Does anyone here like the darker, less liquid side of dnb? I mean, I can listen to Hospital mixes all day, but what really gets me going is stuff like Ohm Resistance/Obliterati -- you know, the crazy skullfucking tracks.

For instance, Temulent - "Mahalito" was the first dnb tune I ever heard, and it was at that moment I went, "Oh poo poo yes, I need more of this in my life":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oboxZlmWQw
I later played it for another dnb neophyte, and he described it as, "the song I'd want to be playing before murdering someone." Which is...a little harsh, honestly, but whatever. Temulent and Submerged have some far more brutal tracks. I think all three versions of "Suicide Hotline" are on Beatport now if you want to hear something intense.

Am having trouble finding a streamable copy online, but Todd Buckler's "Chi/Early Morning Blues" is a good 12". I dunno if it came out on more than promos, but I think Buckler did do an LP later on that has both tracks. Temulent later did the "Chi Reshape" remix, which does some shifty things with the drum breaks that consistently blow my mind.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6N292IsxCo

Also, looks like Silent Killer just released a followup to Everyone Bleeds:
http://soundcloud.com/silentkiller/...m_term=20101011
I wasn't a huge fan of his first album, but it has some epic atmospheric moments and is great long-night-road-trip music.

For anyone still interested in dnb for newbs, the girl who got me hooked on dnb loaned me DJ Dara's "History of Our World" parts 1 and 2. I don't know how hard it is to find, and I don't even know if I have any copies anymore. I hope I do, because it's a pretty good overview of pre-dnb ragga, jungle, hardcore, and breaks stuff before things really went all out. The BMPs are lower (I think she has one pre-2000s mix CD called "Speed Limit 145" that's marketed to be WOAH, FAST), and the bass has a very different timbre (more big, hollow sine wave sounds, less wobble), but it's great music and it gives you a good idea of how drum n bass evolved.

...which isn't to say I'm only hot for the aggressive stuff. I love a good vocal track, especially someone remixes La Roux into dnb or dubstep -- the first time I'd been to a club in ages, the DJ played out Nero's remix of "I'm Not Your Toy," and I thought my spine was gonna melt. So good.

Any Ohm Resistance fans out there? Submerged is back in action. Got a free mix on ye olde SoundCloud from late 2016

You Will Choose Fire is his new band, featuring yours truly on guitar, vocals, and co-production. We've got some hype music coming out this year, and I'm hoping to get some dark, twisted, mid 00s dnb released in the next couple of months.

Submerged and I released a track from our band. It's abrasive breakcore/code/darkstep/skullstep, hovering around 200 BPM, and goes hard on the anti-fascism theme. Got on a terrestrial French radio show last week, which was pretty intense for me as a performance n00b

https://youwillchoosefire.bandcamp.com/releases

Gonna have a whole EP of that sort of thing out this spring, except less with the movie samples and more with actual vocals and song structures. Ohm Resistance, coming back to life in 2017 -- gonna be a banger of a year, at least where music is concerned. The new Medium album, Evolution of the Universe (42M OHM) is due out 2/17, by the way.

If you like dark, hard, and scary music, check out Ohm Resistance and its sister label Obliterati

Fair warning, I went from being the label's biggest fan to working for it, so I'm biased as hell. That said, Temulent and Submerged were the first dnb producers I ever listened to, and they're the guys who got me hooked on listening to, producing, and DJing jungle. I had no idea what drum n bass was at the time, but I came from a trip-hop, pop, and punk background previously.

We were dabbling in some adjacent genres, and Submerged and I are in a drum n bass/pop/shoegaze band together, but lately we've been working on more "Dirty Bomb"-era tunes.

Here's some of my personal favorites. Gonna link to Youtube cuz I don't want this to look like I'm trying to sell poo poo. If you do feel like buying, the website is currently down, but all the digital tunes are on Bandcamp and the usual places. If anyone wants anything on vinyl, PM me and I'll figure out if it's in stock. The last Submerged vs Bill Laswell release is on grey and red splatter vinyl and it looks spectacular.

Impulse and Submerged - Dirty Bomb
Accela and Plejik - Mental Collapse
Silent Killer - Amber
Submerged - Servant (Technical Itch Remix) (Kurt and I play a sick version of this live as You Will Choose Fire)
Temulent - Chi Reshape (remix of a Todd Buckler/Buchler tune; Judson found him and released a killer new remix on his Nervosa label last year)

I go by DirtRoadJunglist because I used to live in the middle of nowhere, so all my dnb listening happened while driving in the forests. If you can find it, the DJ Rawkiss mix from Knowledge Mag is a banger. Arguably my favorite of all time, and a frequent soundtrack for my drives.

Subduction Audio did a sick set of CD mixes by local artists last year. If you make it to any of their shows in Portland, they still have copies. I saw Pendulum in early 2009 with the full live band and that was loving amazing. It wasn't this show exactly, but it was around the time this DVD came out:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2YiJ13MRUE
(Although in hindsight, that was probably more of a hybrid rock/metal/punk/drum n bass show that you aren't likely to see anywhere else rather than a strictly DNB show.)

Who was their drummer at that point? KJ Sawka played with us at the Ohm Resistance Showcase last December, but that doesn't look like him. Of course, the editing is so insane I'm not sure I can tell who anyone is on that stage. Sawka's a beast -- if you can catch him live, do so! He does drumming with samples for his solo shows, and drums for Pendulum and I think a few other dnb/EDM acts.

Check out The Blood of Heroes, featuring Submerged, end.user, Justin Broadrick (Godflesh etc), Dr. Israel, Bill Laswell, and a rotating cast of other musicians. It's heavy, grimy poo poo, definitely not the sort of thing you'll see played in an orchestra room with everyone sitting down.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=channel?UCSfYfr5DFIOMgGTi75PKVTw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwPNWcfQyQE

Gator Bait Ten is more prog metal dnb, I guess. It's great music, IMO, but not everyone's cuppa.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjZVOMHypas

Method of Defiance is Bill Laswell's supergroup of sorts, also with a rotating cast that's included Submerged in the past.

Ohm Resistance likes live acts. We like drum n bass. We like it even better when they're put together!

Submerged and I have a live dnb/shoegaze band called You Will Choose Fire, but our first album is far more shoegaze breakcore than anything. The new poo poo we've been working on is more dnb, because both of us got fed up with not having enough dnb in our lives. At some point, Kurt may move from bass to keyboards/controllers for live shows, with me still providing guitar and vocals, but we'll see. Our live rig has been punk rock since we've mostly been playing local gigs in Portland, OR, but he's used to much bigger, more elaborate setups with previous bands, so it's just a matter of us being less lazy.

I still have In Silico on heavy rotation. Surprised I hadn't discovered that album earlier in life; it's like exactly what I wanted out of electronic music when I was younger - reese basses mixed with riff-driven rock & roll. I'm sure they're great live but any videos I've ever seen of them (except for like two years ago at Ultra, I guess) has looked a bit boring. Rob plays that weird MIDI guitar with no stage presence at all, and what's going on with KJ's drums? On the Reading video he's got virtually no cymbals, like someone forgot to turn the overhead mics on.

Are there other bands out there that do the In Silico buttrock/D&B sound well? I know Enter Shikari and Hadouken sort of do, but honestly I don't really care for their sound.

I dunno, but when my band played with KJ, he had a full drum kit, and by that I mean we had an entire Pathfinder full of just his poo poo with only room to add two guitar cases one passenger. He also spends a lot of time lovingly tuning everything before warming up. :3: I dunno what his Pendulum rig looks like, tho, and he's got all those electronic triggers and poo poo in all the solo videos of him, so...YMMV?

Krewella kind of seem to be reaching for a Pendulum sound thru EDM. Sometimes Concord Dawn hit the spot, too.
