Skimming this thread but gently caress, you goons have a good taste in drum and bass. It's been a few years since I was following it.

This thread has inspired me, I need to get one of my decks fixed because it conked out on me.

I was seriously expecting a load of student union poo poo in here, bravo. This has motivated me to make a mix for the first time in about 5 years.

I realise every music nerd must groan about this but I have to say that I think out of all the genres youtube completely castrates drum and bass (or at least the stuff I like).

I was trying to get together some tunes I wanted to share and it was depressing. Nothing sounds worse than a dillinja track via youtube (just try it).

I'm going to stick to posting the mixes.

The simple reason for this is because dnb used to be purely about, funnily enough, the drums and the bass. Nowadays mainstream dnb simply isn't - there's a drumloop there to dictate the tempo, and you'll get the odd wobble, but the focal point of the tunes is the melody. It's why you'll hear derisory comments about it being too much like house and trance.

I've heard it referred to as drum and 'mid range'.

In the mid 90's d&b was a really exciting genre, people into it at the time were convinced it was going to be incredible. It progressed so much over that decade then ground to a halt around the 00 mark.

Nothing over the last 10 years has innovated, just re hashing the same formulas. I think some creative spark was syphoned off into dub step and other things.

I still love drum and bass, but I think it could have been so much more. The most interesting tunes are from the mid 90's on reinforced and metalheadz.

With that vacuum, in comes the new wave of generally middle class white kids who weren't cool or clued in enough to get on the bus before it took off. D&B started to speed up some more and in doing that it take out a lot of the soul, energy and attitude - possibly because these new kids who made it never had much of those qualities in the first place. And no I don't count making as big a racket as you can energy or attitude. Making every sound massive and 'filthy' and wobbley or whatever is loving lowest common denominator poo poo, it's a piss easy way to get it going without actually needing to put effort into it. It's the microwave meal of the musical world. Sure it's quick but it tastes poo poo and is very unhealthy for you compared to making it up yourself with some nice fresh ingredients. I mean all that's fine I guess but shouldn't there be something more? Shouldn't you be pushing things? Shouldn't you be making an effort? Or at least trying to.

What year/s and artists are you actually referring too here?

This is a pretty sobering thread because I realise all the music I remember now is "classic" (gently caress :emo:) (it will happen to you one day day kids :corsair:).

It's cool that you are writing your memories of the scene in detail, back then but I remember it far differently than you describe.

It wasn't class based what so ever in my opinion (ed rush + optical/trace = middle class??), it was to do with techno.

It was still at the time when people were experimenting with different styles of music at that speed (165 +) it was such an exciting time.

Without getting all misty eyed and :corsair: "back in my day" it was really a golden period to be involved in the UK music scene. These days it's all "ironic 70/80's" guitar music (oh god I should shut up now :corsair:).

Ok I've used the corsair smiley enough, I realise I'm becoming 'that guy'. I'll make a longer post this evening about d&b in the mid -late 90's tonight.
