Word on the web is Saving Private Ryan has some syncing issues. How does a problem like this make it to store shelves? Do these studios not watch their movies before they press them to discs?

I agree that it's not a huge deal, it's just amazing to me that there should even be such a problem on such a significant release.

I think Goodfellas is a huge step up from the DVD *shrug*. The lossy audio is kind of a bummer though. No sync issues with SPR on my PS3. It could conceivably be a defect in the disc that's causing only certain players to sync out for that brief period, but like the op states, PS3 owns.

When I was shopping for a new laptop a few months ago, one of my main requirements was that it have a Blu-Ray drive, obviously so I could watch my movies while traveling. Having an HDMI port is nice too so you can connect it to any HDTV on the go. The Vaio I ended up getting was about $150 more than that, but an infinitely superior machine. Never buy directly from Sony.

There's no website that sells them individually - you'd have to purchase them from private sellers, if there are any - and indeed there are - I've seen plenty for sale on the blu-ray.com trading forum. They're not only for trade, so you might want to dig a little deeper there - I'm sure you'll find a few for sale. Personally I find them to be pretty pointless and wasteful. Furthermore, out of the ~400 Blu-Rays I have, maybe 1 in 8 came with a slipcover. If only every 8th title on my shelf had a slipcover, it'd look rather stupid. The degree to which some people obsess over slipcovers is absolutely insane. People will refuse to buy certain titles without them, or buy others on the sole basis that they come with a slipcover. I've seen more than my fair share of posts where people explain how they go into a store and beg employees to just let them "have" the slipcovers off certain movies.

Lionsgate is re-releasing Rambo on July 27 with an extra 9 minutes of footage and an hour-long production diary. Stallone personally pushed for the extended cut of the film, so that's pretty sweet. Here's confirmation that all the aforementioned Criterion titles will be out in the coming months, plus an announcement that they will also be releasing Charade around the same time.

Agreed posted:How was the Rocky BD collection? I was close to buying it when I saw the local Wal-Mart had it in stock but the price is a bit steep without really knowing much about it (and not being THAT big of a Rocky fan). But if it's especially good, with a high quality transfer and good special features, etc., I may nab it and the Rambo collection just to have Stallone's iconic stuff. I think it's great. Some people give the first film a lot of flak (for its Blu-Ray transfer), but I think it looks a great deal how a low-budget mid-seventies film should look in HD. It could probably use a bit of cleaning up, but it won't happen any time soon. So if you can find it at a good price, I'd say it's worth the plunge.

A complete box set would most likely just consist of all 8 ultimate editions bundled together. I don't know why they'd wait fr the last two movies to come out - the first 2 ultimate editions have already been released, it makes sense to stagger them a couple at a time. Most likely Azkaban/Goblet will come out in November to coincide with the theatrical release of Hallows pt. 1, Phoenix/HBP will come out in July 2011 to coincide with Hallows pt. 2, and then the Ultimate editions of Hallows 1/2 are anyone's guess.

bradzilla posted:I've seen some talk here about how the old (fat) PS3 models don't do bitstreaming, meaning that it doesn't do true HD audio? And the new model slims do? And the PS3 would do the decoding and send it to the receiver? Is this why audio on most of my BDs seems to have no balance, such as the voices being low and explosions and stuff being way too loving loud. Because I have a fat PS3, and I need another BD player for the bedroom anyway. Is it worth it for true HD audio to buy a new slim? So if I do, the fat PS3 can go to the bedroom and the slim in the living room with the entertainment center. Bitstreaming just means that your player is sending the audio to the receiver, and allowing the receiver to decode it. However, the PS3 itself is capable of decoding lossless audio (such as TrueHD), so the lack of bitstreaming technically doesn't make any noticeable difference in your audio quality. Some audiophiles just piss and moan about wanting to be able to do everything via their receivers.

It still sucks. The only other individual movie I have out of hundreds that doesn't come in a normal case (other than digibooks) is Close Encounters, and that was released in 2007 so at least there's an excuse. I guess it's a small gripe in the grand scheme of things though, especially considering the caliber of the movie.

So, a film by the name of Outlander came out on Blu-Ray today. I had never heard of it before, but it appears to star James Caviezel as an alien who crash-lands on earth and helps a bunch of vikings kill another alien. Now, this seems like a pretty high concept to me, but reviews are mixed: 39% on RottenTomatoes, 6.4 on imdb. What do you say, goons? A fun little romp, or just more trash?

Bull Durham (one of the four August 3rd catalog titles announced by MGM) is already available as a Best Buy exclusive. The problem? It's a godawful MPEG-2 encode, which means the transfer was probably done 2-3 years ago and has just been sitting on a shelf somewhere. On the one hand it's no big deal since who the hell cares about Bull Durham, but on the other hand it does not foreshadow well for Blood Simple, Escape from New York and Kalifornia.

I only saw one episode of Life while it was airing and it was narrated by Oprah, so I can't attest to that, but everything I've heard says it's on par with Planet Earth, if not better. I just got done watching The Wolfman - holy crap, what an awesome take on a classic monster tale. I watched the director's cut and hardly noticed any of the pacing problems people complained about with the theatrical cut (which I never saw). Flawless PQ/AQ and a nice plethora of extras too (though sadly no commentary). Highly recommended.

It sounds like you got a disc that's encoded at 1080i50 (25fps as opposed to the normal 24). So it likely is indeed the censored version, and the 25fps speedup is accounting for that extra 3 minutes.
