I'm getting the same sort of feeling with Best Served Cold. I know it's ... right for certain people to be where they are and enter into the story, but I can't help but feel that he's pulling in tried and true characters just because they're familiar. I don't disapprove, there are plenty of new characters thrown into the mix.

He hasn't come up with anything really ground breaking. Barbarians of the frozen north (I groaned quite loudly when I saw the words frozen north appear in a description of them), middle eastern analog Gurkish, European analog Styria, wizards and demons...

It's the stories and characters that make it shine, not exactly the world or setting.

It would be fascinating to read an Abercrombie story that has one of the Eaters being the focus. It would fit in perfectly with his style of presenting a character and getting the reader to empathize with them and then exposing the depravity and fuckedupedness of said character.

Best Served Cold - Shenkt is an eater. :ssh: I was actually pretty taken back when he started to carve up Lucky Nim, but then I remembered that cannibalism is what makes an Eater an Eater, and all made sense. His super kill guy fighting powers are even more dumb and annoying when seen from his perspective, but his personal philosophy is surprisingly kind hearted. You know, aside from all the murdering.

One of the things I've always wondered about Abercrombie's world - who would win in a fight if both had plain weapons and both were in good health between Logen in Bloody-Nine mode and a "Furious" West.

West in "Furious mode" (if you can even call it that)
Beat the poo poo out of his defenseless, oval office of a sister (who totally had it coming)
Bit a dude in the face

Logen in Bloody-Nine mode
Survived 10+ duels with the best fighters in the north and took mortal wounds in each one that would have killed any other living human
On more than one occasion killed dozens of shanka without taking so much as a glancing blow
Murders everything in sight with indiscriminate rage
Killed Fenris The Feared: a near invulnerable, centuries old demonspawn

It's really no contest. Logen has some sort of supernatural ability, West just got really angry.

Best Served Cold: Shivers showed a sign of going into a similar berserk as Logen, just without the friend murdering. It only happened once and nothing really came of it though.

I hope Mr. Abercrombie fixes glaring goofs like this in the last book.

It's not a glaring flaw. It's not even a flaw. Logen himself called her out on this, asking her why she called everyone pinks when she couldn't see color. It basically came down to programmed racial prejudice. She didn't actually know (or care) his or anyone else's skin color, but she'd been exposed to the racism all her life that it just came naturally to her.

She's still a lovely character.

I've read these, the Malazans, ASoIaF, Locke Lamora, and WoT lately. Need something new to dive into!

Empire in Black and Gold by Adrian Tchaikovsky is a pretty OK trilogy. Weird setting, sort of a low fantasy industrial revolution with varying races of people who carry traits based on their insect relation. It's about a cluster of feuding, inwardly focused, city states in an area known as the Lowlands, being invaded by a foreign Wasp army that they refuse to acknowledge as a threat. You follow a group of people fighting against the wasps, trying to unite the Lowlands (to little effect) against the invaders.

It's entertaining enough, nothing really amazing. I haven't given up on the books down yet, but they certainly haven't caught my attention like Joe's "just one more chapter and then I'll go to sl-- oh god it's 5am" series did.

Sure, he does act out his moments of power I'M THE KING but after exercising that he sinks back down into a deeper depression and hopelessness about his situation.
