I just found out about Dead Alive on bluray. I'm pretty sure what came out as Dead Alive was a bit cut down, so anyone know if this has all of the Braindead content? I'd like to jump on it since I'm pretty sure Peter Jackson has no interest in revisiting his old good movies for any special editions.

Vinegar Syndrome have two limited 5th anniversary sets where they're putting five movies onto Bluray that'd previously only been on DVD. https://vinegarsyndrome.com/shop/5-films-5-years-volume-1-and-2/ I skipped the porno one, but the Vol. 2 exploitation set looks pretty fun. Just wish they'd lose that cheesy lady sillouette logo.

Egbert Souse posted:Given that 90% of Vinegar Syndrome's output are either pornos or slasher movies, it just seems right to have a slightly tacky logo. Pee leg girl looks completely out of place on the Liquid Sky box. I really think it undermines their efforts. Give it the heave-ho. Just use this: The word 'Syndrome' is enough to point to the exploitation side.

I'd been away from buying a lot of discs for a few years, moving to renting on iTunes, but recently getting on 4k I now have a few UHD discs and special features (for big studio films at least) seem like an almost dead concept. I got Blade Runner 2 and Mother! and it's just the simplest EPK type stuff with zero audio commentary. It's pathetic. I understand it. Why bother when the market is shrinking? But, bummer.

CelticPredator posted:Usually if you buy a movie on iTunes the special features will be the same as they are on the Blu Ray. And they're usually miniscule. Five years ago the new Blade Runner would definitely have had hours of behind the scenes content and at least two commentaries instead of a 20-30 minute doc and none. e: Of course there are exceptions. The new Twin Peaks has a ton. Still just talking current release studio pics. Teenage Fansub fucked around with this message at 23:16 on Jan 18, 2018 |

Rageaholic Monkey posted:The special features on Mother! were cool at least for seeing how they controlled the robo-baby and carried it around it a giant industrial case. I wish they could have put together an extra version of the movie made out of the Dogville type rehearsal you see for a bit in the doc.

I, Butthole posted:At least you get the option of the special features. The 2D blu-ray in Australia only has the prequel shorts included - the featurettes are on a retailer specific bonus disc, only available with the 2D version of the film, that's only available to order online. The retailer, JB Hi Fi, is probably the biggest media bricks-and-mortar store chain in the country, and is in just about every single shopping centre and has a shitload of standalone locations, but if you order it online, it goes through our woeful postage system and will take 5-7 business days to arrive, maybe. Then there's the 3D version, which lacks the bonus disc, and is somehow $5 more expensive. Weird. I got the Au/NZ UHD in store and the packed in regular Bluray had the shorts, special feature and movie on one generic disc. I can't imagine a separate disc that just had the piddly little docos that probably don't amount to an hour. Teenage Fansub fucked around with this message at 10:07 on Jan 19, 2018 |

New bluray from Vinegar Syndrome, Welcome Home Brother Charles/Emma Mae double feature. If you don't know why WHBC is a special movie, check out the image gallery on the film's page https://vinegarsyndrome.com/shop/welcome-home-brother-charles-emma-mae/ And it sounds like Emma Mae, while not having any penis strangling, might actually be a great movie https://letterboxd.com/film/emma-mae/

Iron Crowned posted:For those of you that don't get the Newsletter Vinegar Syndrome has started shipping the March preorders, and April's releases are now up for preorder. Terror looks incredible. I might like VS just as much for their collections of screenshots I can use as wallpapers than the releases themselves. Also, Liquid Sky is now in stock as a standard edition without the slipcase. https://vinegarsyndrome.com/shop/liquid-sky/ edit: Checking on Letterboxd, apparently I've seen Terror at a movie marathon. I dunno about Netflix or Amazon, but iTunes 4k streams acceptably enough for my eyes if I don't feel like splurging on a disk.

The Last Jedi UHD just got delivered here in NZ. It'll be the first 4k native disk I've watched at home edit: This movie is punishing me for my sweet 2.0 setup. When the music's cranking in space battles, radio chatter between ships is pretty much obliterated. Teenage Fansub fucked around with this message at 10:53 on Mar 28, 2018 |

Rageaholic Monkey posted:Also I guess the UHD name is misleading since a lot of these seem to be fake 4K. Apparently they look better than regular Blu-Rays, but still. It's a problem with the format arriving at a time where it's still too costly for effects laden productions to render at or above the native resolution. And those are exactly the movies you'd usually expect to be AV demo material. The Last Jedi arriving in actual 4k is a bit of a turning point, hopefully. Even with straight digital photography, some DOPs prefer certain cameras that don't even reach 4k. Blade Runner 2 was shot sub natively, while shows have been made for Netflix in real 4k for years.

Phantom Menace was still mostly shot on film with real sets, models and miniatures, so there would be some benefit to going UHD. It was pre-DI, so there would be plenty of pure film wherever there wasn't an integrated digital effect. Doubt they'd ever bother, though.
