Alternatively, Rob Swire posted a few seconds of his Witchcraft remix on his Twitter: http://soundcloud.com/robswire/16-seconds-of-witchcraft-remix-unmastered It sounds more like The Island Part 2, which, while not nearly as drum-and-bassy as Netsky's, it's more the kind of upgrade I was expecting, and it definitely delivers.

Here's a BBC 1 radio rip of the full remix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2MQH22U0l0 The DJ (Zane Lowe? I don't listen to BBC1, but that's the guy who has debuted all their other big tracks recently) talking over it is pretty annoying, but it is a radio rip after all. Absolutely destroys the gently caress out of both the original and the Netsky mix, and it sounds more like something that belongs on Hold Your Colour, which is definitely a good thing. Also, I'm now aware of the title "drumstep". I never knew what to call tracks like The Island Part 2 and the second half of Sub Focus' album, since they weren't quite drum-n-bass but weren't quite dubstep either. But that moniker makes sense, and I kinda feel like a dumbass for being unaware of it before. It's so obvious

Anae posted:'Drumstep' is a bit of a silly title if you ask me. It's just half-time drum and bass. Also, Sub Focus doesn't have a single half-time track on his album. Which tracks were you thinking of? Tracks like "Could This Be Real" and "Move Higher". I guess they are more electro/house, but they sound kinda different than electro/house I've heard in the past, so I guess I thought they were something else.

LTJ was a much bigger name in the early days of drum-n-bass, so if you liked 90s DNB then you'll probably enjoy yourself. I think the Liquid DNB we hear today sort of evolved from artists like Bukem, based on everything I've heard of his. If you like Liquid, then going to see Bukem would probably be like a neat history lesson. Can't say for sure, though.

Hospitality Brixton is going on now. I know this because Hospital's tweeting off the hook about it, and I'm incredibly jealous I mean, just look at this line up! quote:Room 1 - Andy C + Dynamite MC, High Contrast, London Elektricity, Danny Byrd, Netsky, Fabio, B-Complex, Logistics B2B Nu:Tone, MC Wrec, AD, Darrison, Diane Charlemagne, Terri Pace, Elsa Esmeralda. There's also an afterparty featuring Danny Byrd and bacon sandwiches Unfortunately, I live in the States, where no events like this ever seem to occur. And I'm a huge Hospital fan, so seeing all these artists in one night would blow my loving mind.

I'm a huge Hospital fan, so I may be kind of biased, but still. There are artists, even other Hospital acts, that do what you're describing. But I've never found Netsky to be one of them. Every song on the album is great in my opinion, but the first few definitely stand out more than the others. I mean, when you put tracks like Iron Heart and these two in the beginning, there's no way for me to not get hooked. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raY0FX06ctQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lm0faZrdrg But what's even better is that it doesn't even fall apart towards the end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfQaiNBNSH0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMY4VqfTF68 Even the bonus track is awesome! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywxauc145YI This isn't my first post in here about Netsky's album, but I think it's a pretty important release. In my opinion, it's the most cohesive DNB album since albums like Era Of Diversion and Tough Guys Don't Dance came out a couple years ago. The synth lines in each song are so memorable. And I think everyone who enjoys this kind of sound should be listening.

But I'm not embellishing one bit when I say that almost every single tune from Netsky's album gets stuck in my head on a regular basis. I frequently catch myself whistling them. The rest of those albums have a few tracks like that, but not almost every track on the album. Sub Focus' album came very close to doing that for me, but Netsky's just goes all the way with it. That may be just me, though. That's why I made sure to say "in my opinion" before that statement.

I know, I know. I've heard his non-album tracks and think they're loving awesome. Not saying that those labels are the only drum and bass out there, just saying that their stuff is usually what I find myself most attracted to. And honestly, I still get excited every time I listen to albums like Tough Guys Don't Dance and Era Of Diversion. So I think I probably will enjoy listening to Netsky's self-titled a few years down the road. Ke$ha is just flavor-of-the-week pop poo poo, and I doubt she'll have much staying power (at least I hope she doesn't). Netsky's self-titled is just one of those albums that sticks with me, and probably still will in a few years. We're all good, chrix Just on different ends of the DNB spectrum. Not a bad thing.

I appreciate all the facets of DNB. As I've said before, Dieselboy's The Human Resource was what really got me into drum and bass in the first place. While I enjoy that darker, harder, grimier stuff from time to time, I find liquid to be generally much more appealing to listen to. It's not that I hate certain styles/artists of DNB, I'd just rather listen to stuff like Netsky / High Contrast / Danny Byrd / etc. on a more regular basis than I would artists like Dieselboy / Black Sun Empire / Spor etc. Evol Intent's Era Of Diversion is an exception, though. I can throw on that album whenever and immediately get sucked into it. Rageaholic fucked around with this message at 00:21 on Oct 14, 2010 |

I was watching some dubstep video on YouTube the other day and there was a Black Sun Empire song in the related section that I hadn't heard of, so I checked it out and it was a dubstep track. The extent of drum & bass in Pendulum's new music is that same drum beat they use in almost every song of theirs. They used to be much more D&B-oriented around the Hold Your Colour era and before, but yeah, chrix is right. That's why there's a separate Pendulum thread. They aren't so much a drum & bass act as they are a multi-genre electronic act. I still love 'em, though, despite them dropping D&B from their repertoire for the most part. For Favorite Producer Friday (or just Producer Friday, I'm not really sure which one it is), here are my 5 for High Contrast: (in no specific order) Lovesick https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7y4V6RrUIfo The first track on High Society. I fell in love with this one first time I heard it and it's one of those tracks that gives me this warm, chilled out feeling every time I hear it. Everything's Different https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LpPk9dhK8iw The first HC track I ever heard, and boy was I impressed the first time I heard it. It was the best, most refined liquid D&B I'd heard, and I was immediately in love. Right after the song finished playing the first time I heard it, I went and got Tough Guys Don't Dance and it was so great. Still one of my favorite albums to this day. Days Go By https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YF97oinYDQ The closer to Fabriclive 25 which sends goosebumps down my entire body every time I listen to that mix. It's just the perfect closer to something like that. I'm not sure that it produces the same impact when listened by itself, but in the context of the mix, goddamn it's powerful. That mix is absolutely crazy and one of my favorites, and this is a great inclusion in it. Brief Encounter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwN4v9HiBfM Orchestral, epic sounding tune. Sounds like something that could maybe be used in a car chase scene set at night in a Bond movie. Only Two Can Play (ft. Spoonface) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57l6Zi5C4Jk One of those tracks I keep coming back to more than others. Parts of Spoonface's vocals in this remind me of old jungle music, which is definitely a welcome quality in contemporary D&B. Rageaholic fucked around with this message at 10:54 on Mar 4, 2011 |
