I'm a big fan of the more "liquid" stuff but there doesn't seem to enough out there for my liking (otherwise I might consider that as a new genre to DJ). If anyone else here uses themixingbowl.org, there's a great user mix on there that still has seeds (CCM - 1st the Worst). I guess this guy really likes Lenzman; I do too. Quite a few years ago I saw LTJ Bukem and Makoto along with this diva MC, that was pretty fun.

Oh can anyone explains what VIP means in this context? I see that after quite a few dnb tracks, but I don't think it refers to an artist.

Atlantic Connection & Lynx - Dangerzone
Lenzman - Fade Away
S.P.Y - Elite Squad
Random Movement - Cant Resist (S.P.Y Remix)
Lenzman - Bittersweet
Lenzman - Bittersweet Part 2
Lenzman - Rags To Riches
Big Bud - Diggit
Lil'London - Good For Your Health (ATP Remix)
Undersound - The Extra Mile
Robot Redford - Dying Star
Big Bud - Want You So Bad
Lenzman - Lose You (VIP)
Bonobo - The Keeper (Redeyes Remix)
BCee - Diagnosis Murderer
Mutt - Conversations
Calibre - Rockafella
ATP - Be Mine
Calibre - All You Got
Makoto - And I love Her

It can mean "variation in production" or it's a special version of the track for VIP's. Special in that it might have a vocal specific for that DJ (old "Super Sharp Shooter" VIPs that spelled out the DJs name), or only a few people will ever have it (like Hive's other version of "Mass Hysteria" that only he and the Bad Company guys seemed to have).

Thanks - any particular reason this terminology is only used in dnb?

Also, did anyone else see London Elektricity just came out with a new album on Hospital? I noticed it on beatport.

I'm kind of interested in trying a dnb mix at some point. Right now I do house-ish stuff around 125 bpm and I do pretty well at it (though I'm not great or anything). How much of learning curve should I expect switching from 4/4 to a breakbeat and ending up in the 170-180 bpm range? I also noticed the tracks are shorter on average compared to 4/4 stuff, which would make mixing a bit more difficult in that regard as well.

I'm mainly interested in the liquid stuff, so I'm also looking for what kind of labels really stand out for that sound. The ones I can think of so far are:

Hospital
Shogun Audio
Spearhead
Toolroom

I've always liked the lighter d and b stuff but I'm more a fan of instrumentals than stuff that is more vocal, and I really like stuff that has a jazz influence. Was looking at making a mix and am interested in some suggestions for specific artists and labels that I may have missed. The ones I've liked so far:

Logistics
Calibre
Lenzman
Alix Perez
Toez
Nu:Tone
Voyager
Utah Jazz

labels:

Hospital
Shogun
Spearhead
Signature
Chillax Trax

I like some jungle too, though most of what I've found is harder than I like.

Give Fred V & Grafix a try. Their new album is more commercial than their older singles but I still liked it. Give One of These Days a try, it has vocals but from what you've said it sounds like you would enjoy it.

Or just listen to this mix with a lot of their older songs because its loving incredible. Still my favorite liquid mix to date. The way they mix the songs together is awesome, it sounds like they were meant to be played in a mix.

Thanks. That stuff is okay, a little more energetic than what I'm looking for though.

A few tracks (well, samples of tracks) I'll probably get that might give you a better idea -

Okay so I made a mix. I've been doing mixes for a while but this is my first DnB one. I thought it would be tougher because of the higher BPM, but it really wasn't. I think it came out pretty well, outside of a bit of static I can't seem to remove during one track (around 14 minutes, if anyone knows how let me know), and a bit of a flub leading into Four Tet. Anyway check it out!

One8 - Flowing
Radias - All 4 You
MSDOS - Funk by Funk
Carter - I'll Fly Away
Radias - Let it Roll
Radias - Streetwise
Calibre - Miraculous
Calibre - Keep Control
Four Tet - Angel Echoes (Logistics remix)
Semaphore - Out of My Hands

I listened to lot of progressive and tribal house at that time, when it was big, and then the progressive and nu-skool breaks kind of came out of nowhere. I definitely recommend Bedrock Breaks by DJ Hyper, I still listen to it pretty often even now. I really liked the Australian breaks stuff like Luke Chable and Phil K. The breaks disc from Phil K's balance 004 is pretty solid. I went to a three hour Phil K / Dave Seaman tag team in like 2003 and it was dope as hell

I am looking for help on an ID. It was definitely either a late 90s or early 2000s track, some of the lyrics were as follows (to the best of my knowledge)

and in an an-cient civ-i-li-zation
that we built to (??)
...

everyone's (??) is in their heart

...

but the (??) gonna wait (?? sounds like "afro's" lol)

...

(chorus?) here i'm..... com-in'

...

sorry that's probably terrible but that's all I remember. Definitely a bit more on the chill side as opposed to the darker side, and a ton of lyrics in a male voice

breakbeat seems ok to post here, here's a couple mixes from when progressive breaks was big in like 2003-2005. for the second one it's just the first part, the shiloh segment. For mix cds dj hyper bedrock breaks is really solid, first cd is more prog/chill, second is more on the nuskool side

I have no idea what happened to any of these guys: luke chable, fretwell, shiloh, digital witchcraft, habersham and numinous, phil k (exception, he sadly passed away from cancer two years ago).
