I'm going to post a few of my favourite d&b tracks that are floating about at the moment, and I want you to tell me what (if anything) you don't like about them (seriously, I'm interested). If that's ok!

Of course we all know the final straw was when Benny Ill was on after Peverelist(who has never been a favourite of mine). Everyone was up doing their thing when Peverelist was on. Now Benny Ill comes on and half the crowd just split. To me those were the folk who just didn't get it. Don't understand the groove. And this was after Benny's first track was Stone Cold. How the gently caress can you ditch the dancefloor after hearing the first like bar of that track and know it's coming on!? Man I was shocked I tell ya! Some people!

Not even this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tH-1P8N3__0

Also, can you reply to the rest of my post? :)

Edit: gently caress me that Stone Cold track is good. I'm going to have to hunt that down.

(Yes yes I know Hospital/Med School are rubbish etc.)

Last month Med School signed a new producer, "Lung": http://www.medschoolmusic.com/lung-signs-to-med-school/. Apparently he's been producing since 2008 and recently his track "Relapse" was featured on "New Blood 011". I had a quick listen to Relapse and thought it was pretty bland and boring. I think it is amusing that Lung is producing stuff like this when Noisia, BSE and Calyx are listed as "favourites" on his Med School page: http://www.medschoolmusic.com/artists/lung/.

Disagree, I really like Relapse. Also this Kryptic Minds remix of one of his tunes is fantastic:

1. "I <3 U So (Skream's Made Zdar Feel Like He Was 20 Again Remix)" - Cassius. I just really liked the somewhat old school feel of this one.

Hate to be that guy, but this isn't a d&b track. It is however a loving amazing tune so everyone should listen to it anyway.
