Being relatively poor, I opted for a budget sound system (it was all I could afford since I only sold $1,200 in food stamps and the first $900 went to PS3+TV). It's really irritating that each time I turn it on and off, I have to hit SOUND until it goes into surround mode. I really don't understand why these people are bitching.
Not to derail, but I can never tell if you're joking when you say you sell food stamps. I don't take any offense to it, just wondering if some joke is going over my head.

Edit: ^^^ Luckily, so is Steven Seagal and (most of) his movies.

Just got finished watching Criterion's Blu of Repulsion (dir. Roman Polanski). Never thought a black and white film could look so good. Criterion is really knocking it out of the park with these transfers, can't wait to see what else they have in store for us. In regards to the film itself, does anyone else find it ironic that the film hints that Carole's extreme fear of men was brought about by some sort of (presumably) sexual childhood trauma, given what Polanski has been accused of?

There's definitely some interesting things to poke around at in that movie, given Polanski's reputed misogynistic streak. The guy's Playboy interview from the late 60s is pretty bad in that regard. It's also extra juicy because of the adolescent naivete that Deneuve's character projects - it's like if somebody made a horror movie about how boys have cooties. Well, that and the rape.

I love, love, love Repulsion. I'm just waiting for the next B&N Criterion sale so I can pick up a bunch of their blus - I also want to grab Days of Heaven so badly it hurts.
Would you happen to have a link to that interview?

Also, I didn't really see it as him being misogynistic, mostly because the majority of the male characters in the film were creepy pervs who seemed only interested in Carole's body (with the exception of Colin, who gets brutally murdered all the same). Repulsion seems more of a pessimistic take on romantic relations than anything else.

Picked up the Vengeance Trilogy tin from Best Buy the other day, it was marked as $60 but rang up at $50 (same price as Amazon, but I'm pretty sure the tin is best-buy exclusive).

There's going to to be two Hobbit movies? Why?

e: Upon looking it up, it appears you are correct, there will be two parts, starring Tim from The Office (UK) as Bilbo. I don't really understand why a 300 page book needs two movies, but I guess we'll have to see.

Holy poo poo, I foolishly ventured into the blu-ray.com forums after reading this thread, and these people are mentally ill.

Guy posted this after he posted pictures of his movie collection and someone noticed he had two copies of some blu-rays (Mrs. Doubtfire, End of Days).

quote:

ye the doubles lol....um on a few occasions i may have asked amazon.ca or .com to send me out a replacement copy (for a "damaged" disc, or whatever)

of course they rarely ask me for the original copy back

and when they do, i may test them to see if they end up following up to see if i've actually returned it

they never do follow up lol....i can't help myself sometimes lol

It would make sense if he did this to re-sell the extra copy or lend them out to friends (it would still be wrong) but he just puts them on the shelf and probably never even watches either copy.

And they know have a entire subforum dedicated to movies they want to see released on Blu. I found some interesting lists to say the least.

quote:

Nightmare on Elm Street collection
IT
Running Scared
Casino
TMNT (originals)
Fallen
Toy Story
Running Man
Cyborg
Final Destination
The Grinch (Jim Carrey)

Judgement Night (1993). Such an awesome cast (Denis Leary, Cuba Gooding Jr., Emilio Estevez, Stephen Dorf, and Jeremy Piven). This was an extremely underrated film and used to scare me when I watched it as kid back because of the realism in it. Also the entire DBZ series on Blu-Ray.

That really is hysterical. The show is on TV pretty much ever day (sometimes on more than one channel at once), and its hardly the type of show that benefits from Blu.

I've had the Panny BDT210 for about a year and am extremely happy with it. It's got built in wi-fi, 3D, all the streaming services I need, excellent upconversion, and it loads almost as fast as the PS3. It's about $200 right now on Amazon. Slightly higher than your budget, but it's well worth the extra $50.

EDIT: Oh, and I've never had Netflix limit any shows to 100 episodes. That's just nutty.
On some Bluray players it only lists 100 episodes at a time, but if you start watching the show, the ones you've already watched disappear and slowly more and more episodes are added to the end (I hope that makes sense). If you want to watch a specific episode that's past the 100 listed, just watch a few minutes off the 100th episode and more should pop up.

There was also a spin-off in the US called That 80's Show. It's an abomination, and probably only worth watching it to see Glenn Howerton slumming it.

Regarding film grain, I can say definitively that a very high proportion of grainy Blu-Rays have artificial grain. That is, the 2K image has been scrubbed of all grain, enhanced for clarity/sharpness/definition, and then period/stock appropriate digital grain patterns are added back in. I've worked for one of the top companies in that field.
