Dolby Vision builds off the HDR10 spec and requires paying licensing fees to Dolby. If you get an "Ultra HD Premium" 4K TV (or a Sony one with similar specs, though they've decided to not use the Ultra HD Premium branding), you will be fine - certainly for 4K UHD Blu-rays, as HDR10 support is a mandatory part of the spec. Who knows if Dolby Vision blu-rays will even ever materialize, and even if they did, you'd still be able to access the HDR10 core.

The just-announced Lone Wolf & Cub blu-ray boxset from Criterion is up for preorder on Amazon, and they've mistakenly priced it as like a single Criterion BD instead of a boxset - $39.99 instead of $99.99. That's cheaper than the November BN sale price would be. They might not honor it, but I'd definitely give it a shot.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask at all, but since I doubt a lot of hard core CD posters browse SA-mart often, would anybody be interested in selling me their Polytechnique blu-ray? It's absurdly expensive new.

Polytechnique is available at Amazon.ca for around $12 USD. With shipping to the US, it's about $20 USD.

I'm not sure there was ever a US release, I think some 3rd party sellers are just hawking the Canadian version at a high markup.

I haven't compared the special features yet, but just the transfer alone sounds like it's new - 4k-sourced "restoration" of both the theatrical and directors cut. Not that the old BD was too shabby looking, but I'm definitely curious to see this new scan.

I would expect the following for the Mad Max High Octane Collection

Mad Max - Reuse of the previously released MGM disc, not the Shout Factory one

Road Warrior - Reuse of the second Blu-ray released by Warner Bros. (lossless audio and AVC compression, but same base transfer)

Beyond Thunderdome - Reuse of the only existing Blu-ray

Fury Road Black & Chrome Edition makes no mention of being silent, but you can just mute your TV/sound system (and to cut this off at the pass - you can't just desaturate the colors on your TV to recreate the black & white aspect, true regrading is necessary).

It's funny cause if you read the Blu-ray.com forums, you'd think that new American Werewolf release is a crime against humanity or something. I think the preview pics looks great. What's wrong with people at that site? I was reading a thread there awhile ago about "black crush" on Sony Blu-rays (I don't see what they're talking about), and someone there found the phone number for the D.O.P. on one of the black crushed movies and called him to see if he could get the disc recalled.

People have different knowledge levels, enthusiasm levels, and standards for certain things. I certainly wouldn't argue that such issues are real-world "important," and calling some random guy with your complaints is off the deep end, but I'm also not a fan of people who don't care saying "what a bunch of nutjobs, what with their knowing technical details and caring about the presentation of their movies."

Arrow just announced a US release of their previously-region-B-locked-only Hellraiser 1-3 set. Like the UK one, this is limited and will probably sell out super quick, so you might want to jump on an Amazon preorder if you're interested. The price is high now, but Arrow US releases always seem to start that way on Amazon and then drop to a much more attractive price by release day. - http://amzn.to/2dYq62T

There is no DVD set, Arrow mostly just releases Blu-rays. The UK set from months ago was Blu-ray only as well. Amazon's listings aren't perfect, especially when things first go up.

As for the price, it'll go down substantially. All the Arrow releases start out at MSRP on Amazon for some reason, but they all steadily go down to around 40-50% off by release date.

And Hellraiser 2 is awesome. Fact.

Burned BD-R nonsense? This is a thing?

Sadly there's a lot of BD-R nonsense going on these days. At first it was just indie films / kickstarter-level stuff, but there have been a few large moves this way in the last year. First was FilmRise, some garbage investment company that ate up distribution for a bunch of smaller labels (Monterey Films, Artsploitation, Screen Media, etc.) - there's a lot of junk, but also some gems like The Greasy Strangler, For The Love Of Spock, White Girl, The Nightmare, German Angst, etc. (full list here - http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?studioid=1850). Then Anchor Bay / Starz started doing it for some of their less flashy releases. And now Sony, the father of Blu-ray, is doing it with their "Choice Collection" of catalog titles - Karate Kid 3 & 4, Marie Antoinette, Body Double, Little Women, 8 Crazy Nights, etc.

It's also going on with some TV releases, though thats sadly been happening for DVD too for awhile. Fox is the worst with TV seasons on DVD-R, but now random CBS and Paramount stuff is showing up on Amazon in BD-R form with no fanfare.

This only seems to be happening in the US. Canada just doesn't get these releases, and the UK/Germany/Australia/Japan (seems random, but these are the other countries with large home video markets) get them as pressed discs (if they get them at all - movies usually yes, TV shows usually no). I've been importing a lot of discs these days...

I don't think it bodes badly for the market in general, because much more obscure stuff is getting released on pressed discs by smaller labels all the time - Shout Factory is releasing so much good stuff, Criterion and Kino are mining the arthouse scene, absolute trash is getting pressed and sold by companies like Mill Creek, Code Red and Massacre, etc. As far as I can tell, it's just that Fox/Sony/Paramount/Anchor Bay have decided to be lazy. BD-Rs are a worse product (less compatible in players, shorter lifespan going by CD-R and DVD-R test results) with higher per-disc cost, which is passed directly to the consumer. And they are only being sold on Amazon, and are not even announced via press release in most cases - they just appear one day. They seem to be set up to fail.

Yeesh. I guess I'll be careful with what blurays I'll buy from Amazon. I was planning on getting that new Star Trek show on bluray next year whenever it released, but now I feel weary.

So is this listing of The Greasy Strangler legit or this BD-R nonsense?
https://www.amazon.com/Greasy-Stran...reasy+Strangler

Any way to tell before buying?

I don't think you have to worry about Star Trek Discovery - lots of people still buy everything related to Star Trek, I'm sure that'll get a regular retail release. These BD-Rs aren't sold in stores, just online, and mostly through Amazon (who provides the BD-R notice and warning about incompatibility with XBox One).

For The Greasy Stranger: instead of paying $24.95 + tax + shipping for the barebones BD-R that FilmRise is releasing in the US, you could import the UK BD - it's a regular pressed disc, it's region free, and it has a commentary track. I paid $18.90 total, including shipping to the US.
