After many long months of BSC sitting on my bookshelf, I finally got down to the business of actually reading it. Bloody hell. While Shivers' downfall seemed pretty inevitable from the start, I was surprised at how much my opinion of Monza shifted back and forth over the course of the novel. Despite the fuckups and poor decisions that felt pretty alienating as a reader, she ended up getting a sort of tragic sympathy from me. I was more surprised to find that my favorite characters ended up being Cosca and Friendly, two people that did not generate much interest in me when they were first introduced. I was thrilled when they came through alive. And NEVER have I seen a character I wanted to strangle as much as arrogant loving Morveer.
