One of the (I admit, petty) disappointments I have about blu-ray is that most cases feel so much cheaper and flimsier than dvd cases, and the blue color somewhat bothers me. Those criterion cases look perfect.FitFortDanga posted:One of the things I love about Blu-Ray is the reduced shelf space. I know it's only a few millimeters, but it adds up.

Interesting... I borrowed A Clockwork Orange from my friend and was immediately disappointed in the picture quality. Read up on it and found that Kubrick was dicking around with experimental lenses at the time, so everything is blurry and no amount of restoration is going to fix that. Still better than the DVD though, and for $12 on Amazon I might get it anyways. What do you call it when strong sources of light have a red edge on one side and blue edge on the other side? Because the movie is completely lousy with those.

Captain Charisma posted:I guess at $6 it might be a non-issue but wasn't the Time Bandits disc a disappointment "Disappointingly, Time Bandits makes its U.S. debut on Blu-ray with an interlaced 1080i/AVC- encoded transfer that looks as though it may have been recycled from some HDTV broadcast master. (Although I can't say for sure.) If you have a large screen and/or you look closely, you'll definitely notice frequent macroblocking in the backgrounds and you'll spot a good deal of compression noise and other artifacts throughout. The print also features a moderate amount of flecks and scratches. Despite these problems, though, Time Bandits looks okay, and may even be the most subjectively eye-pleasing of the four HandMade titles that Image is releasing on the 24th, if only because the film had a bigger budget than Mona Lisa, The Long Good Friday, or Withnail and I. The transfer is persistently soft, but there's a clear upgrade from prior DVD editions and fine detail borders on better than merely acceptable at times. Color too sees an improvement, with a more balanced look overall, strong primaries, and even-keeled skin tones. Black levels, however, are a bit hazy and inconsistent. The film was released on Blu-ray by Optimum in U.K., and while I haven't personally seen that version, it features a much higher bit-rate, for what it's worth, is in 1080p, and sits on a dual-layer disc. A pity Image Entertainment couldn't have procured that transfer for the U.S. release." But hey, it's $6

Thanks for the info, guys. As it turns out, I was watching Shoshanna running from Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds, and noticed that anything above zero sharpness was giving her annoyingly obvious edge enhancement (when her dark silhouette was against the bright sky)

I'm kind of wary of the idea of an extended cut of a Kubrick film. However, this was a fun read about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001:_A_Space_Odyssey_(film) quote:Kubrick filmed several scenes that were deleted from the final film. These include a schoolroom on the moon base—a painting class that included Kubrick's daughters, additional scenes of life on the base, Floyd buying a bush baby from a department store via videophone for his daughter, details about the daily life on Discovery, additional space walks, astronaut Bowman retrieving a spare part from an octagonal corridor, a number of cuts from the Poole murder sequence including the entire space walk preparation and shots of HAL turning off radio contact with Poole—explaining the non sequitur of HAL's response to Bowman's question, and notably a close-up shot of Bowman picking up a slipper during his walk in the alien room—the slipper can still be seen behind him in what was then the next shot[85]. The most notable cut was a 10-minute black-and-white opening sequence featuring interviews with actual scientists, including Freeman Dyson,[86] discussing extraterrestrial life, which Kubrick removed after an early screening for MGM executives. The actual text survives in the book The Making of Kubrick's 2001 by Jerome Agel[87]. If the music intro and outro are included, 29 minutes of film have been excised from the theatrical version.[88] Kubrick's rationale for editing the film was to tighten the narrative; reviews suggested the film suffered too much by the radical departure from traditional cinema story telling conventions. Regarding the cuts, Kubrick stated; "I didn't believe that the trims made a critical difference. [...] The people who like it, like it no matter what its length, and the same holds true for the people who hate it". Steve Yun fucked around with this message at 21:52 on Dec 14, 2010 |

I'm a little confused by the wikipedia article. Kubrick destroyed the deleted footage, therefore he wants the theatrical cut to be the only cut? Or does he not really care about whether the deleted footage was deleted or not, and it's the same either way to him?

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind reviewed, finally: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Eternal-Sunshine-of-the-Spotless-Mind-Blu-ray/16770/ quote:After a showing on HD-DVD what seems like ages ago—April 2007—followed by a Japanese Blu-ray release that was snapped up by eager importers, Eternal Sunshine finally makes it to Blu-ray in the U.S. with a 1080p/AVC-encoded transfer that's much better than merely acceptable but just shy of great. By and large, this is a satisfying high definition presentation and an immediately appreciable upgrade from the DVD. Clarity is not quite exemplary, but is certainly strong, with ample fine detail visible in the pores and whiskers on Jim Carrey's face, the patterns of cloth, and the textures and lines of in-focus background objects. Color also seems accurate to Gondry and cinematographer Ellen Kuras' intent, vacillating between warm early memories and the cold, ghostly palette of the flight through Joel's mind. (Of course, Clementine's ever-changing hair hues are always ultra-vibrant.) That said, there are a few minor issues that keep Eternal Sunshine from looking its best. Although grain appears entirely natural through much of the film, certain scenes have a slightly filtered, more artificial-looking quality—as if smoothed out with some light DNR—and there are also telltale traces of edge enhancement at times. Black levels also have a tendency to be a bit too dense, occasionally robbing the image of some of its shadow detail. However, none of these quibbles would keep me from picking up this disc. Eternal Sunshine still looks appropriately dreamy.
