Their essential mix is one of the first I got into and it's still great, even today. http://www.breaksblog.biz/pendulum-essential-mix-180905/ Also, every Dieselboy mix will cure that "hard and dirty" itch. Check out 6ixth Session, The Dungeonmaster's Guide, and Substance D. Some people scoff at BUYING actual DJ mixes, but Dieselboy's are definitely worth owning.

One of the promoters around here is having a DJ competition and whoever gets the most "votes" gets a headlining spot at a local festival. The catch is that the competition will be in the lounge during dubstep/dub-techno show with Cyberoptix and DJ Shiva. I'm hoping to rope in a few undecideds by dropping a dubstep track or two at the end.

They may represent 98% of the visibility to some of you, but there are much deeper drum breaks and beats that are represented by the spectrum of dnb than what you will hear on a Pendulum album.

I know Pendulum is the big thing in DNB right now, but you guys should probably make a thread for their new album. Before anyone gets uppity, I actually own a few 12" of Pendulum (Vault/Ulterior Motive/Spiral and Back 2 You/Fade to Grey). I even played Salt in the Wounds at a gig last Friday. I can recognize that they fit the category of dnb, but you guys are taking over this new thread. Every time I check this thread because I think people are commenting on dnb, it's another comment about the new album. chrix fucked around with this message at 21:41 on May 17, 2010 |

I don't understand why people still try to sub-sub-subgenrelize dnb, a genre of dance music that is so wide and varied. Especially given the direction DnB has gone in the last 2-3 years. Sure there are differences between a Camo & Krooked track as opposed to an EZ Rollers track compared to a Dillinja track, but each producer doesn't sit down and think: "Hmmm, I think I'm going to make a strictly Techstep track". They create tracks by taking elements from all kinds of different tracks. Hell, sometimes a single producer will have his tracks sorted based on the SAMPLE they use. It's silly to watch people try to compartmentalize DnB based on what they've been exposed to. People STILL fight about what's considered Jungle or what qualifies as Liquid Funk. It's dumb.

Auspex posted:Nah I've never been to a specifically jungle night before but I've seen a few jungle sets here and there. I always enjoy them a lot but the music is just from before my time I guess. If you're clued up about jungle please educate me! Jungle doesn't really exist anymore since it was more of an era instead of a specific sound. Sure, ragga jungle still exists, but it's such a niche audience and it's evolved quite a bit from the pure jungle roots. For example: Jungle - Deep Blue - Helicopter Tune https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMPhr20XPTo Ragga Jungle - Krinjah - Bam Bam (Remix) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YBcjBQLnZE The biggest difference between these tunes is about 30 bpm. Obviously by listening you can hear the same kind of off-beat breaks used (to varied degrees; ragga jungle tends to borderline ridiculous). Both tracks are considered "Jungle" but not because they sound the sound alike, it's because they use many of the elements (broken, chopped up breaks and drum patterns). Subgenres like Techstep/Neurofunk/Liquid/Jump-up are building blocks for producers instead of strict blueprints.

They are DEFINITELY different cliques, there's the crowd that likes the dark growling dnb while there's the liquid puritans who demand the deepest cuts with the oldest soul samples. I guess my point is that the genres are blurring and you can't really peg an artist with one subgenre. S.P.Y. is a great example. He's gone downhill since High Society (TGDD did have a couple good tracks, but the release was "meh" to me). Not saying I don't play his tracks out, they're just not as creative as they used to be. With the way hospital-style dnb is moving, I feel like HC might make everyone take a collective step backward because guys like Netsky are bringing a completely new sound to the table and HC may have hit a creative brick wall. example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=203FfH4ODPM vs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXiiq0dvMu4 I know I'm probably in the minority, but TGDD just had an extra layer of cheese that didn't click with me.

(That could have something to do with me mostly buying singles, though) I think there's definitely a gap between being a casual listener of dnb and someone who grabs up releases as soon as they hit digital distributors. I can definitely understand the want for an actual CD pressing with cover art, liner notes. As a DJ, though, I don't care if it's a white label or official release. I already have the entire Mechabyte series (awesome), and the essential mixes from Pendulum, High Contrast, and DJ Hype. Thanks in advance. Podcasts: Autonomic Podcast This one's on the minimal side of dnb. It's more of the "thinking man's" version of dnb. Really crisp sounds and can get you vibing nicely. No chatter, it's all mixing. Hospital Reocrds Podcast Easily my favorite podcast. I usually listen to every single one and I haven't found one I didn't enjoy. There's a bit of chatter, but sometimes that's ok. It's a lot of fun and they always play great tunes. Hosted by London Elektricity himself, who is head of Hospital Records. DnBArena Podcast This one is very similar to the Hospital Podcast, but they don't focus on one single label as much as diversifying the track selection to the whole spectrum of DnB. Still very good, hosted by a semi-famous MC, The Risky. They usually have guest mixes, so check the listings to find your favorite artists. Shogun Audio Podcast (link is on the main page) I've just recently started to get into this one, but so far, I've been impressed. This one's similar to the Hospital Podcast because a lot of what they play is released on Shogun or by an artist with releases on Shogun, but still very, very worth while. Hosted by a LEGEND in Dnb and Head of Shogun Audio, DJ Friction.
