I was there in the early 90's for Russian. There were some truly bizarre individuals attending during that time. All us prior service would stay well away and drink our post-PT beers in peace.

As prior service and a squad leader, DLI was pretty much awesome for me. After classes and PT, I'd roll down to the Rose and Crown and get pleasantly shitfaced before heading home to attempt to parse the genitive case.

They run screaming to the nearest bar like the rest of us. I was in offpost housing, so I didn't have to deal with the little darlings unless I was in class, or on CQ.

The typical trainee at DLI is smarter than your average 18 year old and knows it. That being said, they have the wisdom of a wood louse and the morals of a crack whore.

I had been an 11B for 6 years, and I had never seen an E2-E4 with less common sense than some of my fellow "students".

Is there a written proficiency exam for Thai that the DoD (or some other government agency) uses that anyone knows about? I'm a civilian and have taken an OPI over the phone (through a contractor, Language Testing International or something like that), but they don't offer a written exam. Most of my language course focused on reading/writing and I'm crap over the phone in any language, so I'm hoping this isn't a permanent bottleneck for me (I'm hoping to get a job with my language skills as an analyst or something, either with the government or a civilian contractor).

The DLPT (Defense Language Proficiency Test) used to be administered by DLI and most military posts had an education center where it could be given. Note that I have been out of the Army for 15 years so my intel is pretty stale.

I was at DLI for language for 97B (I think it's 35L now) Counterintelligence Agent. I had spent my previous enlistment at Benning and Bragg, so my immediate reaction to the insanity of the Presidio was :psyboom:

Fortunately, in the early 90s' it wasn't AS sperg-tacular as it is now (hordes of wanna-be wiccans aside), but all the smart prior service got off post and stayed off post as quickly as possible simply to retain their sanity.

The education you get there is excellent, but most of the initial enlistment types that attend should have been drowned at birth.

We did have a couple of affairs, at least three pregnancies, several suicide attempts (none successful), and the usual 18 through 20-something drama, but strangely enough, nobody in my year long Russian course got popped on a drug test.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you get a chance to go to DLI, do it. You avoid the idiots and keep your cool.

Plus, Monterey is awesome and an easy drive to San Francisco.

We had people recycled to a different language (Spanish) if they were rocks, but nobody in my class got booted from the school. I think we only had two Article 15s the entire year long cycle. One chowderhead that failed to report for CQ duty, and another for underage drinking.

The Russian instructors at F Co were an interesting group. The wash out rate in Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Russian is incredible. Unless you can focus on your studies or be an innate loving language sponge...you will crash and burn. I was lucky cause I already knew one language besides English and I knew how to study.

I love Monterey and Northern California, so I stayed away from Post as much as possible. Did my homework and drank heavily on my off time. It was a pretty wonderful year.

Try your best to avoid on-post drama. I joined the Run Team (is that still around?) and hung with other prior service and our families (BBQs and the like) to help keep myself sane.
