If you have the money to send half a dozen 5-8 dollar cigars that's awesome too. Even in the shittiest conditions, sitting back smoking a fat cigar can somehow make things seem normal. Just make sure to include the moisture producing humidor things in the package so the cigars don't dry out on the way over.

Farecoal posted:Not in the military, so I'm probably going to sound dumb, but I've always wondered what the protocol was for officers of the same rank. If there are two officers of the same rank in a combat situation, and they're the highest ranking ones in a unit, who takes command? Time in Grade is technically the determining factor. In practice, it would be whoever is more capable/tells the other guy he is taking charge. Also, if one officer held a higher billet than the other, it would make him the guy in charge even if the other guy has been in grade or service longer.

I don't have a ton of stuff, and I'm not going to sham (buying like 4000 lbs in sand), whats the deal here? Do I get paid for mileage and gas, or has that changed? At the end of your move, you will settle everything up with the TMO (or whatever they are called in your branch) guys. The receipts for truck rentals, gas, packing materials, etc... don't actually change the rate you are paid at. That itself is a fixed rate based on distance between stations, the amount of weight you moved, and your paygrade. However, receipts will reduce your tax burden. The difference between what you are paid and the amount it costs you to move is taxed at a higher rate than normal.

Half the Battalion fell out before we were two blocks down the road. Our 1.5 mile run turned into a .5 mile run/walk/run and none of our leadership ever spoke of the event again.

DoktorLoken posted:Do they make you remove your mask in the gas chamber outside of basic? I mean it's funny in retrospect but that poo poo sucks. In the Marine Corps, we used to have to remove the mask and hold it in front of us at arms length. It's changed in the last 5-10 years to where we now have to put two fingers through each side and touch the lenses in order to break the seal and demonstrate we know to clear the mask. It seems there used to be too much leeway for our NBC Marines to haze the poo poo out of anyone they didn't like. Since you obviously have to close your eyes when removing the mask, you cannot tell when everyone has theirs off. Old chambers I used to go through, I could never hold my breath long enough to make it through the clear part. Turns out the NBC guys would just wait until everyone was breathing CS before allowing us to don and clear our masks. I know they tried charging some of our NBC guys for hazing because of the way they ran chambers but I was too junior to have any idea whether or not they wound up getting punished.

iceslice posted:My travel time will exceed the allotted time (I've got leave time in there too), and mileage is going to be over so I'm just expecting to get what the rate is. Where I'm confused is the per diem. There is a breakdown in JTFR saying $77 of the $123 is the lodging cost, and they do require you to keep a receipt of all lodging, but I haven't read enough of it to understand if you do or don't get that money regardless of where you stay. Keep receipts for gas, truck rental, packing supplies, etc. You will get paid the same rate based on weight moved regardless of how many receipts you show. However, the more receipts you have showing costs associated with the move, the less tax burden you will have. The profit you make on a DITY move is taxed at a higher than normal rate (I forget the exact rate but it's in the 20 some odd percent range). Your Per Diem is paid regardless of receipts. It makes no difference if you sleep in your car or in the Hilton, you get paid the same rate based on the number of travel days allocated.

It's not officially authorized but the collection of plaque funds, from SNCOs and Officers at least, is widespread throughout the Corps. I haven't ran into any instances of junior Marines and Sailors being required to put in money though.

I don't think Corpsman can wear the Marine Corps dress blues though.

It was a pretty miserable existence overall but I don't think there were long term health problems or anything from it. I don't know anything about the pacific northwest but I agree with Godholio. If you went down to the southwest there are enough survival nuts and other poo poo that you could probably make some decent money training civilians in combat lifesaving type stuff. -edit- I just saw how old these posts were.
