20. Caddyshack (1980) (added 03-10-23): Despite growing up on a healthy diet of '80s movies and Bill Murray being my favorite actor, I don't think I've so much as caught five minutes of this on cable.

Classic. Also the finest role for one of my heroes, Rodney Dangerfield.

And thanks for the film perspective Zogo, always cool to see.

I just saw Harold and Maude, very cool! That went down smooth, one movie rear end movie. Cinema magic. Tight 91 mins, fun shots and editing, delivers the goods. Lovable characters, great vibe, cool tunes, some good thoughtful philosophy stuff in there, good gags, touching stuff. It has thrilling car scenes even. Glad I finally saw it.

Random note, I was about to say two thumbs up, got curious if Ebert liked it. His 1½ star review is online, and I kinda guessed he might not have liked it. I feel like his taste got more up my alley later in his career. Though it's all personal taste, and takes change over the years. It is interesting to hear the movie wasn't a hit or critically acclaimed at the time, catching on later. Like a lot of cool things do. Though he did give The Big Lebowski four stars. Siskel's vintage newspaper reviews aren't as google-able.

The list:

Hard Times - Looks like a better Bronson movie, said to be must see by Tarantino.

La Haine - I hear it's cool. (using the tactic of freezing this flick, not quite feeling that vibe at the moment.)

Trouble in Mind - keeping the 80s picks rolling.

Gridlock'd - looks like a 90s gem.

Duck Soup - keeping the comedy history thing going. Plus Nic Cage referenced Harpo recently, and he knows his stuff.

The 36th Chamber of Shaolin - More HK, because it's cool. Haven't seen much Gordon Liu.

Watch Out, We're Mad - Italy corner. This stars those Trinity comedy duo guys. They have a beat em up game.

The Hidden Fortress - I'd like to check out more of Kurosawa's stuff.

Companeros - some high quality Sergio spaghetti I hear.

Sex Lies & Videotape - A modern indie you hear about, plus Soderbergh is interesting. It's from 1989, which is good.

Hooper - Boning up on Burt.

Rutger rules.

I watched Sex, Lies, and Videotape. I dug it, very cool watch. The first two thirds in particular really breezed by, really into the characters and dialogue style. The more intense last third of the movie I also liked, but I didn't feel like I connected with quite as much in some ways. But still, very cool movie, and some of the better characters for a few cool actors.

Kudos on all the Bonds! And shout-out to Godzilla.

Been rewatching some of both those fine series lately. I would enjoy a crossover of those two way more than another King Kong crossover, no disrespect to Kong. The first IDW Godzilla comic series did star a character who looked like Jason Statham. Statham for Bond in 007 v Godzilla, book it.

Those top picks are pretty rad! Also, I haven't been in this thread for a while, I'm gonna go for another mulligan. I'm putting my previous list on ice for a bit, intending to get back into the habit with another list. In other words, a lot of 80s and 90s movies etc.

I really liked that, and of course, Dick Miller!

Here's my list:

The Outlaw Josey Wales - Western movies, to quote Motörhead.

Atlantis (2001) - Still meaning to see some animated movies I missed.

Malcolm - 1986 slot, Australia bonus.

Patriot Games - Tom Clancy, Harrison Ford, Sean Bean. Maybe good.

Thomas Crown Affair (1999) - A 90s remake with attitude. Tony Hawk approved?

The Fabelmans - Somehow seems homework-esque, yet looks good.

My Sassy Girl - burned a CD-R of this 20+ years ago. Also do people prefer the director's cut?

Moonstruck - Nic Cage, Cher, it's a movie.

Son in Law - Perhaps Pauly Shore's most acclaimed film? Also starring Carla Gugino.

Working Girl (1988) - 80s movie, hear good things.

#150 Flesh + Blood - Medieval action from Paul Verhoeven. 8/25/23

Very cool movie, it's like the original Berserk. Can't go wrong with Rutger.

I watched Working Girl (1988). It was a pleasant enough watch, but not one that really grabbed me. The romcom part was the most engaging, but it's also kind of slight. The kind of generic make a deal going up in the business world thing to me was just kind of dull. I guess I'm more of a Broadcast News guy, or for totally zany Secret of My Success.

But not without its charm, the main three are all really good in it. Though I felt the lead was a little underwritten at times, but I get what they were going for there. The business stuff just seemed so I dunno, vacuous? But too chill and just part of the plot etc to feel like it's a satire much. Also the going for poignant bit where she has the office job and it's zooming out to show all the office windows, to me that played more like an existential horror scene. But it's an 80s movie so it all goes by pretty fast. Joan Cusack is always great.

The Tall T sounds great, love Elmore Leonard. And I hear that's one of the few movies he liked, especially for early adaptations.

The only Elmore's I've read so far don't have movies, so I have yet to compare directly myself. I'm also interested in seeing the original 3:10 to Yuma.

Speaking of which, I will be back in action in this topic soon, with that pick from a while ago, also a western fittingly, Josey Wales.

Too good, Beavis and Butt-Head are like a fine wine. The recent movie is great too, and the revivals of the show.

I watched The Outlaw Josey Wales, good stuff! Been meaning to watch it for 20 years or so, the mystery of the backlog, no idea why it took me so long. But very cool, just a solid 70s slice of gritty yet fun Western adventure.

Clint is always on, and saying reckon a lot and squinting all intense is pretty cool. I like the bits of the humanity when finding other people etc, and the ol' over-the-top mythical wild west badass movie stuff. Not as legendary to me as the Leone movies, not that I would expect it to be, but it's an enjoyable medley of these Western movie styles and vibes for that era. I reckon.

I also watched Moonstruck, pretty cool, charming yarn, quality Cage, Cher is good, a laidback quirky flick.

Also loved Duck You Sucker which I saw the other day finally. And a shout-out to Goodfellas and Casino, had a cool rewatch of those, and now I'm a big fan of Casino which I wasn't so much before. Really well done.

Happy to hear on the Godzilla thing! I also watched 54 again with a friend lately, and we saw Minus One naturally. I'll say, on the intimidated thing, the Heisei movies (Biollante from 1989 through Destoroyah in 95) you can jump right it. It's a reboot that started with Godzilla 84, though I actually think you can skip that one, or go back to it (not as cool for me). Biollante brought his best look and the vibe they carried with in the 90s.

And the 2000s ones you can watch any time, GMK and Final Wars are especially fun. If you haven't seen those.

I dig this one, 80s cinema is a good time, also very cool that you'll be seeing Wild at Heart! One of my fav Lynch movies.

I watched The African Queen, this was cool. Hepburn and Bogart are always great, and this was my first time seeing Bogey in color! Fun charming characters, solid character building and atmosphere with the two of them there. Some aspects could've connected with me more, but I still really enjoyed it. One nerdy point of view I had is I can see how movies such as this one were an influence on Lucas for Star Wars. At least that popped out to me a few times. Always cool watching the cinema greats be stars.

new Godzilla 2000: Millennium - Godzilla enters a new era. 4/27/24

Good flick!

Alrighty, I watched Son in Law, a part of the Weasel saga. I enjoyed how confident the movie is that everyone loves Weasel-mania, and everyone in the movie says his catch phrases and learns his Pauly Shore ways. I am personally agreeable to this, but I see how it is historically considered divisive. That said sometimes the movie could've had a little more going on, with the farm shenanigans scenes and the dramedy plot with the villain ex guy etc.

And yet, there is a purity to the film's vision. I like how Crawl is a magical guru who improves everyone's lives with his laid-back wisdom. I enjoy the early 90s-ness, which carries the film a bit with its vibes. But it still could be better, and yet, it's pretty ok. Could've had maybe a couple more scenes of the leads adventuring or bonding, one or two less of the farm war. Gugino is good, Tiffani Thiessen is always good, quality cast, and the cameo from the Encino Man is pretty dope. Grindage.

Here's my list:

Nice, always good times with the big G. It is wild to think that we'll never get "man in suit" Godzilla movies again. At least we've got toku shows on TV with some suits. Granted I know there are pros to the CGI way (it is wild how much those actors had to handle), just saying there's a beauty and fun to that art form. I really dig that millennium series run too.
