Konstantin posted:Be prepared for a very long wait time, I applied for a Federal job in February, interviewed in June, and am still in the system, with the HR people telling me it will take at least another three months for the background check and medical to clear (after an hour and a half hold time before someone answered at their helpdesk.) I know it will be worth it at the end, but don't expect it to be like the private sector where you get a decision fairly quickly. I hear that for some agencies, the processing time between your initial contact and hiring can be as much as 18 months. Apparently Obamas guidelines address this. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/05/11/AR2010051104357.html I applied for a DoT Analyst position in December. I completely forgot about it till I got an email last week telling me the position had been filled and thanking me for my time. Question for anyone with Geospatial Intelligence Agency experience. I applied for the hiring event they are holding in August. Supposedly they are going to call people for interviews and such sometime this month to see if they are good to go for next months event. My boss at FEMA told me that apparently of all of the intelligence agencies, this one hires quite a bit and is much easier to get in at entry level. Any truth to this or was he blowing smoke up my rear end? Handsome Ralph fucked around with this message at 15:48 on Jul 5, 2010 |

If it's an invite-only fair, though, then don't expect to be interviewed at the fair if you aren't called (but there's still time). Yeah they closed the posting on the 18th and said they would call sometime afterwords for interviews for the fair. It was invite only so I'm hoping that they'll call sometime in the next few weeks with the holiday weekend and all. Considering the fair isn't till August 14/15, I've got time. Seriously, I hate how the 4th of July/end of the second quarter causes everyone to shut down their hiring stuff for the last two weeks of June and they basically start calling again after the holiday weekend. That makes three of us then. Good thing DC is pretty awesome city. Thanks for posting that link CherryCola! Edit:gently caress! I totally would have gone to that career fair had I not dropped my suit off at the cleaners and said I'd grab it Friday. Also, figures I move away from Boston and they have Passport Specialists positions up there opening up. My boss at my internship told me that they would be hiring for that position in DC and she would speak with a former colleague so I could at least land an interview. Oh well, I'll call her anyways, maybe same colleague has something going on with Foreign Affairs or Program Analyst. Handsome Ralph fucked around with this message at 22:54 on Jul 13, 2010 |

I use a word document that's basically a copy/paste of my unofficial transcript. If anything, they just glance over that initially to see if your course load is something they like. When they start to get serious, that's when they ask for the official transcript that you usually request from your schools admin office.

Well I finally found gainful employment that isn't retail and isn't a temp gig with a research database company. It's not with the Feds but it's certainly a huge step in the right direction considering the way the economy is right now. Here's to hoping after a few years of experience and a grad degree under my belt, I can finagle something with the Fed.

I did ask if they had alternate times or evening testing and they said no to both, so I tried and they were polite about it either way. Just submitted an application with OPM for a Writer-Editor job. https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/416815800 Long shot, but anyone here work for OPM or in this particular office? Any pointers? I'm 99.9 positive I'm well qualified for the job, but knowing more might help. Also it's been over five years since I've applied for a Federal job. Should I still expect to hurry up and wait and not get a letter or phone call either way for at least 2-3 months?

Couple of dumb questions, forgive me, it's been awhile since I've applied to anything on USAJOBS... -The paygrade for the job I'm applying for provides a range for that paygrades steps. If I were hired at that paygrade, would I start at the bottom step or would it depend on my experience, etc? -Is it worth including cover letters when you apply through the site? I feel like when I last applied for jobs, it was dependent on the agency. Not sure if anything has changed there.

So I'm going to start looking at getting a job with the Feds (D.C. based) finally after spending 11 years in the private sector. It's been awhile since I've seriously applied to anything on USA Jobs so I'm gonna reformat my resume as I apply to stuff but I'm still not entirely sure what the best way to do so is. I'm learning now that apparently plastering the announcement number all over your resume and required docs is a thing now so I'm taking that into account. Having said all that, I found this guys template for USA Jobs postings on Reddit (shutup) and it seems like it's cromulent enough for what I need. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_PtqI2rsmWUYVfZHbuZckAwUlSut9SzBWoc4uMkvI0w/edit Any opinions/advice on the above?

Thank you both, I appreciate it! My plan is to start applying over the next few weeks. I'm going out of the country for three weeks next month but something tells me it won't matter because I remember the last time I went through this process it took months for any kind of word to get back to me. I've also got a friend at a sub agency that mentioned they are in need of influx of PM's and they'd look into getting my resume viewed if at all possible, so maybe that'll work out.
