So i'm totally new to Drum n Bass as a genre. I discovered Pendulum a few weeks ago and loved them, as i look for bands that cross Rock and electronic music a lot.

The thing is that I really like some songs I hear, and at the same time, can't stand some of them. Right now the only bands I actively listen to are Pendulum (except Hold Your Color. Need to give that one a second try.) and The Qemists. I guess i'm kind of a fan of the rock/drum n bass fusion.

I figured I would hit this thread up and see if there were any other bands that mixed the 2 genres very well. Some awesome stuff posted in this thread here and there though already. Thanks!

You should look into Spor, The Upbeats, and The Qemists.

Also, Hold Your Colour is easily Pendulum's best and most creative album to date. Give it another shot.

Monday BUMP

Some new (well, new to me) stuff I picked up this week:

Felon - Frame Shift
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHRJC3ByRro
(sounds WAAAAY better when it's not a youtube video. Go pick this up, Felon is a goddamn bassline writing genius)

Arp XP & Maurs - Do Your Own Thing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7A_XDcdx0hA

I have to show some love to a local Indianapolis guy who is really blowing up the dnb scene right now, Dave Owen. He just released an EP, Beatin Up the Block on the local Indianapolis label, iQ entertainment. It's REALLY good. I dropped "This 1" (Ft. Johnny Utah) this weekend during a dnb/bassline/garage set I did and the entire place went nuts. Definitely worth checking out. It's so new there aren't any youtube vids yet, but here's a few goodies from Dave that showcase his sound:

Must be a wild hair, but I'm really digging a lot of the minimal dnb that I'm coming across lately. Especially Triad. After this mix was finished, I grabbed some :420:, turned up the massive subwoofer and listened to Triad's basslines for the next 30 minutes. It's just so deep. I've been playing Fiasco out like a madman.

LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad are coming to Houston next month, are they worth seeing for ~$20? I'm still a DnB noob, more into the dubstep side of things, and while his name seems familiar I don't recall where I've heard it.

LTJ is a legend in the dnb scene, up there with Goldie, Grooverider/Fabio, & Roni Size. He runs the Good Looking record label which has many amazing tunes on it. His production is very cerebral and has been classified as "Intelligent Drum & Bass".

His Essential Mix is worth checking out, although he probably plays much newer tracks these days. For a better idea of the kind of tunes he'll likely be playing, take a listen to his FabricLive 46 set.

That said, if I had the opportunity to go, I would in a heartbeat.

This isn't my first post in here about Netsky's album, but I think it's a pretty important release. In my opinion, it's the most cohesive DNB album since albums like Era Of Diversion and Tough Guys Don't Dance came out a couple years ago. The synth lines in each song are so memorable. And I think everyone who enjoys this kind of sound should be listening.

Ok, I understand you're a BIG fan of Netsky's album but I really have to disagree with the statement I've bolded. There have been many other "more cohesive" albums released recently that maybe you haven't had any exposure to:

Mutt - Treading Water

Break - Symmetry

Logistics - Crash Bang Wallop!

Chase & Status - More than Alot

State of Mind - Faster than Light

Camo & Krooked - Above & Beyond

Telemetrik - My Lightyear

The Upbeats - Big Skeleton

Bachelors of Science - Warehouse Dayz (one of my personal favorites)

Breakage - Foundation

Lynx & Kemo - The Raw Truth

Sub Focus - Sub Focus

The Qemists - Spirit in the System

Alaska - The Mesozoic Era (totally under-rated drumfunk album)

Fanu - Homefree

Noisia - Split The Atom

The Panacea - The Chiropteran

Implex & Enei - Sublife

Mistabishi - Drop

Calibre - Shelflife Vol. 2

Blu Mar Ten - Natural History

ASC - The Astral Traveler

Counterstrike - Insubordination

Alix Perez - 1984

How many of these albums (or artists) have you listened to?

I've listened to a lot of those (Sub Focus, Noisia, Chase & Status, Mistabishi, The Upbeats, Calibre, etc.), and I think they're all great albums. But I'm not embellishing one bit when I say that almost every single tune from Netsky's album gets stuck in my head on a regular basis. I frequently catch myself whistling them. The rest of those albums have a few tracks like that, but not almost every track on the album.

Sub Focus' album came very close to doing that for me, but Netsky's just goes all the way with it. That may be just me, though. That's why I made sure to say "in my opinion" before that statement.

Well, based on this response, the only albums you have listened to are the popular ones. I'm not trying to tell you what to listen to and I'm not saying the Netsky album is bad, but I think you're missing what I am trying to say. The Netsky album is very catchy, but to call it "the most cohesive" album is a bit presumptuous without a larger sample size. That's like saying the latest Ke$ha album is great because it's catchy. No one's going to listen to it in 2 years, so enjoy it while it's popular, I guess.

I won't deny that I play a few Netsky tracks in my gigs and on my radio show, but an entire set of that over-produced unoriginal synth will turn the average listener away. Netsky's best tunes aren't even on his album. Hell, they're not even on the same label. Drum & Bass does actually exist outside of RAM and Hospital Records, you know.

Edit: Monkey, I think you and I clash a lot because you're the opposite of a true dnb listener. This isn't a bad thing, but coming from a DJ who has been neck deep in dnb for quite some time, you have a very "pop" taste in dnb. No hate bro :respek::cool:

I know, I know. I've heard his non-album tracks and think they're loving awesome. Not saying that those labels are the only drum and bass out there, just saying that their stuff is usually what I find myself most attracted to.

And honestly, I still get excited every time I listen to albums like Tough Guys Don't Dance and Era Of Diversion. So I think I probably will enjoy listening to Netsky's self-titled a few years down the road. Ke$ha is just flavor-of-the-week pop poo poo, and I doubt she'll have much staying power (at least I hope she doesn't). Netsky's self-titled is just one of those albums that sticks with me, and probably still will in a few years.

We're all good, chrix :glomp: Just on different ends of the DNB spectrum. Not a bad thing.

When I first got into dnb, I listened to Pendulum's Hold Your Colour pretty often. While I'd love to say "it stuck with me" there are maybe 2 tracks from that album I'd listen to myself, let alone submit others to. You'd probably be pretty interested in a lot of the dnb I started with as a wee DJ, but I hardly play any of it anymore.

edit: this is the last mix I made on vinyl. It's not perfect, but it might be up your alley: http://www.mixcloud.com/djhollowpoint/escape/

I got confused trying to watch his actual physical mixing, but then I realised you meant look at the Serato screen, and yeah, it makes no sense. For example his transition from System to Ill Behaviour - the transition happens with only one Serato track playing. So both System and Ill Behaviour were on that one MP3, evidently. This would be excusable if it was a mash-up, but it's not, it's a (fairly rubbish) mix. He then mixes into another Serato track at 6:24 (notice the top one stop moving) but it continues to be Ill Behaviour, with his next tune pre-mixed in (listen to the drums).

Secondly, watch the bit from 2:14 to 3:00. The track he mixes out of the Let You Go remix (I don't recognise it) drops when it's clearly on the same Serato deck as Let You Go (the top one) - if you watch the waveforms, the waveform on the deck it 'should' be on goes into near-silence at about 2:44 for quite a while. The camera looks away for a while, and when it looks back at 3:36, the track I don't know is now on the bottom Serato deck and the Vocals from System are being mixed in - apparently on the top deck - and it's all well and dandy until at 3:50 he takes the tune out of the top deck...and both tunes remain playing.

I'm pretty sure he has his transitions pre-recorded, and then he matches up the tracks that are the same - i.e., he has 2 MP3s with Ill Behaviour on it: one is an MP3 going from System into Ill Behaviour, and another is an MP3 with Ill Behaviour going into whatever the next tune is.

Someone please tell me I'm wrong.

It's possible he has a 3rd track playing internally (with an SL3?)

Edit: On second look, I'm not convinced this is actually "live". Right when the stage cam comes on, you can tell the waveforms don't line up with the currently playing track. I think it's just a crap edit job where the editor just kind of guessed where the video should go. At around 7 minutes, he cuts out and you can hear a bunch of screaming for the next track, but looking at the audience, I don't see any change in the crowd.

Need For Mirrors - Super Earth EP
I'm really excited about this release. NFM has been incredible lately and this release is no slouch.

Paul Saint Jack - Tear Gas EP
I can't say I know much about Paul Saint Jack, but this release makes me want to look up a lot of his older stuff.

Danny Byrd - Rave Digger (special edition)
Danny added a few already released tracks, a few VIPs and instrumentals and a couple of remixes. Personally, I'll probably grab the MJ Cole remix of Tonight only because I have a secret love of bassline/garage.

Amit - Never Ending
I'll admit I haven't gotten around to listening to the whole thing yet, but it's good to see a guy like Amit still putting out quality tunes.

***edit: I'm a moron, this was released in 06, this is just a "re-release"

Netsky / KG - Strobot / Seaside remixes

Netsky is a bit crap tbh... now that Hospital artists seem to get mainstream play automatically i wonder how Nu:tone's tracks will fare. I always thought the Matrix remix of 'Seven Years' is precisely the sort of dnb to be popular and get in thee the charts if promoted and got radio play.

He's got a handful of tracks I'd play out, but the vast majority of them are disposable club anthems with no shelflife.

I was under the pretense that the version I loved was the original. Now I realize that the song I am in love with right now is the VIP. What an amazing song - I really don't see how anybody can dislike Netsky's work. I am not impressed with every song on his debut, but Iron Heart is one of the best around.

It's pretty easy to dislike Netsky's work because he reuses the same high-pitched synthy noise on top of what would be a decent beat by itself. Half of the tunes from his album are completely unoriginal and you can tell Hospital rushed the release of the album due to his popularity surge in 2010.

Secret Agent
Pirate Bay
Swedish House Mafia - One (Remix)
Escape f/ MC Darrison
Pendulum - Witchcraft (Remix)

To me these all sound way too similar to play on the regular, which (for a DJ) reduces its shelf-life considerably. That doesn't mean they don't get played, but to me, Netsky takes a step away from the pure fundamentals of Drum & Bass. Sure, the genre will grow and morph, leaving the purists in the dust, but to say "I really don't see how anybody can dislike Netsky's work" confuses the hell out of me because Netsky's one of the most formulaic and unoriginal producers making dnb right now.

I still like Netsky but this is definitely true. The first four tunes on his album are top notch and showcase what he is capable of, but the other tunes (for me at least) just kinda blur together into one mediocre, forgettable track. However, like him or not, he's here to stay, for now at least.

No doubt, and as mentioned, he does have some redeeming tunes. I hate on a lot of that poppy new-sound dnb, but honestly, those are the exact kind of tunes that got me into dnb in the first place. They're easy to digest and kind to uneducated ears, almost like a gateway drug. Pendulum's Hold Your Colour comes to mind.

Even if all you guys think Netsky's generic or whatever, I still consider his album one of my favorite DNB albums of the past couple years and think it'd be a great introduction for anyone who wants to get into the liquid/Hospital side of drum & bass v:shobon:v

I think you mean the new sound of dnb. Hospital used to put out goodies like this:

London Elektricity - Rewind (1999)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oz3J9Hr1hdA

Landslide - Drum & Bossa (1999)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9N_6NdtBLs

Danny Byrd - Do It Again (2000)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N9MNI4GKRM

High Contrast - Return of Forever (2002)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ff0qD9zlQs

compared to...

B-Complex - Beautiful Lies (2010)

To me, a good introduction to Drum & Bass (Hospital style) would be Plastic Surgery 3, High Contrast's True Colours, London Elektricity's Billion Dollar Gravy, or even Logistic's Now More Than Ever.

You know what though? If someone were just now getting into Drum & Bass, I'd rather their gateway be Netsky than Pendulum (No, I'm not a bandwagon hater of them, I used to listen to them for a little while back in '07 'cause people were hyping them like mad for some reason, and then their jig was up with me. I honestly believe they're crap.)

You know what? gently caress it, We'll settle this on Friday; the theme? "Set Up a gateway 5". Who's in?

Totally in. I'm interested in seeing how a lot of you all got into the genre in the first place as well as seeing how you'd bring others in. This should be fun.

Also, while I have some abrasive things to say about Netsky, it mostly coming from a DJ's perspective. If people really like Netsky's album, more power to them. It's not BAD music whatsoever. I guess my frustrations with the whole thing exist because there is a very solid line between "dnb for the heads" and "dnb for the masses."

is pendulum calling his new stuff drum and bass? or he just exploring every musical option he has with a drum and bass background?

i dont want to hate on pendulum because he did have some banging tracks back in the day (kingston vampires), but i dont really think his new album is that drum and bassy to begin with, especially "in silico".

Pendulum (which is actually a full band) may have originally done a lot of drum & bass, but they've been putting out breaks tracks for just about as long as dnb. (see: Fasten Your Seatbelts) Hold Your Colour, In Silico, and Immersion are all multi-genre albums (including DnB, Breaks, Dubstep, and House).
