I have a 2016 GTI, and every time I turn on the car there's a loud clacking noise from the glove box. Also happens when I change turn the fan speed on or off.

Googling makes me suspect that is the HVAC recirculator motor that's failed.

My question: is replacing this worth paying someone? I'm a complete novice when it comes to any car issues. I'm usually happy to pay someone who knows more than I do to fix stuff. But my usual mechanic quoted $250 just to take it apart to see what the issue is and I'm wondering if maybe I've found my price limit.

I'd be asking myself, is it worth replacing? If you've still got a functional blower, hot air, cold air, and can make it blow different spots (windshield for defrost, body for AC, feet for heat), I'd be happy at that. Personally I'd leave it alone at any price, but it's your car and your call.

The sound is pretty annoying. It’s like something is haunting my glovebox and isn’t very happy with me. Also I’d just prefer if my car weren’t a slowly accumulating list of broken things.
